From the Pastor For a college assignment, students were instructed to interview children and to ask them about their views of God. One grade school student responded, “God is like my principal.” At first the college student interpreted that to mean that the child thought of God in terms of being an enforcer of rules. But the child explained, “My principal goes around the schoolyard at recess, making sure everyone gets a chance to play.” The first reading and the gospel both display a very common human characteristic. Moses had chosen 72 men to share in the work of caring for God’s people, and 70 of them had the privilege of being present when God bestowed a special portion of his spirit on them. But, when they discovered that the other two were also given that blessing, they were jealous. Of course, they did not admit it. They instead acted as if the power and prestige of Moses was being diminished because others were sharing in his blessings. The apostles did the same. They were delighted to know that they were sharing in the power of Jesus to cure people of their afflictions, but when they learned that others were also doing so they were concerned. They asked Jesus to stop them from blessing others in his name because they did not belong to their group. They were jealous. Jesus and Moses both came up with the same solution to their concern. They did not think that God’s power or blessings could be limited to only certain persons or certain situations. They pointed out that everyone gets to play. It doesn’t have to involve driving out demons or curing illness or manifesting the power of God in a dramatic way. A person is blessed simply for giving a cup of water because they want to honor Christ present in the one they help. This week Pope Francis traveled to our country to speak powerful words heard by millions. His coming is so different from the ordinary business of daily life that many stopped to pay attention. He is an eloquent voice speaking of God’s mercy, challenging
us to remember and care for the poor, reminding us to use our blessings to make a difference in the lives of those who long for the freedoms we enjoy. We will not be able to attract the same audience. But everyone gets to play, so we have to do our part. Mercy is more than receiving absolution in the confessional. Mercy is reflected in our patience with the annoying people around us. Mercy is reflected in our decision to attribute good motives to a person as we observe them, instead of assuming they are acting in bad faith. Jesus said that the poor will always be with us. And there is more to do than giving away our hand-me-downs to St. Vincent de Paul. Everyone gets to play, so we have to do our part. Make it a family project to prepare a special meal and then invite the person who lives alone for a special evening in their honor. Give away a few hours every week volunteering at North Dallas Shared Ministries. Our hearts are broken as we see the pictures of the desperate families fleeing their homeland, streaming into a foreign land looking for a better life for their children. We wish we could do something. Of course, we have fellow Catholics joining us here at St. Monica who have traveled to our country looking for a better life. And the example of Jesus inspires us to welcome people of other cultures, to welcome families that are different than ours, to welcome each person as a brother or sister in Jesus. Everyone gets to play, so we do our part. Every time we choose to take a moment to greet someone we do not know, or express our gratitude for another’s kindness, or show our gratitude for our blessings by sharing them with someone, we are involved in something powerful. The work of transforming the world with the power of Christ’s love is never finished. It only takes a cup of water given out of love for Christ. And everyone gets to play. –Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk

Honoring Marilyn Marilyn Hicks served as an employee of St. Monica Parish for many years, as Business Manager & Safe Environment Director. In recognition of her many years of service and as a celebration of her retirement, St. Monica is hosting a reception on Sunday, October 11th in the Lower Lounge of the Family Center immediately following the 9:30 am and 11:00 am Masses. Men of Faith, the Tuesday morning Men’s Study Group, begins on October 6th at 5:50 am in Room 109 of the St. Monica Family Center. This fall’s Study will be based on Bishop Robert Barron’s Work The Mystery of God-- Who God Is and Why He Matters. The Study will continue each Tuesday morning through November 10th. Join the Bread Ministry Jesus said we are to love our neighbors as ourselves. A first step in this direction might be to gather and deliver bread and other baked goods and deliver them to North Dallas Shared Ministries, or other preferred donations sites. We are currently in need of volunteers to pick up bread and pastries every other Friday morning between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. at the Tom Thumb at Preston and Frankford in far north Dallas, and to pick up at the Tom Thumb and Central Market at Preston and Royal on Sunday mornings. De El Pastor En un trabajo de preparatoria, se les pidió a los estudiantes que entrevistaran a niños y les preguntaran su opinión acerca de Dios. Un estudiante respondió, “Dios es como mi principal.” Al inicio los estudiantes lo interpretaron como si lo hubiera dicho pensando que Dios era un ser que ejercía las reglas. Pero el niño explicó, “Mi principal se pasea durante el recreo para asegurarse que todos tengan una oportunidad de jugar.” La primera lectura y el Evangelio de hoy tienen una característica humana muy similar. Moisés escogió 72 hombres para compartir el trabajo de cuidar la gente de Dios, 70 de ellos tuvieron el privilegio de presenciar cuando Dios les dio parte especial de su Espíritu. Pero, cuando descubrieron que a los otros dos también se les había dado esa bendición especial, se pusieron celosos. Por supuesto que no lo admitieron, sino al contrario actuaron como si el poder y los privilegios de Moisés desaparecieron porque otros compartían esas bendiciones. Los apóstoles hicieron lo mismo. Se deleitaron al saber que compartían el poder de Jesús de curar las aflicciones de la gente, pero cuando se dieron cuenta que otros también lo estaban haciendo se apuraron. Le pidieron a Jesús que les prohibiera bendecir a otros en su nombre porque no pertenecían a su grupo. Estaban celosos. Jesús y Moisés tuvieron la misma respuesta a esta preocupación. No creían que el poder y las bendiciones de Dios pueden limitarse a un grupo de personas o situaciones. Dejaron saber que todos pueden participar. No tiene que ser expulsando demonios, curando a los enfermos o haciendo manifestaciones dramáticas del poder de Dios. Puede ser simplemente dando un vaso de agua, porque quieren honrar la presencia de Dios en el necesitado. Esta Semana el Papa Francisco viajo a nuestro país para decir palabras poderosas a miles de personas. Su venida es muy diferente a otros negocios ordinarios del diario vivir, muchos se detuvieron para poner atención. Es una voz elocuente que nos
habla de la misericordia de Dios, nos reta a recordar y a cuidar del pobre, nos recuerda que debemos usar nuestras bendiciones para hacer la diferencia en la vida de otros que buscan la libertad que nosotros disfrutamos. No seremos capaces de atraer a la misma audiencia. Pero todos podemos participar y tomar parte. La misericordia es más que recibir la absolución en el confesionario. La misericordia se refleja en nuestra paciencia con las personas que nos fastidian. La misericordia se refleja en nuestra decisión de atribuir buenas cosas a una persona, en vez de asumir que están actuando de mala fe. Jesús nos dice que el pobre siempre estará con nosotros. Hay más que hacer que dar lo que ya no quiero a San Vicente de Paul. Todos podemos participar, por eso debemos poner de nuestra parte. Hacer un proyecto familiar, como es una cena especial e invitar a una persona que vive sola. Dar algunas horas de la semana para servir en el ministerio de North Dallas Shared Ministries. Nuestro corazón se quiebra al ver fotos de familias desesperadas que salen de su tierra, hacia una tierra forastera para buscar una nueva vida para sus hijos. Deseamos poder hacer algo más. Por supuesto tenemos, personas Católicas aquí en Santa Mónica que han viajado a este país para una mejor vida. El ejemplo de Jesús nos inspira a recibir a personas de otra cultura, recibir familias diferentes a las nuestras, recibir a cada persona como hermano o hermana en Cristo. Todos podemos participar, así es que hay que hacer nuestra parte! Cada vez que elegimos tomar el tiempo de saludar alguien que no conocemos, expresamos nuestro agradecimiento por la generosidad de otros, o mostrar agradecimiento por nuestras bendiciones y las compartimos con alguien somos parte de algo poderoso. El trabajo de transformar el mundo con el amor poderoso de Cristo jamás terminara. Solo toma dar un vaso de agua en el amor de Cristo. Todos podemos participar. –Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk
