closing up blocks and speeding up defense to go with the fast hits. We did pretty well the first two sets.” The Patriots, who dropped two in a row after Tuesday night’s loss, have been struggling with finding their consistency in this early part of the season, and White recognizes this fact as a

condition that comes with an inexperienced team. Last season the seniors played the majority of the minutes, and in their absence, other girls are going to have to rise to the challenge of filling in those contributions. In order to help with that, one of the things that White is trying to teach the team is how their emo-

tional state can affect the game. When players bring their emotional energies and channel them towards a game, good things tend to happen. And in moments when the team is flat emotionally, that is when the frustration can set in and cause the team to drop easy plays they would normally make. “Early on there were more of

those emotional points that we could have got momentum from and carried us, I think that would have helped us in the long run,” she said. “I think if we had just gotten a couple of those harder points and won the long rallies, they would have had the momentum to keep us going hard the whole time.”

Dei. Asbury wants to see the Patriots make less mistakes and be smarter with some of their shottaking opportunities. “We finished a lot of shots over the crossbar and took some shots that were a little too deep and were basically free balls for the keeper,” Asbury said. “I think we also have to work on our defense, especially on counter attacks. I don’t think we did a good job on those because we didn’t take care of the ball.”

Blasdel added: “Defensively I think we’ve struggled. We’re improving each game but I think we still need to be a lot more physical, because that’s where we’re lacking. Our communication also isn’t very good right now, but once we work on those things, then I think we’ll be a real sharp team.” For Foerster and the Rangers, even though Tuesday’s game ended up in the loss column, he was ecstatic to see the confidence grow after Helming’s equalizer goal in

the first half. With that energy as well as the scrappy play the Rangers utilized, Foerster believes things should be looking up. “The boys played hard and we knew we had a chance today,” Foerster said. “Our goal was to play physical this game because Heritage Hills is always a physical bunch, and that gave us a lot of confidence on the ball. Once we started to win the balls more, we could build up more of our attack.”

After scoring in the first minute on Tuesday night, Asbury is hoping that the Patriots can do something similar against the No. 3 ranked sectional foe Wildcats on Thursday to help gain an early edge. “Ah, man, that would be great wouldn’t it?” Asbury said with a laugh. “We have to continue to work on being confident and keeping the energy high for 80 minutes. We can’t have bad play on Thursday because Mater Dei has weapons and they’ll kill us.”
