A new multi-year study from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City shows that testosterone therapy helped elderly men with low testosterone levels and pre-existing coronary artery disease reduces their risks of major adverse cardiovascular events-including strokes, heart attacks, and death. The study, presented at the American College of Cardiology 65th Annual scientific Session, showed that patients who received testosterone as part of their follow-up treatment fared much better that patients who didn't. Non-testosterone-therapy patients were 80 percent more likely to suffer an adverse event. *** Skin tests traditionally used to predict allergies to amoxicillin, one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in children, are ineffective according to a new study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. The study determined that oral provocation or challenge test, with appropriate follow up, was a more efficient and safer screening method for diagnosing non-life threatening reactions to amoxicillin in children. *** Drugs commonly proscribed to treat Parkinson’s disease have been linked to impulse control disorders such as pathological gambling, compulsive buying, hypersexuality and binge eating in some patients, researchers report in the journal Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics. The primary risk factor for ICDs is the use of a class of Parkinson’s disease medications called dopamine agonists, which help control tremors and other Parkinson’s symptoms. These drugs include pramipexole (Mirapex) and ropinirole (Requip).
