Clinic with a Heart

Some people roll their eyes when they hear talk about New Year’s resolutions as these are often fleeting intentions to do better in the New Year. One New Year’s resolution you definitely should keep is updating your Will or Living Trust. Or if you don’t have a Will or Living Trust yet—you should consider creating one. If you don’t create your own plan, the State of Nebraska has one for you. The state’s plan may benefit people who don’t need it, or worse yet, those who would quickly spend your hard-earned resources in frivolous ways. Promises
How can I fulfill these Baptismal Promises? 1. Pray for your child in their presence. 2. Take them to church with you so they will begin to know they are God’s child and part of God’s family. 3. Sing them Christian songs. 4. Tell them how much Jesus loves them. 5. Fold their hands in yours as you pray a simple prayer. 6. Look at simple Bible storybooks, pointing out pictures of Jesus. 7. Point out things that God made. 8. Every night when they go to bed, make the sign of the cross on their forehead and say a blessing. Keep doing this. Ideas for a blessing are:

It is not water that does these things, but God’s Word with the water and our trust in this Word. Water by itself is only water, but with the word of God it is a life-giving water which by grace gives the new birth through the Holy Spirit.
What is God’s promise? In Mark 16:16 our Lord Jesus Christ says: “Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.” (NLT)
IV. What does Baptism mean for daily living?

for Caring Everyday Listening
Whether you are a parent or a teacher, teaching children to listen, truly listen, is a challenge. Young people are much more geared to respond to technology than to people. However, it’s our responsibility to help them learn active listening strategies which help them with relationships and learning. Here are things to do: ff Teach paraphrasing: Restating in their own words what was said to them conveys they were truly listening and understood correctly. ff Model good listening behavior: Enhance your own listening skills. Help them see you value the skill and what they have to say with no interruptions or distractions. ff Talk less: Some kids tune out after a while. State your point simply, one time.
