May 2019

Dear Members, What a spectacular spring it has been! The abundance of winter rain that lasted well into March created Foxen Canyon’s own “super bloom” that arrived with an explosion of color. I can’t remember the last time we’ve seen such a display of spring wildflowers! The rain also leeched our vineyards soils of built-up salts and delayed bud-break, giving us an outstanding start to the growing season. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for another great vintage! This month Jenny and I are set to host a dinner on May 14 at Bacchus Bar & Bistro in Irvine. We will host four more dinners this summer in southern California: The Monarch in Montecito on July 15; Barnoa in San Clemente on July 17; The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla on July 25; and The Wine Vault & Bistro in San Diego on August 25. Visit our Calendar of Events page on our website at www.foxenvineyard.com or go to our Facebook page for more information. SECOND SUNDAYS at FOXEN are back and scheduled throughout summer! This month’s Second Sunday will be on Mother’s Day, May 12. Charcuterie from Joy by the Spoonful will be available for purchase, and the Wave Breakers will perform live. It’s a great way to celebrate spring, summer and mom by enjoying FOXEN wine, eating great food and listening to fun music! Don’t miss out on our club’s exclusive events this summer! The Master & Commander Annual Luncheon is set for June 1, and the Anchor Club Barbecue is scheduled for July 13. If you haven’t already purchased your tickets, I encourage you to do so before these events sell out. And lastly, our 2018 Rosé of Mourvèdre is released and available! As we’ve done in previous years, we are donating $1 for every bottle sold through the end of May to breast cancer research. I invite you to come by our tasting room or give us a call at (805) 9374251 to get your summer’s supply of FOXEN Rosé.

Cheers! Dick Doré

Winemakers’ Notes

May 2019

2016 Pinot Noir, John Sebastiano Vineyard:

2016 was the first year since 2012 that we received double digit rainfall. The refreshed root zones made the vines shout with joy, and they excitedly “broke bud” a bit earlier than normal. After a relatively warm and dry growing season, harvest began mid-August at the John Sebastiano Vineyard. The south-facing blocks on the canyon crest came on August 11, and we finished up two weeks later with our west-facing block. Yields were a normal 2.5-4 tons per acre, and cluster and berry sizes remained small. Our final assemblage included all four clonal lots from four micro-sites, which was dominated by Dijon 828 and then comprised roughly of equal amounts of Dijon 115, 667 & Swan clones. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration after 16 months in very tight grained François Frères French oak barrels (40% new.) The wine is full of “Jujube” berry, spring strawberry, chamomile and baking spice aromas, followed by notes of juicy cranberry, rhubarb and lavender with muddled blackberry flavors. It was an excellent pairing with hoisin quail and duck, as well as rosemaryrubbed pork tenderloin. Some of Dicky Dore’s filé gumbo might be awesome with it. Drink now through 2026. 2016 Pinot Noir, Solomon Hills Vineyard:

Saturday is SNACK DAY – flash your passport to enjoy local chocolates, cupcakes, tacos and more. This year’s swag includes an exclusive lip balm we commissioned from Foxen Canyon Soap Co. just for our guests! Purchase your passport at www.foxencanyonwinetrail.net

We always enjoy our visits to Solomon Hills Vineyard because we get to wear our flip flops because the vines there are pretty much rooted in ancient beach sand. I’m just kidding about the flip flops but not the beach sand. The vines at this site tend to struggle—not just because of the porous sand, but also because of the daily foggy marine influence and prevailing coastal winds. In 2016, we had foggy and windy weather during flowering, which resulted in a poor crop set (shatter) and relatively low yields that averaged two tons per acre. Happily, the quality of the fruit was excellent! We picked all three of our one-acre clonal blocks on August 15 and co-fermented the lot. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration after 16 months in tight-grained French oak barrels (30% new.) This wine jumps out of the glass with aromas of strawberry and raspberry enveloped in a doughy cinnamon crust. Its flavors mirror the aromatics. This would be a tasty pairing with salmon, asparagus salad or risotto, or a simply grilled “pain au levain” Havarti cheese sandwich (throw a roasted pimento pepper in there.) Some of Dicky Dore’s seafood paella would be awesome as well. Drink now through 2026. Production: 400 cases • Retail: $62 96 points - Wine Enthusiast 93 points - JebDunnuck.com 92 points - Vinous

normal rainfall after a three-year drought. The extended drought was particularly hard on our estate dry-farmed Tinaquaic Vineyard. However, no vineyard responded more favorably to the rainfall than our Tinaquaic. Tons per acre doubled from one to slightly more than two tons per acre, and the resulting fruit’s chemistry was excellent. The wine was assembled after 14 months: 88% Cabernet Franc from our upper and lower estate vineyards and 12% Petit Verdot from the lower estate site. The wine was bottled in August of 2018 without any fining or filtration after having spent 22 months in François Frères Bordeaux barrels (50% new.) The wine displays intense aromas of plum, smoked pepper, tarragon and sweet tobacco. On the palate, there are notes of dark plum and pluot enveloped in cigar box and smooth tannins. This would do well with a spicy Sloppy Joe, pulled pork or anything smoked like ribs, brisket or chicken. I would also recommend enjoying this Cabernet Franc with pork loin stuffed with chorizo and dried cranberries or cherries. Mmm…that should be good! Drink now through 2030.
