Email Marketing Tips | Subject Lines Your subject line acts as a first glimpse into the content of your email. The idea is to offer enough intrigue that it encourages the subscriber to open the email. Best practices for subject lines are as follows: 1. Keep it short. 35-50 characters. Anything longer and your subject line may be cut off 2. If you use your company name as the friendly from, don’t include it at the beginning of your subject line. For example “Company Name: New Ways Virtualization is Taking Over Storage” can be shortened to “New Ways Virtualization is Taking Over Storage”. 3. Avoid excessive special characters in your subject lines. Some ISP’s and spam filters see them as associated with spam or junk email. 4. Do not use all CAPS. Some ISP’s and spam filters see them as associated with spam or junk email. 5. Avoid the use of RE: and FW: in your subject lines 6. Create a sense of urgency or loss. “Registration Closes Friday” (however, never put “You Missed Out” or “You Lose” in the subject. Keep it professional). 7. Don’t be generic. Chances are your contact will have 5 other invitations about new product launches, or webinars coming up. Try and stand out from the crowd if possible. 8. Test, test, test. Split A/B test subject lines to see which would be a solid performer. 9. Free Subject line tester http://www.localnews.biz/subjectLine/ValidateSubjectLine.asp.
