WHY? God and Suffering

July 19, 2020

God Never Wastes Our Suffering Genesis 37-50 Genesis 37:23-24, 28 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it… 28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt. Genesis 39:1 Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. Genesis 39:2-6 2 The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 His master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. 4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. 5 From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had, in house and field. Genesis 39:20 20 And Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison. Genesis 39:21-23 21 But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22 And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it. 23 The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph's charge, because the LORD was with him. And whatever he did, the LORD made it succeed. Genesis 45:4-8 4 And he said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. Genesis 50:20 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

Rejoice, the Lord is King

He Will Hold Me Fast

Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore, Rejoice, give thanks and sing, And triumph evermore

When I fear my faith will fail Christ will hold me fast When the tempter would prevail He will hold me fast I could never keep my hold Through life's fearful path For my love is often cold He must hold me fast

CHORUS: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! The Lord Our Savior reigns, The God of truth and love; When He had purged our stains He took His seat above; His kingdom cannot fail, He rules o’er earth and Heav’n, The keys of death and hell Are to our Jesus giv’n. Rejoice in glorious hope! Jesus the Judge shall come, And take His servants up To their eternal home.

Sovereign Over Us There is strength within the sorrow, There is beauty in our tears, And You meet us in our mourning, With a love that casts out fear You are working in our waiting You are sanctifying us When beyond our understanding You are teaching us to trust CHORUS: Your plans are still to prosper You've not forgotten us You're with us in the fire & the flood Faithful forever, perfect in love You are sov'reign over us You are wisdom unimagined Who could understand Your ways? Reigning high above the heavens Reaching down in endless grace You're the lifter of the lowly You’re compassionate and kind You surround and You uphold me And Your promises are my delight Even what the enemy means for evil You turn it for our good You turn it for our good And for Your glory Even in the valley You are faithful You're working for our good You're working for our good.

CHORUS: He will hold me fast He will hold me fast For my Savior loves me so He will hold me fast Those He saves are His delight Christ will hold me fast Precious in His holy sight He will hold me fast He'll not let my soul be lost His Promises shall last Bought by Him at such a cost He will hold me fast For my life He bled and died Christ will hold me fast Justice has been satisfied He will hold me fast Raised with Him to endless life He will hold me fast Till our faith is turned to sight When He comes at last. Until That Day Comes There will come a day when God will be our light And the dark of night will be sent to its grave And there will come a time when we will live forever In a city that will never pass away Oh how my soul yearns and even faints CHORUS: But until that day comes I will go and warn the darkness That the light of Jesus Christ has overcome And until that day comes I will speak to all injustice That the moment of its ending is sure to come Oh the day will surely come We who are His church must prepare His coming And go and tell the nations of His worth And let us give our lives To the calling that is on us To bind up every wound and every hurt All things will be made right We’ll stand in holy light A pure and spotless bride Before the Lord most high On the dawning of that day Old things will pass away Until we see His face let us prepare the way.
