STEP 1: Ask for acceptable documents showing right to work. Please tick the documents you are checking (one document from List 1, two documents from List 2, or one or two documents as specified from List 3).

One original document from List 1: (Permanent Leave to Remain) A passport showing that the holder, or a person named in the passport as a child of the holder, is a British Citizen or a citizen of the UK and colonies having the right of abode in the UK. A Passport/ Identity Card showing that the holder is a national of a European Economic Area country or Switzerland. A residence permit, registration certificate or document certifying or indicating permanent residence, issued by the Home Office to a national of a European Economic Area country or Switzerland. A permanent residence card or document issued by the Home Office to the family member of a national of a European Economic Area country or Switzerland. A Biometric Residence Permit issued by UK Visas and Immigration to the holder which indicates that the person named in it is allowed to stay indefinitely or has no time limit on their stay in UK. This document must be in date at the point it is presented to us. A passport or other travel document endorsed to show that the holder is exempt from immigration control, is allowed to stay indefinitely in the UK, has the right of abode in the UK, or has no time limit on their stay in the UK (A Travel Document which gives Refugee Status to the holder, automatically gives them the permanent right to live and work in the UK.) The passport must be in date at the point it is presented to us.

OR Two original documents from List 2: (Permanent Leave to Remain) An official document giving the person’s permanent National Insurance number and name (e.g. P45, P60, Wage Slip, National Insurance Card or a letter from a government agency) issued by a government agency or previous employer. and one of these….. A full birth certificate issued in the UK, Channel Islands, Ireland or the Isle of Man (which includes the name(s) of at least one of the holder’s parents). A full adoption certificate issued in the UK, Channel Islands, Ireland or the Isle of Man (which includes the name(s) of at least one of the holder’s adoptive parents). A certificate of registration or naturalisation stating that the holder is a British Citizen. A letter issued by the Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration to the holder which indicates that the person named is allowed to stay indefinitely in the UK. An Immigration Status Document (ISD) issued by the Home Office to the holder with an endorsement indicating that the person named in it is allowed to stay and work in the UK indefinitely or has no time limit on their stay (e.g. permanent Residence Permit). An ISD is usually issued when the residence permit cannot be placed in the holder’s national passport (e.g. an asylum seeker who may not have a passport).

OR

List 3 – (Limited Leave to Remain) A passport or travel document endorsed to show that the holder is allowed to stay in the UK and is allowed to do the work in question (Endorsements can be in the form of a Residence Permit or UK Entry Clearance Certificate or Visa stamp in a passport/travel document describing that someone has been given Tier 1/4/5 /Dependant /Ancestral Visa Holder approval). NB: If it states Tier Two/Work Permit holder, please see the fourth bullet point in this next section A Biometric Residence Permit issued by UK Visas and Immigration to the holder indicating that the person can stay in the UK and is allowed to do the work in question (e.g. Tier 1/2/4/5/Dependant/Ancestral Visa Holder). The permit will also outline any restrictions to employment. This card must be in date and not expired. A Residence card or document (e.g. UK Entry Clearance) issued by the Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration to a family member of a national of a European Economic Area country or Switzerland. A work permit/Tier 2 or other approval to take employment (such as a letter of permission) issued by the Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration and a passport or other travel document or a letter issued by the Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration endorsed to show that the holder is able to stay in the UK and is allowed to do the work in question (e.g. a Residence Permit, or a letter confirming Leave to Remain). A certificate of application (which is less than 6 months old) issued by the Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration , to a family member of a national from a European Economic Area country or Switzerland, stating the holder is permitted to take employment, and evidence of verification by UK Visas and Immigration Employer Checking Service (ECS). NB: The Employment Compliance Team will contact the ECS for you. An Application Registration Card (ARC) issued by the Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration, stating that the holder is permitted to take employment, and evidence of verification by UK Visas and Immigration Employer Checking Service (ECS). STEP 2: Check the validity of the documents by satisfying yourself that they are genuine. Please check and tick the following when you are satisfied: Are photographs consistent with the appearance of the person? Are the dates of birth listed consistent across documents, and fit with the appearance of the person? Are expiry dates for limited leave to enter or remain in the UK in the future i.e. they have not passed? Do the endorsements (visa, stamps, hours etc.) show the person is able to do the type of work they are employed for? Are you satisfied that the documents are genuine, have not been tampered with and belong to the holder? Are names consistent across documents, and if not, have you asked for further documents to explain the difference? If they are an international student, have you evidence of their enrolment and their term time dates in their educational establishment? STEP 3: Scan the documents (each page except for blank pages of a passport) and sign the declaration:
