PA L M S U N DAY April 13, 2014, 8:15 a.m.

The Liturgy of the Word

As you enter the Sanctuary, please assume a quiet and respectful attitude of worship. Please silence your mobile devices.

PRAYER OF PREPARATION You are invited to pray the following prayer as you prepare for worship. O Lord Jesus Christ, who on this day did enter the rebellious city where You were to die: Enter into our hearts and subdue them wholly to Yourself. And as Your faithful disciples welcomed Your coming and spread their garments in the way covering it with palm branches, make us ready to lay at Your feet all that we have and are and to bless You who comes in the name of the Lord. And grant that after having worshiped You upon earth, may we be among the number of those who shall hail Your eternal triumph and bear in their hands the palms of victory when every knee shall bow before You and every tongue confess that You are Lord to the glory of God the Father. Amen. BRASS PRELUDE: “Toccata” from Suite for Organ and Brass . . . . . . . . . . . Craig Phillips CALL TO WORShIP . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Gerry A. Peak

A great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, “hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” In praise we adore you, King Jesus. Enter our hearts today as you entered Jerusalem long ago, and lead us by faith in the way everlasting. Amen. WPROCESSIONAL hYMN: “All Glory, Laud, and honor” . . . . . . . . . . . . . ST. ThEODULPh

The Liturgy of the Table INVITATION TO ThE TABLE

All those who have publicly professed their faith and joined a Christian church as a communing member are warmly welcomed to receive communion today. Non-communing worshipers are encouraged to contemplate the love of Jesus Christ during this time. At Second Presbyterian, we encourage our children not to take communion until they have joined the church as communicant members. We do, however, encourage non-communing children to come forward with their parents to receive a blessing. Those wishing to be served communion together as a group or family, please stand together in front of the two serving elders before taking the elements. Gluten free communion bread is available upon request from the elder at the east side of the transverse aisle (opposite from the door leading to the Connector).

WPROFESSION OF FAITh . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead;

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. WGLORIA PATRI . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . GREATOREx

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen! CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy Father, long ago the crowds with incessant hallelujahs greeted Your dearly loved Son, but how quickly they mocked as He went lonely to the cross. Forgive us for the ways that we, too, have welcomed Him only in words and resisted His kingship, and set our hearts free to worship and serve You as King now and forevermore. Amen. INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS OF CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF DIVINE PARDON WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION AND ThE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. ShARING ThE BREAD AND ThE CUP

For those unable to come forward for communion, please raise your hand and an elder will serve you in your seat. Throughout this time of communion, we invite you to join in singing the hymns printed in bold below. “Fairest Lord Jesus” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . CRUSADER’S hYMN Reference page 170 in the hymnal for music.

Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature, Son of God and Son of Man! Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor, Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown. Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands, Robed in the blooming garb of spring: Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, Who makes the woeful heart to sing. Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight, And all the twinkling, starry host: Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer Than all the angels heav’n can boast. Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations! Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration, Now and forevermore be Thine.

We consider it a privilege to have our children in worship with us. If your small children become restless and vocal, we invite you to the children’s room especially designed for them at the rear of the Sanctuary. They are also welcome in the nursery. Older children should also be encouraged to come to church prepared to stay in their pew throughout the service.

One of our pastors will be available after the service to pray for you or to offer helpful direction regarding your spiritual life. He will be in the Gathering Room, which is the first room on your left as you exit the southwest door of the Sanctuary (closest to the pulpit). You may also send your confidential email to [email protected] with questions about your spiritual life.

Getting Connected at Second To find out more about who we are and how you can become part of our church community, contact Todd Erickson at (901) 312-9890 or [email protected].

Sunday Night Worship We gather each Sunday at 6:00 p.m. for a service of prayer, praise, and teaching from God’s Word. Our current series, which focuses on the work of the holy Spirit, continues tonight with “The Spirit Guarantees Our Inheritance,” from Ephesians 1:11-14. We invite you to worship with us.

Welcome If you are visiting with us today, we welcome you to Second Presbyterian. Please sign our Friendship Pad, which will be passed during the Greetings time of the service. Our Congregational Communities (CCs), also known as Sunday School classes, offer a wide variety of options for various age groups and stages of life. Visiting a CC is the best way to get to know others and become involved. CCs meet on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. For a full listing of classes, visit 2pc.org/cc.

Weekly Focus on Missions World Missions: Daryl and Marlene Bussert serve with JAARS, Inc., the aviation division of Wycliffe Bible Translators. Daryl’s job as the director of aviation safety is to make sure aircraft are safe for transporting Wycliffe missionaries. This past year, Daryl and his team flew helicopters to Christian schools where Daryl was able to talk with the students about missions and Bible translations in chapel services and classes. They ask we pray for continued discernment and efficiency as they incorporate major changes

resulting from new partnerships, and technological tools that JAARS leadership is putting into place. Mission Memphis: Eikon Ministries was created in 1997 with a vision to transform Memphis’ urban community by building indigenous leaders in the Binghampton neighborhood through evangelism and discipleship. The staff asks that we pray with them about the current search for a staff person and for summer interns. Also, pray that the staff and volunteers will continue to be effective in sharing the Gospel and training future leaders and pray for new opportunities to share Eikon’s vision with those who do not know about the ministry.

Second News Holy Week Resources for Families: Parents are invited to stop by tables outside the East Fellowship hall doors today to pick up materials for families to use during holy Week. Egg Hunt Collection: In preparation for the annual Egg hunt on April 19 at 10 a.m., please bring plastic eggs filled with wrapped candy, small toys, stickers, etc. (no chocolate or peanuts) to drop-off points near the nursery entrance and in the D building by April 16.
