Durham Academy Acceptable Use Policy 2013 - 2014 Durham Academy (DA) provides network and technology resources to enrich the academic experiences of students, faculty, and staff. The use of the network and technology rests on the school’s mission of providing students an education that will enable him or her to live a moral, happy, and productive life, and requires students to accept the same ethical responsibilities found in all the other areas of school life. The general rules and overall mission of the school are a sound basis for good decision making about technology. It is the student’s responsibility to treat the technology and fellow users with the proper care and respect. We expect students to be respectful, thoughtful, and careful in their use of language in their online communications and in their behavior while online. In this document, we have tried to address the most common issues relating to technology use at Durham Academy. A digital version of this policy will be on the Durham Academy website. Your Durham Academy Accounts and Passwords You are responsible for your Durham Academy network, email, and online accounts and their passwords. Create secure passwords and do not reveal your passwords to anyone, except your parents, teachers, or the Office of Information Technology staff. 1. You should be aware the school may review files and other communications to maintain the integrity of the network, and to ensure all users are using the network responsibly. 2. Consequences For Policy Violations Durham Academy will investigate violations of these general rules and guidelines and any more specific rules sent or posted at school. Depending upon the situation and the severity, the school may take disciplinary action, including warning, suspension, and termination of your access to iPads, Computers, email, and the network, and suspension from school. The school will also address any inappropriate use of the Internet, on or off the network or the Durham Academy website, including any harassing, insulting, or threatening language. Violations of the rules and guidelines in this policy reflect not only upon you, but also upon the school. 3. Durham Academy Acceptable Use Policy 2013 - 2014 Thank you for all of your support in helping everyone in the community use technology wisely. With all of us in the community using technology wisely, we can better utilize the promise of mobile technology to improve the learning environment. DAILE Moodle You must be a student or teacher at Durham Academy in order to access the courses. Use your school provided user name and password to log in. If your teacher has placed a key on the course you are registering for, make sure to get this key as you will need it to register. The ability to message within DAILE Moodle allows protected and efficient communication between members of our learning community. Realizing that logs are kept of all transactions, students should practice appropriate forms of communication. Instant Message (IM) language is allowed only within the messaging components of DAILE Moodle. Student E-mail Accounts Students in grades 4 through 12 are provided da.org email accounts. These accounts will allow teachers and students to easily communicate. The da.org email account is the only e-mail account that will be allowed during the school day, as it is necessary to archive and monitor the communication that takes place between students. All email accounts are personal, however system administrators have access to them in the event of a problem. Accounts may not be used to harass, bully, send or forward “chain” letters, conduct business or sign up for other accounts. Google Apps for Education Google Apps for Education at DA will provide access to digital storage, Google Docs (Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Presentations) and Sites. Use of these tools will be for schoolrelated projects. Other collaborative web-based tools may be introduced in the future. Veracross Durham Academy utilizes Veracross, a student management system, for the day-to-day functions of the school, including admissions, billing, attendance, grading, and scheduling. Parents are able to access their student's information through their Veracross Parent Portal. In their portal they may update family information, view and pay student billing and access contact information for other Durham Academy families. Standards for use of the system by parents or students are governed by the code of conduct set forth in the enrollment agreement and student handbook. Activities not mentioned above but which violate Durham Academy's code of student conduct are not permissible. Please refer to your child's divisional handbook for rules and expectations of student behavior. Those policies regarding harassment and bullying along with the expectations for student behavior extend to your digital presence in the Durham Academy community and in how you represent yourself and the school online at all times, including while you are away from school.
