Life Group Sermon Study

On Money July 12/13, 2014

Break the Ice:

ENGAGE

(The purpose of these first questions is to help your group open up. Please don’t feel like you have to ask each question. Once you feel like the group is ready, move onto the “Inspire” section.)

• What was your first purchase as a young adult? Looking back, would you describe it as wise or unwise? • What challenged you from the sermon this weekend? Prayer: Take some time to pray for God to speak to your group through this week’s study. Questions:

IN SP IRE

(Since the group may need time to process each question, don’t let silence scare you. Try to avoid filling the space with unnecessary explanation or moving on from the question too quickly.)

1. Matt challenged us from the beginning with this question, “Do I possess my money, or does my money possess me?” • How does money possess us? What does that look like? • Do you think the culture we live in plays a part in money owning us or us owning money? Explain.

2. Read 1 Timothy 6:10 and Ecclesiastes 5:10. • What speaks to you from these verses? • What are the “all kinds of evil” that come from loving money? How do cravings lead someone to wander away from his or her faith?

3. Read Proverbs 11:4. • As a follower of Christ with righteousness as our goal, why do we so often sacrifice righteousness for riches? How can we strive for righteousness rather than riches when seeking joy?

Read 1 Timothy 6:17. • Do you consider yourself being “one of the rich” in this present age? Why or why not?

4. Read Proverbs 3:9-10. Matt said, “Generosity is not an action; it’s a condition of the heart after the heart has been transformed by the generosity of the gospel. Christian giving is always a response; the motivation for giving is that we have received.” • When we understand how generous Jesus was and still is, how does that impact our daily lives and our generosity towards others?

Application:

EQUIP

(These questions will challenge your group members to apply the study to their daily lives. It is highly important that you go over this section with your group each week for the group study to be a success. Set aside 15-20 minutes at the end of your study to go over this section.)

This week, the challenge is to allow someone to speak into your life in regards to money. Ask your spouse or a friend to help you answer these questions: • Does my flesh quickly resist what God’s Word says about money? • Is it important to me that I live in a certain area or drive a specific vehicle? • What do I spend my money on? • Where is my intentional giving going? • Do I possess money or does money possess me? Prayer: Take some time to pray over each group member’s identified action steps and life issues. Equip Your Mind: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1, ESV)
