Should the risk assessment relating to certain equipment require training this will be given before use or the student will be prohibited from using it. Training for all colleagues to identify and report any hazardous or damaged equipment. Any faulty equipment to be labelled and taken out of use. Students will be supervised by an experienced colleague. Students will not be allowed to use hazardous equipment such as cherry pickers / mobile access platforms and will not be expected to undertake hazardous activities for example emptying and cleaning deep fat fryers, cleaning meat slicers/food mixers and food mincers, cleaning or operating balers, compactors, dock levellers or scissor lifts and guiding delivery vehicles in reversing and manoeuvring. In addition, students will not be allowed to work in the

All premises have established fire/emergency procedures in place. Students will walk the evacuation route and have all fire exits pointed out on their store tour. In the event of an evacuation the student will be escorted to the identified evacuation point by their supervising colleague. If the student is injured whilst in our store a first aider will attend and the accident reported adhering to our current process.

The People Manager will complete an Induction with the student, including the health & safety guidance and the “working safely” DVD. A full store tour will be completed prior to any work being carried out by the student. The supervising colleague must demonstrate the right way to complete a task prior to the student trying it

Good Housekeeping is included in all Induction training. If an injury occurs the students supervising colleague will be alerted and the “clean as you go” process will be adhered to.



Any damaged flooring is highlighted and reported to their point of contact to cordon off until a repair can be completed.



Instore housekeepers review areas across the store across a store specific timeframe.



All colleagues receive training to remove any trip hazards or pick items /stock from the floor at Induction including the Fire prevention DVD

Verbal briefing and walk around by the People Manager/supervising colleague describing the hazards which may be encountered within an area when completing the store tour. Students will receive close supervision by the supervising colleague. If students are expected to work in the freezer they will be issued with a freezer jacket and suitable gloves before commencing work and will be closely supervised. Training and demonstration is given at Induction or by their point of contact for all students regarding the correct process for safe lifting and handling and the use of the equipment available to assist. Students will not be asked to perform any Manual Handling tasks which present a significant risk of injury eg carrying large or heavy loads. Students will only be expected to lift light goods and will be briefed to always seek help if the load is too heavy to move. Students will not use hazardous mechanical handling equipment e.g. fork lift trucks, powered pedestrian pallet trucks (master movers) and will be trained and closely

supervised if expected to use pump trucks or pallet trucks. Students will receive close supervision by the supervising colleague. Students will not use any chemicals which they have not been trained to use by their point of contact and close supervision will be provided at all times. Some cleaning chemicals are on sale within the store and students are not to touch any spillages unless specific training has been given by their point of contact.



Students’ working day will always cease at the Tesco store at 5 pm.



Students’ supervision will end when they leave the building at the end of their working day.
