Exhibit features works by 2 New Harmony artists From Local Sources ST. MEINRAD — Saint Meinrad Archabbey Library Gallery is hosting an exhibit by two New Harmony friends and artists, Curt Schmitt and Griffin Norman, from next Thursday through Sept. 30. Schmitt moved to New Harmony in 2006, converting an old barn into a workshop where he designs and builds furniture. Combining art and craft, each piece is both functional and unique. He explains that building a piece of furniture “means discovering just the right balance of materials, purpose and imagination.” Whether inspired by a long-established style or wholly original, the work is rooted in the natural qualities of the wood, seeking a blend of the wood’s organic traits

with functional shape. Schmitt’s work can be seen in homes and businesses in New Harmony, Evansville, Chicago and other places where he has developed friendships with customers who appreciate both the work itself and the process behind it. Norman has lived in New Harmony for more than 10 years. He trained as a graphic designer and worked in the industry for decades. A serious photographer since the 1970s, he chose photos for this exhibit that focus on images he made along a stretch of State Road 66 running through New Harmony. For years, Norman has cycled around New Harmony looking for abandoned objects in the road or on its edge. The objects are photographed in natural light just

Wood furniture pieces like this bench, created by artist Curt Schmitt, can be viewed at the Saint Meinrad Archabbey Library Gallery beginning next Thursday. as they are found. Formerly discarded, the object becomes a treasure within the framework of the photograph.

Current cinema Currently playing Christopher Robin  (Jasper 8 Theatres) In this live-action/CGI combo fairy tale, Winnie the Pooh has lost his friends and the grown-up Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) has lost sight of what’s important and might just lose his family, unless somehow, some way, they can help each other! It’s simple. Sweet. Effective. (Fantasy, PG, 1 hr. 44 min.) The Darkest Minds  From “The Hunger Games” to “Harry Potter,” dystopian young adult science fiction has become a favorite device for unpacking the complexities of the real world. The new film “The Darkest Minds,” based on the novel by Amanda Bracken, written by Chad Hodge, feels like a bit of a late entry, even as it positions itself for sequels. Amandla Stenberg, who broke out in “The Hunger Games,” returns to her dystopian teen roots starring as Ruby, a young girl ripped away from her family as the country is gripped in a crisis after adolescents are wiped out by a lethal disease. The film is lacking so much backstory and never commits to one specific message. It shies away from actually saying anything interesting and stumbles in the execution, privileging a young love story over everything else. Despite its radical potential, it’s disappointing to see this story fall back on what’s considered typical teen stuff. (Fantasy/mystery, PG-13, 1 hr. 45 min.) Hotel Transylvania 3  (Jasper 8 Theatres) “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” picks up with the getaway destination for creatures doing booming business. Things are going so well that a break is needed and the group books passage on the first monster cruise, which will take them from the Bermuda Triangle to the found city of Atlantis. The trip becomes a monster version of “The Love Boat” as Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) does what he has thought was impossible: He falls in love again. The problem is she’s the last in the long line of Van Helsings, who have made it their life’s work to kill Dracula. (Animated, PG, 1 hr. 37 min) Mission Impossible — Fallout ½ (Jasper 8 Theatres) There’s nary a dull moment as Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise, in a big-time movie star performance) races

through the streets of Paris on a motorcycle, jumps from building to building in London and gets mixed up in all manner of close-combat confrontations. Full of double- and triple-crosses, this is one of the most entertaining movies of the summer. (Action, R, 2 hr. 27 min.) The Spy Who Dumped Me  The spurned ex (Mila Kunis) of a secret CIA operative goes on the run with her best friend (Kate McKinnon), pursued by various agents and assassins. There’s so much noise and nonsense in this cheerfully violent action laffer that the two great comic actresses never get the full opportunity to establish chemistry. (Action comedy, R, 1 hr. 53 min.)

On DVD Book Club  Great as it is to see Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen on the big screen, too bad they’re floundering about in this undercooked, silly and often downright inexplicable romantic comedy that plays like lesser Nora Ephron. (Comedy, PG-13, 1 hr. 44 min., 2018) Avengers: Infinity War ½ This massively enjoyable and just plain massive candy-colored thrill ride adventure brings the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy together to help hold off a villain with a richly dramatic background and actual dialogue. It’s the biggest and most ambitious Marvel movie yet, but it’s not the best. (Sci-fi action, PG-13, 2 hrs. 36 min., 2108)
