VANGUARD

swan lake Brisbane 22 February – 2 March Adelaide 5 – 11 July

Swan Lake, the world’s most beloved ballet, returns to its roots in a new traditional production by The Australian Ballet. Created especially for our 50th anniversary, and touring Brisbane and Adelaide in 2013, it has everything a good Swan Lake should – a troubled prince, an enchanted swan, a malevolent magician and doomed love. Choreographer Stephen Baynes is renowned for his intense musicality and classical purity. Together with Artistic Director David McAllister and designer Hugh Colman, he presents a ballet of unprecedented magnificence.

DON QUIXOTE Don Quixote is on a quest: to find the idealised beloved of his age-addled dreams. The mettlesome lovers Kitri and Basilio are also on a quest: to end up together, despite Kitri’s father and his plans for her to marry the richest fop in town. Their paths meet; and after a storm, a vision, much high-jinks and a little emotional blackmail, ballet’s funniest happy ending is achieved. Reinvented by Nureyev and with plenty of Petipa pyrotechnics, Don Quixote is a benchmark for dancers.

Each of the choreographers on this triple bill has left their distinctive mark on classical dance. George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments is a work of stark geometries and distinct moods. Jirˇí Kylián brings his customary insight and invention to Bella Figura, with its stunningly theatrical flame-red skirts. Wayne McGregor, resident choreographer of The Royal Ballet, tests the limits of movement in Dyad 1929. These three works by the master innovators present modern ballet at its spectacular best.

How do you make a ballet about Parliament House? Choreographer Garry Stewart will answer the question with his Centenary of Canberra tribute to one of Australia’s greatest monuments, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2013. Mirroring the building process will be the classical showcase Études, which shows the growth of ballet technique from basic barre exercises to the most exuberant of bravura displays. Both works return to basic principles to show the complexity in simplicity; both works will highlight The Australian Ballet’s versatility and pristine technique. GRAEME MURPHY'S

swan lake Melbourne 21 June – 1 July

CINDERELLA Graeme Murphy’s grand vision of the evergreen Swan Lake has become a signature work for the company both locally and internationally. The romance of Odette and Prince Siegfried is updated (and complicated) with reference to a certain British royal love triangle. Legendary designer Kristian Fredrikson’s inspired lightto-dark décor frames Murphy’s choreography, which keeps tradition at its heart while adding his distinctive breathtaking pas de deux. Little wonder that this lavish production garnered standing ovations for every performance on our recent New York tour.

BODYTORQUE.technique In 1836, La Sylphide revolutionised ballet, putting women en pointe and giving audiences their first glimpse of the Romantic ballerina – unattainable and unearthly. The Scottish dreamer James is fascinated by a woodland sprite, and spurns his fiancée to follow her. Intent on capturing the ethereal beauty for his own, he accepts the help of the vengeful witch Madge, who leads him to his downfall. This poignant two-act work will be paired with Petipa’s glittering party piece Paquita, the last flowering of the Romantic ballet and a chance for our dancers to display their sparkling technique.

Could this be your chance to see the next Murphy or McGregor? For almost a decade, the Bodytorque seasons have been a laboratory for our dancers to try out new ideas, discover new skills and let loose to experiment. Fashion, muses, pointe shoes – they’ve all come under the Bodytorque microscope. This year, the theme will be TECHNIQUE. Will we see classical forms bent to new extremes, whole new vocabularies, strange disciplines brought to bear on dance, or something entirely unexpected? Be there as the next generation takes shape. Cinders is getting a brand-new dress! Alexei Ratmansky, formerly artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet and now resident choreographer of American Ballet Theatre, is creating a new version of Cinderella on The Australian Ballet. Set to Prokofiev’s bewitching score and featuring Surrealism-inspired sets and costumes by French designer Jérôme Kaplan, this new Cinderella will be eagerly awaited both here and abroad. Ratmansky has been hailed as the saviour of traditional ballet, injecting fresh life into classical technique, and putting his stamp on iconic works such as The Nutcracker and Don Quixote. His take on the original girl-made-good story promises true enchantment.
