Athens First United Methodist Church

Easter Sunday

April 20, 2014 8:30, 9:45 & 11:00 a.m.

Welcome

We’re glad you’re here! Thank you for joining us today. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804, when our church was formed to minister to the Native American and European settlers in Athens. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.” At Athens First United Methodist, there are many ways to get involved, grow in your faith, and do good in our community. If you are unable to attend worship in person, each Sunday our 11:00 a.m. service is broadcast on WRFC 960 AM, and our 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. services are live-streamed on our website at athensfirstumc.org/webcast.

Nursery

Our nursery is available for infants through four-year-olds on Sundays from 8:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. Nursery is also available on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. The nursery area is located on the first floor of the building, off the Washington Street entrance.

Children

Worship activity bags (age appropriate for all preschool and elementary children) are available every Sunday in the narthex and by the south entrance of the sanctuary. Children’s Church is held for children in kindergarten through second grade and follows the Children’s Message during 11:00 a.m. worship all Sundays except for Communion Sundays.

Sunday School

We offer Sunday School for all ages, kindergarten through adult, each Sunday from 9:45–10:45 a.m. Children’s Sunday School (kindergarten-grade 4) is located on the third floor of the building. Classes for students in grades 5–12 meet on the first floor. For a list of adult Sunday School classes and locations, visit athensfirstumc.org/adultsundayschool.

Connect

If you would like to find out more about our church or are interested in becoming a member, we invite you to attend our Newcomer Orientation every second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. We also encourage you to visit our website, athensfirstumc.org, for information about our ministries, to register for events, and to listen to sermons from our sermon archive. Visit athensfirstumc.org/thesteeple to sign up for our weekly newsletter, the eSteeple. You can also connect with us via social media. Find us @athens_firstumc on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. Our church office is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. If you need assistance, please call 706-543-1442.

THE CHOR A L CA LL TO WORSHIP

“Christ Our Passover” | MacFarlane Sung by the Sanctuary Choir with the Brass Ensemble

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast. Not with old leav’n, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over Him.
For in that He died, He died unto sin once: but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God.
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin:
but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ is risen, is risen from the dead: and become the first fruits of them that slept.
For since by man, for since by man came death: by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
For as in Adam, for as in Adam all die: even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

was raised on the third day, and appeared first to the women, then to Peter and the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the firstborn of all creation, the firstborn from the dead, in whom all things hold together, in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell by the power of the Spirit. Christ is the head of the body, the church, and by the blood of the cross reconciles all things to God. Amen. * THE GLOR I A PATR I

THE OFFERTORY A N THEM

“A Hymn of Resurrection” | Walker Sung by the Sanctuary Choir with the Brass Ensemble

I know that my Redeemer lives, and on the earth again shall stand; I know eternal life He gives, with grace and healing in His hand. I know His promise of rebirth, the word He speaks can never die; Though death shall take my body from the earth, yet I shall see Him by and by. I know my pathway he prepares, for where He is, there I shall be; Abiding faith, for me He cares, and He at last will come for me! I know eternal life He gives. I know the grace and healing in His hand. I know that my Redeemer lives! For here on earth He has come again! My Savior lives again!

* THE SCR IP T UR E R E A DING

Matthew 28:1-10 After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ This is my message for you.” 8 So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” WORSHIP BULLETIN |4

Sunday School Observation: Partners Class

There’s a generational character in the history of Sunday Schools in our church. Often they’re formed when members are embarking on a new phase of life. Such is the Partners class, now about 17 years into their “ journey through life holding each other up in prayers and friendship through times both difficult and joyful.” Comprised largely of couples now in their 40s, many with children, the class ref lects the active life of that age. From a roll of nearly 100, around 30 will attend on any given Sunday. A committee selects the studies and members volunteer to teach, with occasional guest speakers. Recently they have followed the Adult Bible Studies, but when I visited they were enjoying an interesting presentation by a Chick-fil-A manager telling about how his faith inf luences his work. A hospitality committee plans activities such as covered dish luncheons and seasonal parties, welcomes new friends, and shares news (births, deaths, illnesses, etc.) about class members and families. There is an emphasis on prayer and a regular communication with those absent. A visit to this class makes clear the sense of “Partnership” the members have with Christ and with each other. -Bill Simpson
