Life Group Sermon Study

Follow Me August 30/31, 2014

Break the Ice:

ENGAGE

(The purpose of these first questions is to help your group open up. Please don’t feel like you have to ask each question. Once you feel like the group is ready, move onto the “Inspire” section.)

• Who was the most influential teacher in your life? • What did God teach you during the message this weekend? Did anything in particular stand out? Prayer: Take some time to pray for God to speak to your group through this week’s study. Questions:

IN SP IRE

(Since the group may need time to process each question, don’t let silence scare you. Try to avoid filling the space with unnecessary explanation or moving on from the question too quickly.)

As a group, read these scriptures out loud before you start: John 1:35-50, Matthew 28:19. 1. In John 1:35-50, what motivated the disciples of John to follow Jesus? • What motivated Andrew to tell Simon about Him? • What helped Nathanael overcome his initial skepticism about Jesus?

2. This past weekend, Aaron talked about how Jesus wants us to know Him because He already knows us. • How does this truth impact you? • How can it change your relationship with Jesus?

3. Jesus first words to the disciples were “come and see.” Think back to the beginning of your relationship with Jesus. • What was it about Jesus that caused you to “come and see”? • Describe to the group when you came to see Jesus and what you first saw from Him. • Aaron pointed out that most often, the way to come to know Jesus personally is through the invitation of a friend. Who has been the friend who has influenced, or continues to influence, your relationship with Jesus?

4. Aaron shared that a disciple is someone who makes Jesus his or her highest priority, and all other pursuits are secondary. • What does this look like in today’s culture? • What comes to mind when you think about discipleship? Application:

EQUIP

(These questions will challenge your group members to apply the study to their daily lives. It is highly important that you go over this section with your group each week for the group study to be a success. Set aside 15-20 minutes at the end of your study to go over this section.)

We encourage anyone who is in a Mixed Life Group to separate by gender for this section. When talking about discipleship this weekend, Aaron said, “You are not a disciple until you can say to Him, ‘I will obey You completely. I submit all of my mind, all of my heart, all of my behavior completely to everything You tell me to do, everything in Your Word, regardless of how it seems to sound to me in the moment or whether it looks practical to me or not. I will revolve my life around You.” • Is there anything that’s keeping you from following Jesus in this way? Prayer: Take some time to pray over each group member’s identified action steps and life issues. Equip Your Mind: “And He said to him, ‘Truly truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.’“ (John 1:51, ESV)
