The King is Coming Pt. 2

“The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!’ And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, ‘Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!’” John 12:12-15 ESV WOW, what a sight that must have been! Even today’s campaign trails don’t hold a candle to it! And to think, that in this same crowd shouting “HOSANNA!” at the coming of THE KING, were probably many of the same people shouting “CRUCIFY HIM!” only days later. They were victims of their own misguided expectations. On the one hand, their expectations were to be expected. The above NT verse from John contains a quote from the OT book of Zachariah written over 500 years before. This prophecy stated that the King would come and he would arrive in just the way that Jesus came into Jerusalem, on a donkey. That part of the expectation was correct. It was the nature of the King and His Kingdom where they were mistaken. Jesus was both fully God and fully man, a mystery still. As Philippians 2 tells us: “He chose to make himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Phil 2:7). The whole humble manger scene was lost on the vast majority of society. The expectation was that their king would come as a great and mighty warrior and leader of men, taking his place on an earthly throne and throwing the Roman occupiers out on their ears!

We will also help them gain a proper understanding of Jesus AND those who follow him; “He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful” - Revelation 17:14 ESV.
