FOXEN Newsletter

Dear Members,

December 2015

Happy Holidays! Our 31st harvest is well behind us and now we turn our attentions to the excitement of the holiday season with our families and friends. As I noted in my October letter, this year’s harvest yields were down an average of 40%. This will result in a big drop in production for our 2015 vintage wines, but we couldn’t be happier with the quality of fruit harvest and the subsequent young wines now resting in our barrel room. Jenny and I will finish up our busy 2015 travel schedule with two events this month on opposite ends of the country: a winemaker dinner on December 12 on the Big Island of Hawaii at the Hapuna Prince Hotel; and a dinner at the hot Uvaggio on New Year’s Eve in Coral Gables, Florida. Our 2016 travel calendar is filling up and we are always adding new events for Jenny, me and our newest road-warrior, daughter Kaitlin. So I encourage you to check out our social media sites: our website (www.foxenvineyard.com/experience-foxen/events), Foxen Facebook page (www.facebook.com/foxenwinery), and Twitter. In other news, I want to let you know that our club manager, John Tevis, is no longer with us. John has moved on and we wish him the best. In the meantime our FOXEN Wine Club and Tasting Room Team of Katie, Mo, Simone and Holly are ready for the holiday rush and eager to serve your mail order and shipping needs. And so…this is a great time to stock up for the holidays and for your wine-loving friends and family. To help this year, we are offering special gift packages (check out our “Holiday Packages” on our website “Store”) and for the first time our “Twelve Days of Christmas Specials” beginning December 1. More information to follow. Just give us your list and we can take care of the rest! Visit our website or call the winery at 805-937-4251 for more information. In order for your packages to arrive before Christmas, please note that our shipping deadline is December 16th for out-of-state and December 18th for California deliveries. Please know that we truly appreciate your enthusiastic loyalty and support throughout the year. And from our entire FOXEN family, we wish you all a very happy, healthy and peaceful holiday season. Cheers! Richard Doré

Billy’s Winemaker Notes

2013 Cuvée Jeanne Marie, Williamson-Dore Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley: The second of three generous vintages, 2013

was a gorgeous harvest of perfect Grenache and Mourvèdre off the Williamson-Doré Vineyard. We picked Grenache on October 5and Mourvèdre 10 days later. These were normal picking dates for these varietals in the Santa Ynez Valley; especially when compared to our drought affected harvests of 2014 (Sept 10 and 17th) and 2015 (Aug. 25 and Sept. 1). The 2013 grapes were fermented and aged separately and spent 18 months in French and Hungarian 500-liter puncheons. We put this blend together just prior to bottling in June 2015. This version of CJM is 76% Grenache and 24% Mourvèdre. It displays a beautiful garnet color, with notes of kirsch, pomegranate and pepper from the Grenache, and crushed flowers and watermelon rind from the Mourvèdre. This is a wine that is drinking very well from the get go, but will continue to develop over the next 10 years. I found it to be a perfect match with grilled mango and jalapeno chicken sausage. Drinking window: now – 2022. 91-93 points VinoUS • 89-91 Wine Advocate (score range due to submitting barrel samples) • Production: 490 cases • Retail: $40

2013 Syrah, Toasted Rope, Santa Ynez Valley: From the esteemed Vogelzang Vineyard, this wine is

a blend of co-fermented Syrah (82%) and Viognier (18%). The fruit was picked and processed on the same day (Sept. 27) and fermented for 20 days, with manual punch-downs twice daily. The actual look of the fermenting grapes reminded me of the “salt and pepper” pants we wore in Catholic grammar school. This wine then aged in Hungarian oak 500-liter puncheons, 25% of which were new. I am always amazed at how the Viognier addition to the Syrah elevates the aromatics of the wine—in this case of freshly opened gardenias, followed up by perfectly ripe and juicy pluots. Berry and fig flavors carry on the palate in a fine line that is neither unctuous nor overwhelming. I opened up this wine to match with a Black Forest ham and Gruyère panino that had some roasted pimentos and fresh cucumber. It was a perfect luncheon pairing! Drinking window: now – 2020. 90-92 points Wine Advocate (score range due to submitting barrel samples • Production: 413 cases • Retail: $44

2012 Volpino, Santa Ynez Valley: This is another solid vintage of our Volpino or “little fox” blend. The 2012 vintage fits our “Cal-Ital” model: 78% Sangiovese from the Faith Vineyard and 22% Merlot from the Vogelzang Vineyard. The grapes fermented and aged separately before the blend was assembled after 14 months in barrel. The blended wine was bottled without fining or filtering after an additional six months in barrel. We want the true fruit to stand out with this wine, so no new barrels (once and twice-filled French oak) were were used for the Volpino aging program. As always, the wine displays nice aromatics and flavors of rose petal, strawberry, well-worn glove leather and hints of sage incense. It matches up well with all things Italian and will age gracefully for 10-12 years. I always go to lamb Bolognese with roasted garlic cloves on fresh pasta -- but pizza or meatball sandwiches also work. Drinking window: now - 2026 Production: 260 cases • Retail: $32 FOXEN Vineyard & Winery • 7600 Foxen Canyon Rd • Santa Maria, CA • 93454 • Tel. 805.937.4251 • foxenvineyard.com
