Worship News: “Because God Loves: We Love Malawi!”

We INVITE all; We GROW in faith; We GO to share God’s love and grace.

April 29 - May 5, 2018

1 John 4:7-21 Civil Rights heroine Ruby Sales has described her spiritual upbringing in the black folk church as vital to her identity, self-worth and care for the world. Scripture and simple songs were placed on her lips as some of her first words and tunes. They are melodies about the power of God’s abiding love in the face of hate, fear and apathy. I am haunted by something she said in an interview with Krista Tippet in the fall of 2016. She said that she is perplexed by how quickly white people judge each other unworthy of redemption. Minority communities, she explained, do not have the luxury of distancing themselves or giving up on one another. Maybe you memorized these verses about love in a Bible school song or heard them read at weddings. Ruby Sales has helped me reimagine this love ballad as an essential ingredient for revealing the kingdom of heaven, wherever hate causes terror, where systems are breaking and when people are separated from God’s grace. It is in these places that the love of God creates new life and hope.

1 John 4:7-21 We love God and others because God first loved us. We cannot say we love God, whom we have not seen, while hating fellow Christians, whom we regularly see. Love toward God is to be matched by love toward others because the essence of God is love

God of love, you sent your Son into the world to set us free from the snares of blame, sin and oppression. Give us courage to see and serve one another with love that comes from you. Amen. Meta Herrick Carlson, ‘08 Bethlehem Lutheran Church Twin Cities/Minnetonka Campus Pastor, Minneapolis, Minn.

Being Good Stewards:

We are excited to introduce another way to be good stewards to our financial and natural resources! Starting July 1, all offering envelopes will be generic. What does this mean for you? First, it means that now is a great time to set-up online giving either by going to the Bethany website or calling Dawn in the office. This will greatly reduce the amount of paper waste each week. If online giving isn’t your thing, generic envelopes will be available for pick-up in the Narthex. Since they no longer have names or dates printed on them, you will be able to write your name and the current date each time you use one. (Your account is based on your name, not your envelope number.) This option saves $1600 from money budgeted for postage and envelope costs as well as a great deal of paper-waste! If neither of these options work for you, please call Dawn in the office to request delivered envelopes by April 30. Thank you for joining us in this effort. Imagine what this small change could mean for the mission that God is calling Bethany to act on!

Noisy Collection

The collection taken April 28-29 will go to the Malawi Permaculture Project.
