Wedding Guidelines

“And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three, and the greatest of these is Love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13

Greensboro First United Methodist Church One Church Two Campuses North Campus South Campus 202 W. Broad Street 4741 Carey Station Road Greensboro, Georgia 30642 Page 1 of 17

The Greensboro First United Methodist Church -North Campus- building is a unique House of God and has been dedicated to the Glory of God for worship, preaching, Holy Communion and the celebration of holy events such as weddings and baptisms. We are delighted you have chosen to have your wedding in our church. A church wedding is a service of worship that celebrates the union of two individuals while honoring God. Keeping this in mind, the following guidelines should assist you in preparation for your upcoming wedding.

Setting the Wedding Date Your wedding and rehearsal dates may be placed on the church calendar by making a reservation through our church office. Reservations can be made by calling 706-4537064 and speaking to the facilities coordinator. Making your reservation insures that there are no conflicts with other events in the sanctuary. Dates may be booked up to six months in advance. The $300 reservation fee and the $500 security deposit are due from non-members within 7 days of scheduling in order to reserve the date on the calendar. The reservation fee is non-refundable and will be applied to the cost of the wedding. Weddings and receptions are discouraged during Holy Week, Sundays, New Year’s Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

The Wedding Hostess The wedding hostess is the personal contact and information resource between the church and you. When your wedding is put on the calendar, a hostess will be assigned to you. The hostess will be the person who will open the building, turn on the lights, adjust the heating or air conditioning, go over the rules and regulations and answer any questions you have about the use of the building. Please note that the wedding hostess is NOT the same as a “wedding director” or “wedding planner”. The wedding hostess will be present at the wedding rehearsal and the ceremony as the official representative for the church. It is highly recommended that the bride, wedding director, and wedding hostess be in close contact and schedule a meeting to plan a “walk-through” prior to the wedding rehearsal. This will alleviate any potential problems and will optimize the efficiency of the rehearsal. Please coordinate a meeting with these individuals before the day of the rehearsal.

The Wedding Director The wedding director is responsible for making sure that every aspect of the wedding planning and wedding day happens without complications. The bride and director will meet/talk within two weeks of securing the church to discuss the director’s responsibilities. Page 2 of 17

Arranging for the Pastor Please contact the pastor well in advance of the wedding so that adequate preparations can be made. If a Greensboro First United Methodist pastor is officiating, he/she will want to arrange a series of counseling sessions prior to the ceremony. The officiating minister must be an ordained Christian minister and will participate at the discretion of the Senior Pastor of Greensboro First United Methodist Church. The officiating minister must be present at the rehearsal. The marriage license must be given to the officiating minister at the rehearsal. If an outside minister is invited to perform the ceremony, please inform our Senior Pastor as soon as possible.

Communion The sacrament of Holy Communion in the United Methodist Church is, by doctrine, an open table. Therefore, any communion offered must be available to the entire body of attending guest. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Selecting the Wedding Music The church wedding is a religious and spiritual experience. Therefore, it is necessary that the instrumental and vocal music used in your wedding ceremony be appropriate to the spiritual significance of the occasion. It is suggested that you choose music that honors God, regardless of the style. Please contact Alexis Renee Ford, Director of Music Ministries to schedule the rehearsal and wedding; 302-766-4037. Guest musicians must be approved by the Music Ministries Director. Should you need assistance in selecting music for your wedding; the Music Minister can advise you. Guest musicians must be approved by the Music Minister. The sound system is to be operated by the Greensboro FUMC sound system technician only. Our sound system has been preset to meet the needs of our sanctuary. A sound technician will be assigned to you by the church office. The fee for the sound system technician will be $150 based on a five hour maximum for the rehearsal and wedding. There will be an additional $100 fee should video be required. Any music and/or videos to be used during the wedding are to be given to the wedding hostess NO LATER THAN ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE WEDDING for review by the sound system technician. At present, the sanctuary has a grand piano and organ that may be used in your wedding ceremony. The piano and organ cannot be moved. All music and videos must be approved by the Greensboro FUMC wedding hostess/sound system technician at least 3 days prior to the wedding. Greensboro First United Methodist Church reserves the right to deny the performance or use of music/video deemed inappropriate. Page 3 of 17

Flowers and Decorations It should be remembered that a wedding is a service of worship and consecration, a religious ceremony. The church may be decorated as festively and beautifully as possible, but it must maintain the atmosphere of a sanctuary – a House of Worship. Positively no food or drink is allowed in the sanctuary. Failure to comply will result in loss of deposit. You are free to contract your own florist. It is your responsibility to make your florist aware of the policies of the church. Please make the florist aware that the church furnishings may NOT be moved or removed. No tacks, nails, tape, glitter or wire may be used when decorating. Also, please inform your florist that only non-drip candles may be used in our sanctuary. No floral petals, live or silk, may be dropped down the aisle. *North Campus Center aisle is approx. 45 ½ feet long; *South Campus Center aisle is approx. 70 feet long. All decorating must be done the day of the wedding and taken down immediately following the wedding ceremony. The florist will be responsible for removing the floral decorations immediately following the ceremony. If you wish to leave the flowers to be enjoyed by the church, please note your intent to do so when making the wedding reservation so that it may be noted in the Sunday morning bulletin.

Wedding Photography/Videography Wedding pictures provide a lasting memory of the wedding ceremony. However, it is imperative that photographers and videographers not detract from the sacredness of the wedding ceremony. It is your responsibility to inform your photographer or videographer about the policies of the church. Pictures may be taken in the church before and after the ceremony. During the ceremony, no flash pictures are permitted. Members of the wedding party, family members and guests may not take pictures during the ceremony. These actions can be distracting to the ceremony and will not be permitted. For clarification, “during the ceremony” is defined as “from the time the musicians begin playing until the couple reaches the back of the sanctuary at the close of the service”. Videotaping is permitted. However, no special lighting may be used during the processional, ceremony or recessional. All videotaping must be done from a stationary position during the ceremony.
