Jill Alberts jokingly calls herself a “pioneer.” Four years ago, she opened her own jewel box of a boutique, Jill Alberts Jewelry, on Roger Williams Avenue in Ravinia. She recalled that at the time, about the only businesses on the block were Field Violin Workshop, Joy Cleaners, the knitting store Magic Needle Inc., and a tanning salon (on which the sun has since set).

What the Ravinia Business District now has is an inviting mix of restaurants, retail, and services. Some are new kids on the block, but others are neighborhood mainstays, such as Piero’s Pizza, Ravinia Barbeque, and Jos. A. Palminteri Insurance. Alberts, whose jewelry designs have been found at such stores as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, was right. Today, the Ravinia Business District has something it had been missing: buzz. Over the past three years, there has been an influx of new businesses that have garnered area-wide recognition and have made Roger Williams a destination location. The newest addition is ZuZu’s Tea House. Zuzu’s has the cachet of being owned by musician Billy Corgan, a Highland Park resident and front man of The Smashing Pumpkins. Indeed the Ravinia Business District has “a lot of positives,” noted Doug Purington, publicity director for the Ravinia Neighbors Association, a non-profit organization devoted to preserving Ravinia’s unique
“It’s important to have a vibrant commercial area with a lot of small local businesses,” Alberts said. “It’s nice to be able to walk someplace for lunch or dinner, and also pick up your dry cleaning.” The presence of Gordon in Ravinia and other hair and nail salons is also key to having a good mix of businesses.

“I think it’s a great little street,” she said of her decision to move her jewelry manufacturing and design business out of her home, which is just around the corner from her shop. “I thought the location had great potential.”

This (location) was the perfect spot and it was just the right time in my life to do it.”

not found in grocery stores, said manager Sharon Mackin-Norberg. “We felt it was a natural for the Ravinia area, being so close to the Ravinia Festival,” she said. Mackin-Norberg also is at the helm at ZuZu’s, which will also feature offerings unique to the area. The teahouse specializes in teas from all over the world as well as coffees and “creative pastries” from local bakeries, such as the Bent Fork. The shop’s desserts, which include cookies, cupcakes and custard, recently took top honors in a Patch.com Reader’s Poll. “I knew about Highland Park and spent a lot of time there,” echoed Paulson, “but I was pretty much ignorant that there was a little business district south of Highland Park.” Increased signage is also atop the RNA’s wish list, along with improved streetscaping and such enhanced amenities as better lighting in the public areas, benches, bike

Pleasing to the Eye Enhancing the area’s streetscape is also a major objective of the Ravinia Business District Alliance (RBDA), a group created by the city to promote Ravinia businesses and activities. Katie Wiswald, Chair of the RBDA, said it is important that the area’s
businesses, property owners, and residents work together in offering the design team assistance in establishing a cohesive branding element that will clearly identify the area. Wiswald said that to this end, two outside “groups have been chosen by the Ravinia Business District Alliance and approved by the City Council. One group will work to offer a streetscape plan for the area, and another will provide information about the area’s infrastructure.” Until further enhancements are made, business owners are buoyed by the changes they’ve seen in the last five years, which they hope bode well for the district’s future. Ravinia Florist is scheduled to open soon, and there is widespread hope that the long-vacant space once occupied by neighborhood icon Shelton’s will someday re-open as a new breakfast/lunch establishment.

Moraine Dog Beach
Highland Park has always been a breed apart when it comes to providing local dog owners with amenities and services for their beloved companions. The city, for example, has just unleashed a new dog park at the south end of Fink Park. The new park was designed to answer residents’ requests for a yearround off-leash dog park that is more accessible than the one at Moraine Park Dog Beach, said Park District of Highland Park Director of Parks Ted Baker. The new park has been in the works for more than two years, and its planning has included input from local dog owners. Topping residents’ wish lists, Baker said, was a dog park that, unlike Moraine with its long stairway leading down to the beach, was a park that is ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. Residents also wanted a park with separate fenced sections for big dogs and small dogs. The Fink facility has all this, plus wash stations, a dog drinking fountain, benches, and other features. Moraine Dog Beach, however, remains a popular option. The Dog Beach is open from April through October. During the winter months dogs can romp at the Highland Park Golf Learning Center, 2205 Skokie Valley Road. A picture permit card is required for all three Park District facilities. The fee is $40 per dog for residents and $140 for nonresidents. Owners can register their pets at Heller Nature Center, 2821 Ridge Road, or they can download an application online.

Rover’s Place is “where your dog is treated like royalty,” said Ruth Ann Cooper, the facility’s marketing manager. “We roll out the red carpet for your dog.” Buddy, a 9-year-old golden doodle, has walked Rover’s red carpet “literally since a few months after he was born,” said his owner and local resident Julie Stone. “Once I pull up to Rover’s with Buddy and he gets out of the car, he drags me inside.” Stone said she knows her dog loves all the attention Rover’s Place staff gives her dog — especially all the ball throwing. Cooper said everyone who works at Rover’s feels it is important that visiting dogs have just as much fun and feel just as comfortable there as they do when they are at home. For that reason, Rover’s offers “a kind of feng shui approach in terms of atmosphere that includes classical music and scented candles.” But technology is not ignored! In the suites area, a television set is often tuned to one of the guests’ favorite channels, “Animal Planet.” Matt Krieser, a Highland Park native and Barking Lot President and CEO, does not doubt how important it is that a dog be treated just as well outside the home as in it. “I believe the majority of people view their dog as a part of their family, and we’re going to treat a pet as if it were a (customer’s) son or daughter.”
Kreiser, who owns the Barking Lot with his brother, grew up “very dog,” he said. “We always had three dogs in the house, and we always had a dream of doing something related to dogs. The original inspiration was to create a kennel that was more like a vacation spot for dogs, and a place that they would want to come back.” The Barking Lot’s slogan proclaims the facility offers “everything under one woof” (save for veterinarian services). In addition to providing overnight boarding, daycare, and training, also offered are pick-up and drop off services, at-home dog walking, and all-natural, high-end dog food and treats. The food is from a Lisbon, Ohio company that, Freeman said, “has never had a recall in more than 34 years. They are all gluten-free.” A marketer for three decades, Freeman became involved with the nationwide Pet Chef Express organization as a way to “help the community,” he said. “Highland Park dog owners really love their dogs. This is an opportunity for me to help them help their dogs live longer and have healthier lives.”
Every dog, they say, has its day, and in our area, there are two days that are of special interest to man and woman’s best friend. The first is Woofstock, and the second is the Spooky Pooch Parade. Woofstock is the Highland Park Park District’s annual autumnal dog-and-people party. This year’s free event, which will be held at the city’s new dog park in Fink Park, “will be much more accessible than in past years,” said Emily Biang, Communications Coordinator for the Park District of Highland Park, and, as always, “it will be a great way for members of the community to get together and share their passion for their dogs.”
But if someone really wants to make a dog’s day, he or she can adopt a pooch from one of several area nokill shelters, including Orphans of the Storm (2200 Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods, 847-945-0235), Save-A-Pet (31664 County Highway 49, Grayslake, 847-740-7788), and Tails of Hope (1628 Old Deerfield Road, Highland Park, 847-557-9554). All three shelters specialize in providing furry friends to good homes.

The Spooky Pooch Parade is the Chicago Botanic Garden’s annual fall event for dogs and the people who love them. What began years ago as the Garden’s The Barking Lot wintertime “Reindog Parade” morphed into an October event to take advantage of better weather, said Julie McCaffrey, manager of Media Relations at the Garden. This year’s parade will be Oct. 29. Advance tickets are $14 for members, and $17 for non-members. All tickets at the door will be $20. Past parades have had up to 300 dogs, said McCaffrey, who added that, “Dog-owners look forward to this event every year. Spectators like it as much as the owners and the dogs do.”

The lyrics to the theme from the popular 1980 - 90s TV show “Cheers” suggested, “Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.” And for adults over 50 in our community, the place to go where people are “always glad you came” is the Highland Park Senior Center (HPSC). About a dozen years ago, urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the phrase “the third place.” He called a person’s “first place” his or her home, and the “second place” where he or she worked. The third place was identified as where a person enjoyed additional creative and/or social interaction. For TV’s Norm and Cliff, it was the bar at Cheers. For Highland Parkers such as Irving Moses, it is the Senior Center.
Indeed the view of Lake Michigan from the exercise room is spectacular. The Center is located at 54 Laurel Avenue, which is the last house on the right side of the street, facing the lake front. A private residence designed by noted architect William Mann and built in the late 1920’s for General Robert E. Wood, former Chairman of Sears, Roebuck & Co., the home is a local landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the building is indeed a place conducive for members to learn or improve on a skill or talent, the sense of community the Center fosters is a moveable feast. HPSC offers many fun and entertaining trips and special events to meet members’ wide range of interests. For example, this summer, sports fans shouldn’t miss the Senior Center’s trip to see the White Sox play the Minnesota Twins at U.S. Cellular Field on July 20. No ordinary day at the ballpark, the outing will include a patio party featuring barbecue ribs, Cajun
Moses started coming to the Center before he retired as an architect, a profession in which he said he, “built 250 houses in Highland Park alone.” Always interested in painting, he has, for the last 10 years, taught oil and acrylic painting at the HPSC. “Let me do the math,” he said, “I’ve been a painter 80 years — since I was 5 years old.” Although he comes to the Center three times a week, it is on Wednesday mornings that he teaches his 2 - hour class, an experience he finds a “real pleasure.” In addition to painting and ceramics classes, the Senior Center provides a wide array of other programming that includes intergenerational activities and such exercise classes as Zumba and Tai Chi. Member and Center volunteer Shelly Fairman is a fan of Mix It Up classes, which focus on strength training, toning, and cardio workouts. 28

event is a great opportunity for older adults to have fun, compete with area peers, and receive recognition for their efforts. The Senior Olympics is open to seniors of all ability levels, and includes more than 30 events that include tennis, bowling, swimming, biking, track and field, bocce ball, and volleyball. In addition, IPRA will host an 18 - hole golf outing on July 25.
Zumba Class
For members with an interest in the great outdoors, the Center is collaborating with the Park District of Highland Park to offer “Lunch and Learn” nature workshops. Birds do it, bees do it, and seniors can learn how plants follow suit on July 20 at a Heller Nature Center program with the intriguing name, “The Sex Life of Plants.” Another Heller nature session open to seniors August 24 will examine wildlife monitoring. Lunch will be served at both programs. For members who want to mix it up a bit, the Center’s summer “Mix and Mingle” series includes a trivia night at Gabe’s Backstage Lounge in Highwood. Also offered is a Ravinia Festival dinner and dance excursion.

Wieland Flowers What’s old is new again at Wieland Flowers. Local resident Laura Rafferty recently purchased Highland Park’s oldest flower shop, in business since 1931. Rafferty sells bouquets, blooming plants, and stunning arrangements from her beautifully restored shop. She has transformed the look of the store by bringing it back to its original appearance that includes a tin ceiling and crown molding. Her past career as an interior designer is obvious when you step into this charming space full of fragrant flowers and greenery.
Rafferty and her assistant Sue Grayson make all the arrangements. “It’s nice to be creative,” Rafferty said, and “to meet nice people in your work.” Wes and Willy clothes are designed with a rough and tumble boy in mind, and Geisheker said the items are “super comfortable, pre-washed all cotton, of amazing quality, and very, very cool. Also Wes and Willy has the best swimsuits in the industry. Not only do their colors last through daily plunges into the chlorine pools, but the suits dry super fast.” Highland Park is “the best place on the North Shore to have a store,” Geisheker said. North Shore resident L’Heureux and his mother Dottie own the shop. Brian is the artist, and Dottie is actually a client, coming in for services from her home outside Omaha every three weeks. “My mom is addicted to her lash extensions,” L’Heureux said. L’Heureux began his career in the beauty industry as a personal assistant in the television division of Warner Bros., where he worked for 12 years. Before setting up shop in Highland Park, he was dividing his time among three places — Chicago, L.A., and Miami — when he decided he wanted less commuting and also that he wanted to settle in at a salon. He opened his shop in Highland Park, “because it felt like home.” L’Heureux said his salon “offers a high end service with a casual feeling. I don’t want to work in a stuffy environment, and we have fun at the shop,” he said, adding that there is no other salon in the area that specializes in eye-enhancing products. 2012 Student Honorees
Student Honor Dinner Twenty-seven exceptional HPHS seniors were honored by the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce for excellence in academics, sports, community service and extracurricular activities, as well as their special character. This was the 47th year of the annual Chamber event. Academic Tutoring Centers served as the event’s Presenting Sponsor, aligning with its mission to help students succeed. Highlights of the evening included a funny yet touching video produced by the HPHS media department, and Principal Brad Swanson’s insightful, personalized comments about each student. In addition, individual $1000 scholarships toward college were awarded by the following generous donors: Martha & Lorry Hershenson and Danielle Mayer in honor of William S. Bradford, DDS and William S. Bradford, Jr.; Highland Park Chamber of Commerce; First Bank of Highland Park; American Legion Post 145 Highland Park; NorthShore University HealthSystem-Highland Park Hospital; Ravinia Festival; and Good Morning Rotary Club. Students were selected by the high school. The Highland Park Chamber of Commerce has just launched a new dynamic peer-topeer forum called Open Circle. Chamber Executive Director Ginny Glasner said, “Many businesses face common issues and concerns, and Open Circle is an informal way for business professionals to share challenges and ideas, and hopefully learn solutions from their contemporaries.” Each hour-long Open Circle session will tackle a different topic of interest to business people. The “Masters” of Amateur Golf The 110th Western Amateur Championship, sponsored by the Western Golf Association and the Evans Scholar Foundation, returns to Highland Park’s Exmoor Country Club from July 30 to August 4. Dating back to 1899, the Western Amateur is one of the oldest, most important tests in amateur golf. The 2012 tournament will host 156 of the best amateur golfers from around the world. Among past winners are Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard, and Ryan Moore. The Western Amateur presents the opportunity to view up-close-and-personal
the best amateur golfers in the world without any charge for admission or parking. “It’s as close as you can get to the action at a major sporting event,” said Robert Saliba, co-Chairman of the Exmoor Tournament committee. The ultimate beneficiary of the tournament is the Evans Scholars Foundation and the 860 young men and women attending 19 colleges on an Evans scholarship. This year’s Taste of Highland Park will be held August 24th through the 26th coinciding with the always popular Port Clinton Art Festival, with its fabulous art offerings, on the 25th and 26th.
