in prayer and scripture.

Chair time helps me remember that I’m not alone, I’m not in charge, that God is there for me and for the other people and situations that have me feeling anxious or worried. I also read the Bible during this time. I often learn something or get a new perspective. My next step is to journal what I’m thinking so I can reflect on what I learn. Before I end chair time I pray. I try to stay open to what God may be wanting for me and from me in the upcoming day. For me small changes are the way I make progress and over time they add up. I have a long way to go but I do think God is at work in my life and chair time helps me remember to be grateful for that blessing.

NEW! Northeast High School Food Market

To say I was and can be spiritually flabby would be an understatement. But when I read the book Simplify: Ten Practices to Unclutter Your Soul, by Bill Hybels as a part of the small group series at Southwood, I learned about “chair time”. Pastor Hybels suggests taking 15 minutes a day to be with God in prayer and scripture. Since that class I have had chair time as a daily practice with few exceptions. I cannot say that it has made an instant change in my life, but I can say that it has made a significant impact. I feel the presence of God with me throughout my day. When those “hamster thoughts” start running on their wheels in my head, saying, “Isn’t this awful? What should we do? The world Pastor Hybels is a scary place!”, I take a deep breath and suggests taking remember how I felt during chair time. And 15 minutes a day I say, “Thank you for this day, God”. And then I go on, usually with a smile on my face. to be with God

Listen, Learn, Pray

Monday, October 3 • 7:00 p.m. • Fellowship Hall In an effort to grow in our understanding of some of the issues of our day, Southwood is hosting sessions called: Listen, Learn, Pray. These special sessions feature community leaders speaking about issues confronting our culture, city, country and the world. It will be a time to Listen, to Learn, and to Pray as we grow in our understanding of the complexities and injustices many face in this world. The next session of Listen, Learn, Pray will be a time to review the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s statement on the Death Penalty. As Nebraskans prepare to vote on this issue, members have asked about what “the church believes.” Join Dan Klaus, Attorney at Law, as well as President of Southwood’s Church Council on Monday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Visit southwoodlutheran.org for a complete listing of events and registrations.
