Legislative Breakfast on Oct. 26 The Franklin County chambers of commerce will co-host a legislative breakfast featuring our elected state officials discussing important issues affecting the business climate in south central Pennsylvania. The breakfast will be held on Thursday, October 26 from 7 to 9 a.m. at The Orchards. Participating legislators include: Senator Richard Alloway, II, Senator John Eichelberger, Representative Adam Harris, Representative Rob Kauffman, Representative Paul Schemel and Representative Jesse Topper. Chamber seeks Business Person of the Year The Chamber is actively seeking nominations for the 2017 Business Person of the Year. Plan ahead for the holidays and benefit Fall is here and summer vacation is over. I just got my kids back to school and started to settle in for the football season, then I walk into a store and – BAM! – I’m hit with Christmas decorations. It’s not even Halloween yet and we’re already seeing displays and promotions for the holiday season. Ready or not, Christmas and New Year’s will be here before we know it, and it’s time to start thinking about the holidays. Before you start your holiday planning in earnest, I encourage you to take some time to think about how you can support other Chamber members in the process or perhaps how your business might benefit from Chamber programs during the season. The Chamber Card, sponsored by Penn National Insurance, offers an excellent opportunity for you to receive exactly the services and products you need from other Chamber members and to receive a discount. More than 500 Chamber members participate in the buy local program and the Chamber continues to work to expand participation. Just a quick glance down the member offers listed on our website should give you plenty of ideas about where you can obtain what you need right here in the community. If you are entertaining at home or planning the office holiday party, Chamber Card participants offer discounts on everything from catering to flowers. If you need to get your home in tip-top shape before guests arrive, you can find discounts on cleaning and decorating services. If you will be traveling, be sure to check out discounts on vehicle maintenance and tires before you go. And there are, of course, plenty of retailers that offer spectacular Chamber Card deals so you can find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. Another buy local initiative promoting members is the Chamber Dollars program. If you struggle every year to figure out what to give your employees, your child’s teacher or other people that you want to recognize, Chamber Dollars are a wonderful gift idea. Chamber Dollars work like gift certificates that can be used at any of the 60 participating local businesses. The recipients of Chamber Dollars have the flexibility to spend them as they wish in a wide range of businesses, all while supporting fellow Chamber members. If your business plans to offer holiday specials or to host a holiday event that is open to the public, the Chamber events calendar, newsletter or e-blast is the perfect place to promote your plans. You also may find discounts on advertising and promotional materials through a Chamber Card participant. Finally, don’t forget to look at ways that your business could benefit from participating in the Chamber Card program, the Chamber Dollars program, advertising on the Chamber website or making use of other services offered by the Chamber. Doug Harmon began a new job at the Franklin County Visitors Bureau in September. Doug joined the Chamber staff as membership director in 2006. During his tenure, he spearheaded a number of projects - always with the best interests of businesses in mind - to provide more services and benefits to members. He launched a referral networking Doug & his wife, Shannon, at Sip & Savor group, expanded the Chamber Ambassadors program, coordinated business expos, led a successful membership drive in 2012, planned more than 130 mixers and much more. The Chamber is pleased to welcome Laiton Suders to the team as administrative assistant/customer service representative. Laiton graduated in May 2017 from Geneva College with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in business. She played Varsity Soccer for Geneva and was involved in student government. She interned with the Chamber during the Laiton Suders summer of 2016 assisting with events and communications projects. A Chambersburg native, Laiton is an alumna of Cumberland Valley Christian School. In her spare time she likes reading and traveling, she’s a huge Pittsburgh Penguin fan and her lucky number is nine.

First Responders Appreciation Day On Friday, December 8, the 11/30 Network will give back to perhaps the most deserving citizens in the county - first responders. Volunteers will deliver care packages to the county’s fire, police and EMS departments to thank them for their service during the 3rd Annual Franklin County First Responders Appreciation Day. The Network is currently seeking donations for first responders. If you or your business, organization or community group is interested in donating food platters (i.e. donuts, bagels, cookies, subs, etc.), gift cards or monetary funds to purchase care package items, please contact Amy Weibley at 717-264-7101 ext. 204 or aweibley@ chambersburg.org. Twenty begin LFC journey Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Community began the 2017-2018 class with the weekend retreat at Mill Road Adventures (formerly Manito, Inc.) in September. The 20 members of the class started with a Friday evening of icebreaker and LFC students teambuild during an activity team building activities led by Randy Wilson of REEL PD and Mark Keck of Mill Road Adventures. On Saturday morning, the students were split into teams and listened to community service project proposals from 11 nonprofit organizations. With tips from Michelle D’Antonio of Montessori Academy of Chambersburg, each team selected their service project for the year. The project teams are provided mentors who were introduced by Laura Stover of Smith Elliott Kearns & Company. Mentors Bill Coy of Orrstown Bank, Jason Crider of Orrstown Bank, Penny Koser of F&M Trust, Heather McEndree of the Cumberland Valley School of Music, Angela Quigley of Smith Elliott Kearns & Company and Amy Weibley of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce provide assistance to each team as they navigate through their project over the next nine months. The project teams will be working with Shalom Christian Academy on a program to promote reading skills, the Boys & Girls Club of Chambersburg & Shippensburg on the Paint the Town Blue awareness week, the LFC Alumni Committee building a website for the organization, the Antietam Humane Society assessing and providing recommendations for prices and policies for their new Adoption Center and the Drew Michael Taylor Foundation to expand awareness of the organization’s services. The weekend concluded with more team building exercises and a chance to climb the Manito tower. LFC Youth hit the ground running Leadership Franklin County Youth (LFCY) have had a busy back to school season with two sessions already completed. On August 29, the students met at Mill Road Adventures, formerly Manito Inc., LFCY students work together for teambuilding to participate in team building exercises with Mark Keck, president and CEO. They also heard from Jay Eurie of South Central Community Action Programs about potential community service projects they can complete as part of the LFCY program. On September 12, the students reconvened at Wilson College for a session led by Maria Banks of the Chambersburg Area School District beginning with an overview of leadership principles to be explored during the upcoming sessions. Banks introduced the five leadership practices outlined in their textbooks by James Kouzes and Barry Posner: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act and Encourage the Heart. Following the introduction of leadership principles, Banks led the students through diversity exercises designed to help the students better understand themselves and other people. They discussed the similarities and differences they have with others. Activities such as the privilege walk helped students explore the impact on their lives of factors they can’t control. The students talked about how they can use this knowledge to demonstrate leadership. LFCY students are able to participate in the program for free thanks to the generous sponsorship of Wilson College.

AppleFest to hit Main Street AppleFest will be held on the main streets of downtown Chambersburg on Saturday, October 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The popular street festival, organized by the Downtown Business Council (DBC), is held on the third Saturday of October each year and celebrates one of the region’s best crops - think apple pie, apple butter and apple dumplings. The free event features food and craft vendors, two live music stages, a kids’ activity area including a bounce house, the North Square Farmers Market and much more for all ages. Trick or Treat on Main Bring your little ghouls, goblins and princesses downtown for trickor-treating at your favorite local businesses during the annual Trick or Treat on Main event. On Saturday, October 28 from noon to 2 p.m. participating businesses will hand out candy to children in costumes that are accompanied by an adult.

Spread that holiday cheer by entering a float in the downtown Chambersburg Christmas Parade. This year’s parade will be Saturday, November 18 at 5:30 p.m. The annual Christmas parade, organized by the Downtown Business Council and sponsored by F&M Trust, is Santa’s first visit to Chambersburg for the season! Businesses and organizations are invited to enter a float in the parade. Entries must follow parade guidelines and rules, which can be found online at www.discoverchambersburg.com. Small Business Saturday on Nov. 25 When you think of Thanksgiving, what comes to mind? On Saturday, November 25, you’ll find great gift items and enjoy delicious meals at locally-owned businesses. Downtown Chambersburg Inc. will coordinate specials and celebrating our local businesses for Small Business Saturday, sponsored by the Downtown Business Council. Change of Commands at Letterkenny Johnnie’s and ULTA recognized Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD) and Letterkenny Munitions Center (LEMC) honored outgoing commanders and welcomed the incoming commanders during Change of Command ceremonies this summer. LEMC welcomed a new commanding Col. Ledbetter receives LEAD officer Lt. Col. Jeffrey J. Ignatowski colors at the Change of Command during a ceremony in June. Lt. Col. Trenton J. Conner relinquished command of LEMC after two years. During Conner’s command, LEMC completed construction of the $38 million Ammonium Perchlorate Rocket Motor Disposal facility. This new, one-of-a-kind facility supports demilitarization of AP Based Composite Rocket Motors and the chamber facilitates an environmentally friendly means to dispose of AP based rocket motors. In March 2016 LEMC was designated the Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Army Tactical Missile System, Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System and Low Cost Reduced Range Practice Rockets by the Secretary of the Army. For his next assignment, Conner was selected to attend the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks. Prior to his new assignment, Ignatowski spent two years in the 528th Sustainment Brigade (Special Operations) (Airborne), 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) as the command’s Support Operation Officer, supporting operations in the Middle East and Africa. Ignatowski is a native of Franklin, Wis. He was commissioned through Reserve Officer Training Corps upon graduation from Marquette University with a Bachelor of Science in Quality and Performance Engineering Management in May 2000. Col. Stephen Ledbetter succeeded Col. Deacon Maddox as commander of LEAD in an outdoor ceremony in August. Under Maddox’s leadership for the past two years, LEAD began construction of a Military Construction Army project for a 45,040 sq. ft, $15 million addition to Building 350 that will house metal treatment and surface preparations, was recognized with its 10th Shingo Medallion for manufacturing excellence, and made vast improvements in the industrial facilities, safety trends and environmental practices. The depot, which is the second-largest employer in Franklin County, services air defense and anti-tank missile systems, along with a variety of specialized military vehicles, generators and modular systems for housing and support of troops in combat zones. Ledbetter, a native of Hendersonville, Tenn., received his commission into the Army Transportation Corps through the University of Tennessee in December 1993 where he received a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. “Letterkenny Army Depot has deep roots in the Cumberland Valley and has a proud history of building first-class combat power for the Army,” Ledbetter said at the ceremony. “I am extremely humbled and honored to be joining the men and women on the Letterkenny team as we continue to build readiness for the Army and our joint partners.” The Chamber welcomes both incoming commanders to the area and looks forward to working closley with them to continue a strong presence of Letterkenny in the community.

Franklin County Area Development Corporation (FCADC) held its 31st Annual Industry Appreciation Dinner on September 7 at Green Grove Gardens. The event celebrated businesses in Franklin County while honoring employers who make this area a great place to live, work and raise a family. More than 400 people were in attendance. The evening included a presenation of awards by FCADC. Johnnie’s Restaurant & Hotel Service, Inc. and ULTA Beauty distribution center were both honored at the event. With 40 employees and multiple locations, familyowned Johnnie’s Inc. was named Small Business of the Year. The average tenure of its employees is 24 years. The ULTA Beauty distribution center in Chambersburg was awarded the 2017 Large Business of the Year. Six hundred employees there support ULTA’s 1,000 retail stores, each of which sells cosmetics, hair-care products and fragrances. The distribution center ships 100 million units per year to retail stores. Bill Boltz, the distribution center’s director, recognized the center’s team members for their charitable giving and service to the community. James “Jim” Junkin was also honored at the breakfast, receiving the Zane A. Miller Award which recognizes lifetime contributions in business, civic commitment and volunteerism. Junkin has been active in family farming since 1997. The nomination recognized his cropand livestock-management techniques, as well as his advocacy for continuing education.

Wilson College will join the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) in 2018-19, a move that will enhance the student-athlete experience by aligning Wilson with other small, private colleges and providing more balanced competition. Protection4Paws is hosting a Golf Tournament at Caledonia Golf Club on Friday, October 6. The 501(c)3 organization is dedicated to raising money to supply Police K9s with the items needed to protect them while they protect us. The tournament will be a two person scramble with each player only using three clubs. The cost is $70 per player. The event is sponsored by Senator Rich Alloway. Summit Health this month will offer a drive-through flu-shot clinic on Saturday, October 14 at 12 St. Paul Dr. Adults and children ages 6 months and older will be able to ride into the parking lot to get a flu shot. Flu season typically starts in October and lasts through March, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most insurance plans cover the cost of the flu shot. GIVING BACK Noelker and Hull Associates, Inc. recently teamed with the Franklin County Library System’s Grove Family Library to present its summer reading program. Chambersburg native, Brian L. Kuhns, senior associate and senior project architect with the firm, shared his career experience with the program’s young participants, ranging in age from six to eight. This year’s theme, Building a Better World, challenges children to picture a building design in their minds then build their vision with blocks. The 11/30 Network young professionals group hosted a Community Mini-Golf Tournament in August with more than 50 people in attendance to raise money for local nonprofit, Over the Rainbow Children’s Advocacy Center. Proceeds from the event totaled $423, all of which was donated to the organization. Over the Rainbow provides a safe, child-friendly place for children and their families to receive services that help to restore hope and provide healing from child abuse. The Franklin County Library System is leading a $5.5 million renovation and expansion of the historic Coyle Free Library located in the heart of downtown Chambersburg. A $15,000 gift from Wilson College will help push Chambersburg’s Coyle Free Library toward its $2.5 million community fundraising goal. The gift from Wilson will be used to fund renovations to space in the 1911 Coyle building that will house the office of Franklin County Library System Executive Director Bernice Crouse. The renovation project will restore the exterior and other historic parts of the original building, as well as construct an addition to create new, flexible space to support the facility’s future needs.
