Thought for the Week... No event in your life can imprison you. This is what resurrection is about. I shall not allow the events of my life to make me their prisoner.... I shall continually believe that God is not through with my life, or with me. ~Howard Thurman

Thinking Out Loud... I’m just not myself, today.” At some point, we’ve probably all said this, and we’ve heard others say it about themselves. What is meant by that? What we mean is that we aren’t at our best on that particular day. But the truth of the matter is that even when we aren’t at our best, we are our self that day. We have good days and bad days and everything in between, and no matter how we are on any day, we are who we are. We all are a mixture of positive traits and negative traits. I do believe that most people lean toward the positive traits most of the time, but the negative can creep into our lives. If we can learn to accept each other in our totality, it would make our lives much happier. Part of the problem is that we often have unspoken expectations of each other, and when someone doesn’t meet these expectations, we are hurt. We often assume that others know what we want from them, when they have absolutely no idea that we have these feelings. Plus, our expectations of others are often unreasonable, and their expectations of us are, also. I’ve heard it said that expectations are recipes for disappointments. A key is to communicate with each other what our expectations are. Another a key can be to sometimes lower our expectations. Also, a key is to be at peace with ourselves. If we are happy inside our own skin, we won’t feel others should give us the kind of happiness that we can only give ourselves. How do we find happiness with ourselves? We find it by being embraced by the truth that God loves us. If that truth penetrates us, it will set us free to be happy and free. At the conclusion of worship, I sometimes use these Words of Blessing and Commissioning that I found in a worship guide: Go from here with open arms, with heads held high, and with love in your heart. Each one of you is beautiful and loved by God. No matter what happens, always remember that. Always believe in yourself, because God believes in you. Go out and follow your dreams, and if your dreams go up in smoke, build new dreams and follow them. Grab hold of your future and make a difference in the world as Christ continues to make a difference in your life. Be everything you can be. Be at peace with others and with God, and be happy. Amen. Enjoy the ride, Scott

What a great weekend at the Spring Youth Assembly with mission projects, games, worship and small group times! Big thanks to Bob and Lisa Oeth who joined Randy as sponsors for the weekend. Thanks as well to our host site, Downey Avenue Christian Church, to Lee Yates and the IYC for their planning and leadership, and specially to Samantha Oeth for her service on IYC, leadership through the weekend and bringing the message in worship Saturday night.

Searching for the right answer for our organ... Do you remember singing the Hallelujah Chorus last month at the Easter service accompanied by the piano? It sounded as if we planned it, right? Actually, we didn’t. The move to the piano was a last-minute decision because our pipe organ was not functioning well enough that morning to handle it. For the last few years – at budget time and whenever we’re making strategic plans for the church’s future – I have reminded our staff and board that our organ is failing and that we’ll have to address it someday. About half of the functions aren’t working at all. The stops won’t stay the way they were set. The pauses you sometimes hear during services before music starts? That’s because Nikolai has to readjust what he pre-set earlier. We can no longer use the organ and hand bells together, because the organ is so badly out of tune. I give great credit to Nikolai (and Joseph before him) for being patient and creative -- and playing so well that the average person doesn’t realize the organ is failing. We worry that any day could be the day the organ breathes its last. Where would that leave us for an Easter service? Or Christmas Eve? Or a wedding? We formed a committee earlier this year to study the full spectrum of options from repair to replacement – and to gather the costs associated with each option. The committee is still doing research and will present its recommendations to the church administrative committee and trustees as soon as next month.
