Life Group Sermon Study

God Came Near August 16/17, 2014

Break the Ice:

ENGAGE

(The purpose of these first questions is to help your group open up. Please don’t feel like you have to ask each question. Once you feel like the group is ready, move onto the “Inspire” section.)

• Have you ever had the wrong impression about someone that changed once you got to really know him/her? • Aaron said, “We want every person to know Jesus and then grow in that relationship; it motivates everything we do as a church.” How does this challenge you? • What did God teach you during the message this weekend? Did anything in particular stand out? Prayer: Take some time to pray for God to speak to your group through this week’s study. Questions:

IN SP IRE

(Since the group may need time to process each question, don’t let silence scare you. Try to avoid filling the space with unnecessary explanation or moving on from the question too quickly.)

1. Read John 1:1-9. This past weekend as we started our series, Aaron explained the root of “logos” and its meaning. • Why was it important to the Greeks? How does Jesus being the “logos” impact our culture? In John 1:4-5, Jesus is described as “the light of men.” • Share about a time Jesus has brought some truth and light into an area of your own life.

2. Read 2 Corinthians 4:3-4. • In what ways do you see the “gods of this world” blind the minds of unbelievers? • What were you blinded by before you gave your life to Christ?

3. Read John 1:10-13. • What does it feel like to be called a “child of God”? • How does knowing you are a child of God impact your relationship with Him?

4. Read John 1:14-18. Aaron said, “Christianity is not some sort of mystical experience with God or a set of moral rules and guidelines to live your life better. It’s a relationship based on a communication of truth.” • As a group, come up with ten truths that you already know about Jesus. Which truth resonates most with you? • What needs to take place for you to move your relationship with Christ from stagnant to growing? Is anything stopping you from growing? • Who is Jesus to you? (Have everyone in the group answer this question.) Application:

EQUIP

(These questions will challenge your group members to apply the study to their daily lives. It is highly important that you go over this section with your group each week for the group study to be a success. Set aside 15-20 minutes at the end of your study to go over this section.)

• Is there anyone in your life you need to share Jesus with? How can your life group help you and encourage you to share your faith? Prayer: Take some time to pray over each group member’s identified action steps and life issues. Equip Your Mind: “But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12-13, ESV)
