“Devotion to the notion;” that was their work. And the gods would be pleased. But Paul called them to be more than “spiritually aware”.

Pastor’s Pen

The greater St. Cloud community, including our Have you ever watched your children or grandchil- very own neighborhoods and lives are surrounded dren play video games? Those who are too young by a culture increasingly seeking to be “religious”. With all the frightful violence, anger, and fear gento drive can be excellent video-game drivers? Never having taken target practice, they are expert erated in our world, people are seeking hope and speaking of it. But being religious is not the same video-marksmen? Never having flown a plane, they are natural video-pilots? Just don’t put them as Christian. Nor is it saving. Truth mixed with lies is still lies. And how often we are encouraged behind the real wheel Yet! to give-in here or there. Pretend is fun, but real experience is different. A print just isn’t the same as the painting. Watching I’d love to say that Paul won thousands of converts that day by sticking to his guns and showing the football isn’t the same as playing it. Attending a differences. But the truth is the men of Athens class isn’t the same as participating in one. And were not easily swayed. They didn’t want to give being “religious” isn’t the same thing as being up being religious…’just in case.’ “Christian.” The Spirit has given us the real thing - a life, a revived worship, the path for salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. It is more than being religious, it is being a Christian. Being a follower of Christ. It is genuine, it is powerful, it is life altering, and it is life-saving. Not only for you, but for your neighbor too! That together we might sing: I am a C. I am a C-H. I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N. And He is in my H-E-A-R-T and I will L-I-V-E E-T-E-R-N-A -L-L-Y! For Christ is the real deal; and in Him, so are we!

This Easter season we’ve been walking through the book of Acts in Worship. In chapter 17 we hear Paul address a crowd saying: ”Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious” (Acts 17:22). These first-century Grecians were very religious, but they did not have saving faith. Paul understood the difference. Religiosity was something he noticed right away. They had a god for everything; even one statue for an “Unknown God,” just in case they were missing one of the gods. They were full of piety, sincerity, and devotion. They spoke and acted with a religious aire; but these “believers” were always left wondering whether their efforts were enough to merit anything lasting.

Pastor

Paul took a stance with these people and with us. He uses this “Unknown God” statue as a device to bring them the Gospel of Jesus, yet in doing so, he makes sure to confront the difference between being religious and being Christian. The first “sounds” positive. The second is real…and eternal. The one, true, and only God who created all things and sent His Son to redeem all things through suffering, death, and resurrection. Christianity is following this God, the only God, by faith.

There’s still time to sign up for Oberammergau 2020! But spaces are filling up fast. If interested, please pick up a brochure in the Church office or talk to Pastor Hinz!

This was a problem in Athens. Greeks loved the latest craze and followed the coolest gods. 2

DCO CORNER New Church Properties Committee Being Formed In February, members from the Leadership Team, Lay Ministers and the Finance Committee met for planning. They decided to focus on three areas: Faith Formation, Building and Communication and assigned members to each of these three work groups to set goals. The Building work group has met 3 times. They are developing a Church Properties group or committee, 5-7 members, to oversee the overall maintenance and repair of our facility which includes both building and grounds. They have written general objectives for the committee and a more specific “scope of work” for projects here on our campus. They are now in the process of recruiting committee members. If you have interest in serving on the committee and knowledge in building maintenance/repair please contact one of the Building Work Group members: Jon Lentz, Karen Petron-Broda, Delano Schultz or Craig Cooper. This is a great opportunity to serve the Lord by taking care of the building used to bring God’s gifts of Word and Sacraments to our community.

DCO Retiring this Fall I have been considering retirement for about a year and after much thought and prayer I feel it is the best for Trinity and myself. I plan to retire from full-time church work on October 31, 2018. I will be working hard for the next 6 months, with the leadership, to prepare for a smooth transition. The transition time will include taking an inventory of all my responsibilities and with leadership determine what duties to end and what tasks need an alternative plan to continue with either volunteers or future staff. I feel blessed to have served with all of you here at Trinity for the last 18 years. Please pray for me and Jody and we prepare for this new phase in our lives and we will be praying for God’s richest blessings for Trinity as they move forward. – Craig Cooper, DCO Church Contact Information
