The past 33 years, Country’s has had the privilege of hosting the Midnight Express. While all the past years have been about running and having fun, the last 20 or so years have also been about raising much needed awareness and money for the visually impaired in our community.

Thanks Y’all!

For more information, contact: Scott Ressmeyer at (706) 366-4416

Just a few of the ways your participation has positively affected the visually impaired have been through the donation of a ventilator that prevents blindness in premature babies, the purchase of multiple pieces of equipment for several grade schools that include a specialized copy machine, a total graphics solution package, a digital imaging system, and laptop computers equipped with Jaws software. And you’ve helped provide scholarships that allow visually impaired students to continue their education at the college level. You have also been able to support veterans through the Blinded Veterans Association. Some funds from Midnight Express will help provide specialized equipment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Medical Center that helps prevent blindness and ophthalmologic screening instruments to aid in the early detection of retinopathy that sometimes arise as a complication of premature birth.

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS

Country’s Barbecue Helping the Visually Impaired in Our Community

My name is Kevin, I wanted to share my story in hopes it will inspire! I was born premature. The oxygen I needed to survive caused me to lose my sight and medicines also damaged the nerves in my ears causing a moderate hearing loss. That was 26 years ago. My mom spent much of her time driving me to Atlanta to the only center for visually impaired available at that time. Once I entered school I was I was considered disabled. As a child I didn’t understand it; I was enjoying life; biking down hills with my brother, horseback riding, ice skating, roller skating, swimming lessons, Cub scouts and rock climbing. My mom found a very special qualified 20 year vision teacher (Debbie Parkman) by 4th grade and she came and worked with my teachers.

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS

START / FINISH

By middle school accessibility had improved and a teacher’s assistant Ms. Hale was hired while a search for vision teacher continued. She spent hours learning Braille and understood my special needs. She became my foundation for instruction through 12th grade. I became the first blind student in 12th grade to master in computers in Georgia 4-H. I was the first Blind Braille reader to graduate from high school in my county. With continued support I have earned my Associates degree in Computer Support and have finished most of my core classes towards my Bachelor’s Degree.

I am a player with Midnight stars Beep Ball team. I love supporting programs like Midnight Express Run in Columbus. A chance to play Beep baseball not only is fun but educates the public. Support with access to knowledge and the will to push through is all I needed. It just took different tools to get there. My biggest hope is that the visually impaired are not judged by their disability but rather on their skills and knowledge and to be able to have a chance to learn. I have been blessed and am always ready to venture out. I hope you are too?
