Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.

O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Upcoming Events This Week Our Bishop, David Graves, will be leading a town hall meeting for the Pensacola District this Sunday, October 7th. The event will be held at 3:00 pm and hosted by Navarre United Methodist Church. This event is important. I’m asking those of you concerned about the upcoming General Conference to attend. I will also be attending and will look forward to hearing from our Resident Bishop. The Town Hall meeting is open to all. My hope is attending this session will lessen some of the anxiety about the upcoming General Conference in St. Louis in February. There is additional information about the Town Hall meeting preparation that you can access at www.awfumc.org. As we approach General Conference, we are facing some other unknowns about the future. We are preparing to initiate the beginning phase of our Master Plan in 2019. Our church is anticipating a capital campaign also in 2019. It is not by chance that we are preaching about the Red Sea Rules which teach us to trust God and continue going forward in times of uncertainty. We seek not to go backward, be lost in confusion, be stuck, but rather to go FORWARD trusting God with the future. The Red Sea Rules and other Biblical teachings, prayer and fasting and our recent Alive at Shalimar event, all are preparing us for the future. Our church has both challenges and opportunities ahead. I look forward to journeying with you through this time. Historically, the church has always risen up in times of challenge. In my heart, this is what I sense is going to happen in the next year. We will emerge even more Biblical and Discipleship focused. Our church in the midst of the challenges is being blown forward by fresh breezes of the Holy Spirit. I fully expect this to be a great time for the church. Please remember to offer your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness in such times. The level of our commitment, discipleship, and leadership ultimately determine how far we can go as a church. In anticipation, some of you are ready to be more involved, so I will be forming a third year of 12x12 in January. Let me know if you are interested! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor [email protected]

CHECK IT OUT !!! Newest arrivals in your library: Capital Gaines by Chip Gaines of Fixer Upper, a refreshing and inspiring account of the now-famous Magnolia endeavors. (P.S. Our copy of The Magnolia Story is missing and would love to be returned!) Another neat and new read is American Wife by Taya Kyle, widow of “American Sniper” Chris Kyle. You’ll no doubt find Taya’s book to be an unforgettable testament to the power of love and faith as well as a moving tribute to her hero husband. Both books are on the Library table. Another P.S, The Magnolia Story isn’t alone in being lost and needing to be found; many other great books, both adult and children would love to be “found” and returned to the library! Check out your bookshelves and bring them “home” to our library shelves, please!!!! “An open and honest guide to making bad relationships better and good relationships great” is the subtitle of a cutting-edge book called Simply Relationships by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott. Authors Cheri Fuller and Ali Plum have taken on the intense and personal relationship between mothers and adult daughters in their book, Mother and Daughter Duet. This mother and daughter have successfully navigated their relationship challenges and share their principles in this interesting book. They suggest that the same can apply to daughters-in-law as well. Finally, Craig and Amy Groeschel have written about the five commitments to marriage that have “fail-proofed” their own in the book From This Day Forward. All can be found (and so many others) on the Christian Living shelf in our amazing little library!
