Pastors’ Corner Dear Friends: Psalm 133 begins with this verse: How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! That verse (and this Psalm) has been on my mind and in my heart throughout the summer. It is a verse I have committed to memory. Scripture has the power to name and shape our reality. And Scripture has the power to hold out a vision for a hopeful future. This verse does both for me. How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity names the reality I experience in our community of faith. There is a gracious and generous experience of Spirit here that comes from the unity we share in Jesus Christ. With over 2,000 members, visitors, and friends of First Presbyterian Church, we understand unity does not equal uniformity. We wrestle with scripture, we discern God’s calling and work in and among us, we don’t all agree on issues facing church and world, we each value and participate in some ministries more than others. Yet we remember and live into the unity we share as disciples of Jesus Christ. It is good and pleasant.

Sunday Worship August 31, 2014 Scriptures: Exodus 3.1-15, Matthew 16.21-28 9 a.m. Worship (Great Hall) Hymn 405: Praise God for This Holy Ground Hymn 406: We Are Standing on Holy Ground Hymn 411: God Is Here Today Hymn 69: I, the Lord of Sea and Sky 8 a.m. Worship (Chapel); 11 a.m. Worship (Sanctuary) Hymn 405: Praise God for This Holy Ground Hymn 412: God, Reveal Your Presence Hymn 719: Come, Labor On

How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity also holds out a vision for a future that is hopeful. We need that vision held out before us. It can be so easy to become discouraged by the constant bombardment of bad news and discord from around the globe and close to home. Russia and Ukraine. Iraq and Syria. Israel and the Gaza Strip. Ferguson, Missouri. Even churches – in our denomination and other denominations – too often experience discord and disunity. How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! I invite you to commit this verse to memory. I invite you to give thanks for our experience of unity in Jesus Christ. I invite you to pray for this vision becoming reality in the church and world as we continue to be both witness to it and participants in the on-going work of reconciliation as the church of Jesus Christ. God’s Peace to You Home,

Penn Pal Ministry FPC, like the city itself, is a big place with a small town feel. The friendships and character are village-like, while the resources and scope are gloriously big city. She will partner you with a new Pal or two as they come along. In cow country, as Omar Barker says, the “welcome sign is wrote deep in western hearts.” - Jean Bentz
