Joined Together for the Glory of God and for the Benefit of Others You are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In Him you are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (Eph 2:19b-22). 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6a Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them (Romans 12:46a). These passages express an important theme that is running, not just through Paul’s letters, but through the entire Bible. They express a unique reality about our lives now that we have Christ in it. Sometimes in our attempts to summarize the gospel of Jesus, we have ended up ‘reducing’ the gospel (‘good news’) of Jesus. I’ve recently heard the good news of Jesus expressed so well in a Christianity Today article that I can’t help but share a brief quote from it: “The message of the gospel is that Christ saves us from something (sin and eternal consequences), for something (a new life of flourishing, both now & for eternity), and to something (a new community called the church).” Sometimes we emphasize one of these components to the exclusion or diminishing of the others. Our Christian faith isn’t simply about forgiveness, nor is it simply about doing non-descript ‘good’ to others, nor is it simply about going to church. The three go together: mission, service, and worship. The church is a community with a purpose and a mission. We are held together across cultural and socio-economic lines by the grace that each of us has received. We are joined together across the globe in a common worship of the Lord Jesus. We are also connected in making a difference in our communities and world with so many fellow Christians across our city, our country, and our world. We are built together as a household and joined together as a body. The precious truth of these verses and this foundational good news was pressed in on me recently on my trip to El Salvador with our mission team that goes every January and July to serve in area schools. In my time here at Calvary I had heard much about what the trips were about, but this time I had the chance to see how each piece fit together. Not only did we have different teams and areas for people to serve using their unique gifts and skills (see Romans 12:4ff), but the trip was centered around those three cores of mission, service, and worship/study with Christians in El Salvador (see Ephesians 2:19ff). It was a beautiful testimony of the fullness of the good news of Jesus Christ. Each day we had the chance to remember that as Christians we are 1) forgiven sinners, 2) gifted servants, and 3) connected members of a community, for we have been saved from something, for something and to something. May God bless you as you grow each day in that Good News of Jesus Christ and as you continue to grow and mature in your walk with Jesus.

Treasurer What motivates you to give of your time and talent in this way? Knowing I have a talent and unique ability that can help our congregation resulting in us being able to grow our ministry. What is your favorite thing about serving at Calvary? Developing relationships with other members and working together as a cohesive team and accomplishing great things. Favorite Book/Verse of the Bible? 1 Corinthians Favorite Dessert? My sister-in-law’s chocolate chip cookies What is one thing that the people of Calvary can keep in their prayers for your area of ministry? That we continue to work to be good stewards of God’s gifts to us.
I teach the Preschool 4-5’s classes and I am the Early Childhood Director. I am also Art Department Head for the school. What is your favorite thing about serving at Calvary? Meeting new families and spreading the message of our Savior to the children. Their innocence and faith astounds me each year as together we learn more about Jesus! Who has been the biggest influence on your faith? Why? My father. During his lifetime, he set a Christ-like example as a father, husband, self-employed carpenter/contractor, and congregational member. I could ask him a question and expect a thought out answer that would cause me to grow in my faith and love toward God. Favorite Book/Verse of the Bible? Romans 8:28—”And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose”. Favorite Dessert? My mom’s silver white chocolate chip birthday cake! What is the one thing that the people of Calvary can keep in their prayers for your area of ministry? That I am able to productively communicate to the families and assist their children in all areas of learning and growing, as well as meet their spiritual needs as growing Christians.

Attention 7th Grade Youth – Enroll Now for our Head-to-Heart Confirmation Ministry If your child has not been previously enrolled in our Head-to-Heart confirmation ministry, we invite you to contact the church office for more information. It is a great chance for your child to grow in their relationship with the Lord and others, as each youth prepares to affirm his/her faith in Jesus and begin to receive the Lord’s Supper. A special retreat will take place at Camp Lakeview September 13-14 and meetings will begin on September 22 (

Lutheran Child and Family Services Relative Care Needs Imagine what it’s like for a child or teen to be removed from their home due to difficult or abusive situations. Such is the case for many children whom the Lutheran Child and Family Services helps. The goal is to keep the children with other family members. Often these moves come hastily with the children grabbing only a few quick items. LCFS works to ease the transition by providing the child with a bag of supplies to bring to a relative’s home during their temporary relocation. The following items are most needed at this time:
Toothbrushes, Toothpaste Shampoo/conditioner Combs or brushes Deodorant Crayons and coloring books

Linda passed away on May 29, 2019. Linda was known by many at Calvary as she previously served as a secretary.

Youth Ministry FLIGHT—High School Youth Group FLIGHT meets Sunday evenings from 5:30-7:00 pm in the youth room. Events typically include food, Bible study, small group discussion, and an activity. This group is open to all students currently in grades 9-12. Join us September 8th for our small groups kick-off! Contact Sam Troemel to sign-up to be a part of a high school small group. LAUNCH (5th & 6th) LAUNCH will meet this month on Wednesday, September 18th from 5:30-7:00 pm for our pancake party! This event will include a Bible study and an activity. SAIL (7th & 8th) SAIL will meet this month on Wednesday, September 25th from 5:30-7:00 pm for our pizza party and video game tournament. Which game or system will be used? Come and find out! All 7th and 8th grade students are invited to the junior high youth rally at Camp Lakeview. This will take place on October 11th and 12th. Registration papers can be found in the church office and are due by September 21st with a $50 payment.
Outreach Ministry Help Grow Calvary’s Community Garden Order your mums and asters by Labor Day (September 2nd). Mums are 9 inch plants in various colors. Order forms are available in member boxes, at narthex table or in the church office. You can also email your order to Pr.Art at
[email protected]. Plants are $10.00 each and proceeds will help to expand our Community Raised Bed Garden. Plants will be available for pick up at the Calvary Church Picnic at German Park on September 15 th. School families can pick up plants after school on Friday, Sept. 13th. CLEARLY SEEING Our biblical text for our school theme for this year is from 1 Corinthians 13:12: “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 20/20 is a measure of perfect eyesight. 20/20 vision permits clearly seeing without the aid of corrective lenses. This school year we will encounter 2020. God grants to us His Spirit enabling us to clearly see our need for the redemptive power found in Christ as He suffered and died on Calvary’s cross. We live as His redeemed people showing His love and grace to others. This is the foundation that we build upon at Calvary Lutheran Church and School. We are constantly exposed to the teachings of mankind where truths are individually determined. These truths are beyond mere opinions. Truths dictate our understanding of the world in which we live. When these truths are challenged we are ready to defend them by clearly seeing. God has given to us the only truth. This truth is found in His Word. It is vitally important that we study His Word equipping us to CLEARLY SEE through the power of the Holy Spirit when these truths are challenged. Through the blood of Jesus we are redeemed. We thank God for the opportunity to teach God’s truth to the children. This is God’s calling of parents, teachers, and pastors. This is our charge as a community of believers. We lift one another in prayer. We grow and mature in Christian love and service through the power of the Holy Spirit as we gather for worship, hear His Word, partake in the sacraments, and pray. We thank God for the opportunity and privilege to share in this daily walk at Calvary Lutheran Church and School. We ask the Lord to bless all with His love as we walk each day together in the shadow of the cross CLEARLY SEEING. Many tasks and projects were accomplished over the summer months in preparation for the start of school. Classroom carpets were cleaned. Tiled floors stripped and waxed. Our Preschool 4-5 year old and second grade classrooms received a complete update with new flooring, LED lighting, and a fresh coat of paint. Our PTL installed a new GaGa Pit on the older students’ playground. Many mechanical needs were also repaired. All the entrances were power washed. This highlights the major projects. Many more items were accomplished as well. We thank all involved for their giving and assistance throughout this summer through our Service Hour Program. We especially thank our Facilities Ministry Team for their effort and hours given for us to enjoy the facilities. Delayed Start School will begin at 8:30 AM each Wednesday that school is in session. The students will be released to their classrooms beginning at 8:15 AM. This delayed start has been scheduled to permit additional professional growth opportunities for our faculty and staff. School Chapel Services Moved to Thursdays School chapel services will be held on THURSDAYS this school year. The starting times for chapel will remain at 8:10 AM for all school worship times. SMILE SMILE SMILE The students of Calvary Lutheran School will have their school photographs taken on TuesdayWednesday, October 1-2. The majority of our students will have their picture taken on Tuesday. Tuesday will be a non-uniform day allowing the students greater choices for their photographs. Any absentees from Tuesday will have their pictures taken on Wednesday. Windy City Players Our first all school assembly is scheduled for Friday, September 6 th. performing “Beauty and the Beast.” Our assembly begins at 8:40AM.

Labor Day Calvary Lutheran School will be closed on Monday, September 2nd in observance of Labor Day. We thank God for the gift of work. We strive to use His gifts to our very best potential as His created beings. Outdoor Education Our Sixth Grade class will be experiencing Outdoor Education on Wednesday-Friday, September 4-6. The class will travel to the wilds of Camp Lakeview. Mrs. Faubion and Mrs. Troemel will lead this expedition. For further information please contact Mrs. Faubion or Mrs. Troemel. We ask the Lord to go with our 6 th graders and all our adult chaperones granting them safety in their travels. We ask the Lord to grant to them His Spirit as they grow together through this experience. 1st Quarter Mid Term Our first quarter mid term is Friday, September 6. Students in second through eighth grade will receive their midterm reports on Wednesday, September 11 via Renweb. We ask that our parents review these reports with their children. We strive to provide many evaluations throughout the school year. Grandparents or Special Person Day – September 27 SAVE the DATE –We invite all Grandparents or Special Persons of Kindergarten through 8th graders to Calvary Lutheran Church and School on Friday, September 27. The fun will begin at 12:30PM. Service Hour Program We thank so many of our parents and families who have already completed numerous tasks providing for the needs of our church and school. NEWS FROM LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL OF INDIANAPOLIS 7th Annual SugarPlum Holiday Fair – Saturday, October 26 Do you have a hand-made craft or other product you would like to sell? Reserve a booth today for the SugarPlum Holiday Fair, Saturday, October 26 at Lutheran High School. A 10' X 10' booth space in the gym is $40; 5' X 10' booth space in the hallway is $35. A limited number of booths have electrical access for an additional $5 fee. Vendors love that LHS fine arts students help them load in and load out their booths. Women in Mission Extravagant Sharing The soup and soup mixes you brought in August and the canned fruits and veggies (a little over 200 pounds) from July provided for many at the Sharing Place of Lutheran Child and Family Services. Thanks to each of you! Throughout September, Calvary will continue supporting the needs of many through the Sharing Place by bringing boxes or individual size macaroni and cheese. Place them on the shelves across from the center sanctuary doors. Cheerfully bless others as you have been abundantly blessed by Jesus.
Blankets for Babies Our September dates are Thurs., Sept 12 and 26. (6:00-8:00 p.m. in the cafe area.) We have lots of pretty, new yarn just aching to be made into baby blankets! Fall is a perfect time to learn how to knit or crochet. We recently donated 19 blankets to the Life Center. Parish Education Saturday Night Bible Class Saturday Night Bible Class will resume on September 7 and continue through November 23. We will open with a study of Prophets and Prophecy in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Facilities Facilities needs your help in setting up the sound system for the picnic September 15th. Facilities needs leaders to help organize a group of students from University of Indianapolis from 9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m., Saturday, September 21st. We will be mulching and painting CLCS logos on our new chairs. We need extra shovels, rakes, pitchforks and wheelbarrows. Facilities also will be needing trucks or trailers to move all our metal to recycle to Lutheran High School on October 5th 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Financial Peace University class to start Sunday, September 8 Planning for the future is hard when you’re still paying for the past! There’s a better way! Calvary’s Stewardship Ministry Team is excited to announce Financial Peace University classes will be held Sunday morning during the family education hour (9:15 to 10:30 a.m.). Calvary members Gene Jend joins Josh and Rene Finke along with Chris and Kara Hiatt ;as the leadership team for the nine-weeks of classes. Renee Finke shares, “By following the financial principles that Dave Ramsey teaches, we were able to pay down our consumer debt by 30k in just 8 months! His budgeting advice is practical and easy to apply. While attending FPU, we learned how to be on the same page with saving and spending. Applying these principles to our lives has strengthened our faith, marriage, and family.” Cost for the class is $100 which includes all material plus one-year of Financial Peace Membership an online resource with access to EveryDollar Plus budgeting app, Ask a Coach Q&A, bonus courses and more digital tools. Thank you received from LCMS Ministry to Armed Forces Calvary is financially supporting this ministry which recently hosted an East Coast Training Seminar for LCMS military chaplains and their wives to come together for worship, fellowship and continuing education. Many chaplains are deployed in combat situations to bring the Gospel to service members and their families. Thank you received from the Nebraska District of LCMS Recently Calvary sent funds to LCMS Disaster Relief to assist flooding in Nebraska. A note from the district treasurer noted that relief fund grants assisted congregations in Cairo, Osmond, Verdigre, Columbus, Fremont, Stanton, and St. Edward so they can assist families. Camp Restore, established by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont, hosted relief teams going out into the community. St. Johns Lutheran Church and School in Battle Creek opened their doors to the community needing a place to stay even while flood waters would eventually damage their building as well. Luterano Indy Mission Update The Luterano Indy Mission is worshipping at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church and School in Avon every Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. and Trinity Lutheran Church. Families from Honduras, Guatemala, Peru and other countries hear God’s Word in Spanish. Exciting developments at Trinity include an active LWML group of Latino ladies. Calvary as a congregation supports this local mission through budgeted funds but members with a heart for this work can contribute through contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church, 8540 E. 16th St, Indianapolis, IN 46217 noting Luterano Indy.

Scholarship Tax Credit Information “Too Good To Be True?!” God has provided a unique opportunity to help fund the Christian education of our Calvary students. The Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization of Indiana, Inc. has been identified as a Scholarship Granting Organization. Updates from the 2018-19 School Year: • 26 families/individuals contributed $58,000.00 towards this Scholarship Tax Credit • This funded the need for 24 Scholarship grants. • Many grant recipients are now enjoying the benefit of a CHOICE State voucher. • All Calvary Lutheran Church and School aid from the General Fund has been eliminated. New Information • Over $425,000.00 has been gathered through the state tax credit initiative over the past 8 years. • The donor base has been virtually unchanged over these years. • Donors are increasing their gifts. Why? The “Too Good to be True” aspects • We are asking for previous year participants in this program to communicate all the benefits inviting two-three others to prayerfully consider involvement increasing our donor base. • Personal tax credits that remain against your tax liability may be used for up to 9 years. • All can now be accomplished online. www.lutheranSGO.org • Be sure to identify Calvary Lutheran School, Indianapolis as the recipient of your donation. How may I help? Donations are currently being accepted. We are in need of $62,500.00 to fully fund this year’s grants. Multiple Benefits for Calvary Lutheran School students, the private or corporate donor, and Calvary Lutheran Church 1. Students and their families accepted in this program will receive a scholarship grant per child enrolled in Kindergarten -8th grade at Calvary. 2. 2. The donor will receive a 50% Indiana State tax credit for every dollar donated. Example: A donation of $1000.00 will result in a tax credit of $500.00 towards your Indiana income tax liability. Private as well as corporate donations will receive this benefit. 3. A student receiving a Scholarship grant in Kindergarten will then be eligible for a CHOICE State voucher through 12th grade. This could result in a total of over $75,000.00 towards Christian Education. Where Do I sign up? Donor forms are available in the church and school offices or at www.lutheranSGO.org. How Do I Proceed? Return the completed donor form with your donation to the Church or School Office or send it directly to the Lutheran SGO. All donor forms received will be sent in one cover to Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization. They will issue your tax credit statement. Be sure to identify CALVARY LUTHERAN SCHOOL as the recipient of your donation. Checks are to be payable to: The Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization of Indiana, Inc. What happens in the future? Children receiving a scholarship grant are eligible the following school year to convert this grant to a CHOICE State voucher. This again has eliminated the need for congregational funded scholarship dollars. Children will have the opportunity to hear God’s Word through your giving.
