problems don’t just materialize out of thin air. They are the result of sinful behavior present within those communities. The topic of the Israelites’ moral choices and disobedience to God surfaces numerous times in both Ezra and Nehemiah. Nehemiah 5 serves as a case study where the greed and excess of some members of the community was leading to poverty and slavery among other members. Nehemiah addressed the matter by challenging those in the wrong, and they, instead of bristling at his challenge, recognized the truth in it and took steps to make changes. As a church, we want to continue working in the realm of social issues and community transformation, but may we be ever reminded that the greatest need people have is for a relationship with God and a lifestyle becoming ever-more in line with his best. For social ills are really moral matters, and their solutions must include the spiritual component.

Living the Story: Jonah

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Jonah 3)—Jonah clearly wasn’t an enthusiastic messenger to the city of Nineveh, but proclaim God’s message he did. The citizens and the king responded in a very unexpected way, heeding the words of Jonah, turning from their evil acts, and fasting in hopes that God might turn from his path of judgment. The Assyrians’ actions of repentance and contrition move God and cause him to change his course of action, form judgment to forgiveness. Here, in the form of a foreign king and his city, rests one of the Bible’s strongest pictures of repentance and forgiveness, and it reminds us that the pathway to salvation in this life and the next passes through both.

Many in the community have donated supplies which volunteers have delivered to shelters, churches and First Responders. Team members rolled up their sleeves to pull up carpet, remove dry wall, move furniture and clean out the invasive water from homes, churches and the local Islamic Center.

These efforts will continue as long as we continue to receive requests for storm related assistance, so if you have volunteered already or are planning to volunteer…Thank You! If you know of someone with a storm-related need, please let us know.
