The Places Beyond the fine dining, unique shopping, and miles of beaches, the small town of Elk Rapids provides a variety of sights and activities for visitors of all ages. The History
The Art
With more than 150 years of history, Elk Rapids is rich with heritage. The Elk Rapids Area Historical Society began preserving the village’s history in the 1970s, and last year they became part of that history. In 2015, the society’s home at the Elk Rapids Area Museum became the fifth historical site in Elk Rapids added to the National Register of Historic Places. Built from locally-manufactured yellow bricks and featuring original stained glass windows from 1902, the museum offers an up-close glimpse into the village’s past.
Tucked in among the trees and scattered along the shoreline, the Walk of Art Sculpture Park brings art and nature together at the Elk Rapids Day Park on South Bayshore Drive. With twenty-nine sculptures in a variety of mediums, the Walk of Art has become a destination that children and adults can’t wait to visit. Admire carved wood statues nestled seamlessly into the woods or play near the family-favorite “Singing Pail of Dreams” on the beach.
Other historic places in Elk Rapids include: • The Historic Elk Rapids Town Hall • The Island House • The Elk Rapids Iron Company historical marker • The Elk Rapids Golf Club Not on the national registry, but worth a visit, is Guntzviller’s Spirit of the Woods museum on US-31. Built over several decades, the dioramas include hand-painted backgrounds for the native Michigan animals featured inside. Follow the tracks on the floor to explore – admire a collection of Native American artifacts, feel the animals’ fur at the touch boards, and learn more about the history of Michigan’s outdoors.
Sculptures rotate in and out, so there’s something new to see every year. With modern facilities, hiking trails, picnic tables, and grills, the Elk Rapids Day Park is the perfect location to spend the day enjoying the beauty of nature and man.
Veteran’s Memorial Park Bring your tennis racket. Pack your swimsuit. Play some basketball. Enjoy the view of Grand Traverse Bay while the kids play in the sand or on the playground. Located just west of the downtown shops and restaurants, Veteran’s Memorial Park is home to many of the village’s summertime events, including the Art Rapids! juried art fair and many Harbor Days activities. With hundreds of square feet of sandy beaches, as well as lush, green grass beneath large shade trees, Veteran’s Memorial Park provides just the right setting for any family-friendly get together.

The People No community could exist – much less thrive – without committed, hard-working people to sustain it. Whether it’s through their businesses, volunteer work, or love of the arts, the people in and around Elk Rapids have spent decades building up and supporting this thriving, welcoming community.
Serving Others Bob and Jan Bassett moved to Elk Rapids in the 1980s. On separate paths at the time, they were drawn to the same thing – a vacation destination that included beautiful, year-round weather and a friendly community. “Northern Michigan, and especially Elk Rapids, is a very friendly town,” said Bob. “As a village, we’re welcoming in our nature. It’s a place where anyone can feel like they’re a real part of the community.” By the time Bob and Jan married in 2003, they were already involved in several organizations, and they continue to volunteer today. Between them, they have been and still are involved in twenty local organizations and government boards. Bob said it was never a question of whether or not he should serve. For him, it was his responsibility to the community he loves. “All communities need people to step up to the plate and serve in a way to benefit others,” he said. “Without involvement of the members of the community, it withers and dies.” Jan echoes Bob’s sentiments, saying why not volunteer? “Being part of community activities is what makes a small town great. There are so many different opportunities to get to know your neighbors, share ideas, and work together.”

Though they’re both now retired and have a blended family of eight kids and twenty-six grandkids, their passion for serving hasn’t faded. If anything, the more Bob and Jan serve with others, the more inspired they become. “I admire the talents of those I work with, as well as those dedicated to getting things done in the areas where I have no creative abilities, like beautification and the arts,” said Jan. “Collaboration and learning from each other makes it fun to get things done.”
Supporting the Arts A downstate native, Sherri DeCamp spent years vacationing in northern Michigan before finally making the move in 1989. A teacher-turned-hotel consultant, she’s also an art enthusiast. Sherri served for nine years on the Traverse Symphony Orchestra board, and spent the past eleven years working with Art Rapids!, a local non-profit dedicated to enhancing the arts and art education in Elk Rapids. Though she’s not an artist herself, Sherri appreciates and understands the value of the arts. “I am an art enthusiast, an art supporter, and an art promoter,” she said. “I believe art makes our world a better place.” To help bring more art to Elk Rapids, Sherri helped create Art Rapids! to see if the village could support a fine art fair. More than a decade later, they’ve not only hosted art fairs annually, they’ve also given $100,000 back to the community through scholarships, grants, art prize money to artists, and free concerts. They also helped launch Antrim County’s only outdoor sculpture park in Elk Rapids.
Steve started in the food industry at fourteen years old. He took twelve years off to serve his country before returning to food service as a general manager for Steak and Shake, then as district manager for Yum Brands food. His experiences prepared him for the business end of running a restaurant, but the people of northern Michigan have surprised him. “I’ve been involved in some big openings in big towns, but I never anticipated the human connection here,” he said. “It’s a warm feeling when you come to a town and people genuinely care about each other, sometimes more than they care about themselves.” Steve loves serving others and helping bring smiles to their faces, but he’s discovered that many of his customers feel the same way towards him. It took less than a month for him to experience the warmth and hospitality of the locals. During their third week in business, a customer brought Steve three hundred spoons – she had to wait for a spoon the week before and thought the restaurant might need them. That level of caring and acceptance surprised him, but it also motivates him daily. “When you’re out and about, people recognize you and stop to tell you about their experiences at the restaurant,” said Steve. “It’s nice knowing that they care enough to stop you. Living in northern Michigan, you don’t own a business, you get absorbed into the community. Many of our customers have become part of our family.”
Art Rapids! is completely run by volunteers like Sherri, and she believes that’s what makes Art Rapids! and Elk Rapids so unique. “We’re a lean, all-volunteer organization with a hard-working, committed board,” she said. “We have tremendous support from the community through donations and volunteers. I am especially proud of the Art Rapids! Walk of Art Sculpture Park because of its unique collaboration with Antrim County.” For Sherri, life in Elk Rapids is about combining natural and man-made beauty in a vibrant, small town environment. “I’m grateful for the work our area conservancies have done in protecting this beautiful place. I’m here for the natural beauty. Of course, the icing on the cake is northern Michigan’s focus on the arts.”
Building a Business When Steve Jones’ son-in-law approached him about a restaurant opportunity in Alden, Steve took the chance to move away from the corporate world in Cincinnati, Ohio. Though he’s spent most of his life working in the food service industry, he wasn’t prepared for the differences between working for a large, national chain and helping launch Mama’s Country Kitchen in Alden and Bellaire.

The Parks
From wetlands to hiking trails to state game areas, there’s no shortage of parks and natural areas to explore in the Chain of Lakes region. Grab your boots and your camera and get back in touch with nature at one of these beautiful locations.
Maple Bay Natural Area Easily identified in the summer by the acres of sunflowers, Maple Bay Natural Area sits just south of Elk Rapids along US-31. A short drive down a gravel path – past the farm house, sugar shack, root cellar, and pole barn – takes you to the end of the agricultural fields and the beginning of the forest. From there, navigate nearly two miles of hiking trails through luscious woodlands and past endangered species habitats on your way to beautiful Grand Traverse Bay.
Petobego Natural Area Located along Angel Road in Whitewater Township, Petobego Natural Area features 250 acres of vibrant habitats. As part of the Tobeco Creek watershed, the natural area includes Petobego Pond and Petobego Marsh, as well as a conifer swamp, northern shrub thicket, agricultural fields, and successional grasslands. Also in the natural area is the Petobego State Game Area, providing a quality hunting experience while preserving nongame wildlife and their habitats.
Grass River Natural Area Founded in the 1960s, the Grass River Natural Area is a haven for wildlife, including many rare and endangered plants and animals. Located midway along the Chain of Lakes, it connects Torch and Clam lakes with Lake Bellaire. Nestled among the lakes, streams, and creeks, Grass River Natural Areas provides a diversity of habitats, including marshy bogs and floating sedges.

For more than six decades, Harbor Days has provided a fun-filled, multi-generational community celebration that champions numerous fundraising opportunities for local service organizations. From August 3-6, 2016, families are invited to enjoy the rich history, picturesque harbor, and friendly community of Elk Rapids.
The Elk Rapids area rocks all summer long with live musical events throughout the region. Dance in the streets or watch the sunset as you enjoy one of the many concerts this year!
Harbor Days kicks off at Wednesday’s Evening on River Street and features popular events like Kids Day, the penny scramble, Zumba in the park, carnival rides, the festival parade, and so much more. The carnival wraps up Saturday night with everyone’s favorite Zambelli International Fireworks over the harbor. This small-town festival is a can’t-miss event for your summer calendar!
Art Rapids! Concert in the Park: Enjoy the beauty of the Walk of Art Sculpture Park surrounded by Mother Nature before settling in to listen to Miriam Pico and David Chown’s unique blend of jazz, pop, and folk. Thursday, July 28, 7 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Day Park Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor presents the Sunday Summer Concert Series: Original songs and rock classics, layered funk, and the rhythm of the islands – the Sunday Summer Concert Series pairs an evening of live music with breathtaking sunsets over Grand Traverse Bay. Grab your paddles and hit the water for a two-day kayak trip through Antrim County, September 16-17, 2016. Explore the beauty of northern Michigan’s small towns and waterways as you travel along a forty-two mile stretch of the Chain of Lakes. Perfect for new and experienced kayakers, you can choose your own adventure and paddle Saturday, Sunday, or both. Start your 7.5-mile trip in Ellsworth on Saturday with a checkpoint in Central Lake. Saturday ends and Sunday begins in Bellaire. The 27-mile stretch to Elk Rapids includes four checkpoints for boaters to stretch their legs or pull out early. The event ends in Elk Rapids with the Final Bash, including live music, great food, and local beer from Short’s Brewing Company.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket and please your senses at these concerts by the bay! Grass River Natural Area: Tickle your ears while you support the Grass River Natural Area, 1,452 acres with more than six miles of shoreline, including two and a half miles on the Grass River. With almost eight miles of trails, the natural area preserves 400 species of plants, 49 species of mammals, and 147 species of birds. Located thirty miles northeast of Elk Rapids on the east side of Torch Lake, Bellaire offers year round activities, fine dining, and one of northern Michigan’s best breweries. Golf at the Farm, take on the Chief, or experience the challenge of the Legend at Shanty Creek. Savor fine dining at the Lakeview Dining Room, enjoy the casual atmosphere at Toonies Fish and Steak House, or admire the view while you dine at the Dockside. Experience the grape life at Torch Lake Cellars, or sample some of the area’s best brews at Short’s Brewing Company, paired perfectly with dinner and live entertainment.
Stop at the Grand Traverse Resort to sample their amenities, including shopping, dining, and spa services, or take a shuttle to Turtle Creek Casino to try your luck at the slots. Enjoy authentic Mexican food at Osorio, grab a scoop of Moomer’s ice cream at Woodland Sweets, then sip a locally brewed beer at Bravo Zulu Brewery, serving drinks while honoring service men and women. Experience music in a new yet historic way at the Music House Museum on US-31.
If you prefer to stay outside, plan a trip to Glacial Hills Pathway and Natural Area, or hike your way through the Grass River Natural Area. Bring your kayak or paddle board to explore one of the many nearby lakes and rivers.

Centrally located along the Chain of Lakes, Bellaire is a quick drive from Elk Rapids. Stay in town to shop and dine or follow your feet and enjoy the great outdoors. Bellaire is perfect for a day trip without leaving the comfort of northern Michigan’s small towns.
Head a few miles east on M-72 to Bates Road, and you’re on your way to one of the country’s premiere equestrian events – the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival. Now an official International Federation of Equestrian Sports event, the show promises to bring in the best riders and horses from around the world. Hosted at the expansive Flintfields, the view is as stunning as the horse show. If you miss the summer horse shows, you can explore the fields every fall during the annual Acme Fall Festival.
Charlevoix
Drive north along US-31 to explore historic Charlevoix, home of the Venetian Festive, the Red Fox Regatta, and the Apple Festival. Surrounded by Lake Charlevoix, Round Lake, and Lake Michigan, Charlevoix’s views provide picturesque backdrops for any special event.
Alden
Drive north around Elk Lake and along the southern shore of Torch Lake to discover one of northern Michigan’s gems. Small but mighty, Alden features an eclectic mix of dining and shopping. Grab your morning coffee at the Muffin Tin, order pizza from the Blue Water Bistro and Pizza, or sit down for dinner and a smile at Mama’s Country Kitchen. Stay out late with friends at the Alden Bar and Grill, conveniently located in the center of town. Stroll the streets and explore the local shops, including Alden’s famous Mill House, Simply Elegant, and Alden Outfitters. With more than a dozen shops offering everything from clothing to yarn to home furnishings to souvenirs, there’s a shop for everyone in downtown Alden.
Add a little magic to your day by visiting Castle Farms, northern Michigan’s only public castle, featuring self-guided tours, a museum, and the largest working outdoor model railroad in Michigan. Then head to the Visitor’s Center to grab a map to Earl Young’s Hobbit Houses. Made mostly of boulders, limestone, and fieldstone from northern Michigan, the one-of-akind architecture can only be found in Charlevoix. Charlevoix is also the only way out to Beaver Island, northern Michigan’s “other” island. Take a flight over or let the ferry shuttle your car across the bay to explore the historic, 13-mile long island, featuring shopping, dining, camping, and more.
When you need a break, walk west until you hit the water, and enjoy the view of Torch Lake. Michigan’s longest inland lake, relax as you admire the clear, turquoise water, and see for yourself why so many people consider it one of the world’s most beautiful lakes. 14
