WELCOME TO

KIDSWORLD! Jesus gave his church a mission -- to go and make disciples. There is no minimum age for that mission to begin. So here at Christ Community and in KidsWorld our mission statement is “to make passionate disciples of Jesus Christ who are belonging, growing, serving and reaching.” By teaching the love of Jesus with our actions and words, we want children to understand how to passionately follow Jesus with all their heart, soul and mind.

Thousands of children across all Christ Community campuses call KidsWorld home. KidsWorld being a great home requires over a thousand people ranging from students, parents, grandparents, and single adults coming together in faithful obedience to the call of God on their own lives. You are answering that call and for that we thank you.

This book will help equip you to have the best experience possible while serving. Serving allows us to meet the real needs of others. Serving also contributes to each of us most fully being who God created us to be doing something for which we are both gifted and passionate. We trust that in the right role with the right training that will be true for you. Thanks again for partnering with us as we partner with families to love and serve the kids God has entrusted to us.

OBSERVATION:

We want you to see first-hand how great serving in EPIC is,

and, most importantly, we want you to find the right place to serve. God has gifted us each uniquely and we want your passions and talents to be used effectively. You will fill out a Visitor Agreement and be issued a Visitor Tag. You may Observe (2) times as a visitor. When you are observing, you are not serving as a volunteer.

CONVERSATION:

We want to get to know you better, and we’d love to answer

your questions about EPIC, serving opportunities or Christ Community. A staff member will be in touch with you after you fill out your application, or you can give any one of us a call to start the conversation!!

APPLICATION:

Submit an Adult or Youth Application. Please make sure you have

answered all the questions, included contact information for your references and signed all appropriate forms. It can take a couple of weeks to process your application. • We will run a background check if you are over 18 years old. • We will check your references. Please let your references know that we will be contacting them.

TRAINING:

A staff member will lead you through this handbook and answer

any questions you might have. You will also be trained for the team you will be serving on, such as Early Childhood, Grade School, Operations or Games. Once you’ve completed training, you will be asked to sign a covenant. It’s a promise we make to you and you make to us.

APPROVAL:

Once we have reviewed your application and received positive

feedback on your background check and references, the staff member you will be serving with will contact you to schedule your first time to serve. Now you can have your picture taken for your name tag.

NAMETAG: You will be receive your nametag and EPIC volunteer t-shirt.

These policies are designed to protect both children and volunteers by not giving opportunities for volunteers to have sustained time alone with a child or student. Every KidsWorld volunteer needs to review and return the questionnaire from the Child Protection Policy in the application.

TWO-PERSON RULE: • There must always be at least two volunteers present when children are in a classroom, being escorted to another location, or using the bathroom. • If there are only two volunteers present, they must not be related and one volunteer must be an adult. (For example, an adult volunteer and their son who is a student volunteer may NOT be the only volunteers in a classroom or handling a bathroom break; two student volunteers may not manage a bathroom break or a classroom without an adult.)

• NEVER allow yourself or another volunteer to be alone with a child, even if it is your own child.

BATHROOM BREAKS: • When taking children to the bathroom, two unrelated volunteers must accompany a child at all times. One volunteer must be an adult. • Check to see if the bathroom is empty before letting children go in. Say “Is anyone in there?” and walk in to verify before allowing children to enter. If the bathroom is not empty, one volunteer must step inside the bathroom and make sure they can see that the children stay safe. • One volunteer must be able to see the other volunteer at all times as well as any children that may be waiting to return to the classroom. • If a child needs assistance, you may help them. Just make sure the other volunteer can see you.

8

• Please remember that even if you are taking your own child/sibling to the bathroom during KidsWorld hours, you need to take another volunteer with you. Consider a parent who may be new to the church and doesn’t know this is your child. They could assume you are taking a child into the bathroom alone — that new parent may see a security breach and never return.

CHILDREN MAY NOT SIT ON YOUR LAP: • Seriously. Please have children sit next to you, even if you are serving with your own child. • Touching should be non-demanding. Gentle touch of shoulders, hands, arms, head or back is OK.

PHOTOS & SOCIAL MEDIA: • Do not take pictures of any children. Names of children are not to be posted or “tagged” in any public or social networking website. • As a representative of KidsWorld, please be especially aware of what you personally post or what may be posted to your social media sites.

REPORTING SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE: • If you suspect that a child has suffered some form of abuse (physical, mental, sexual or neglect), immediately report suspected child abuse to your KidsWorld Staff Leader. Please be prepared to provide: • Names, birthdates, ages, genders, races. • Any other family information that you may know. • Specific

information

about

the

suspected

abusive

incident

or

circumstances contributing to the risk or harm. (For example: When the incident occurred, extent of injuries, how the child says it happened, and any other pertinent information.)

9

• Never prompt a child for a response or ask leading questions. Let the child tell you what happened. • Don’t discuss the information with anyone other than a staff member. Do not promise the child that you won’t tell anyone else.

WHAT ARE CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT? Child abuse is the mistreatment of a child under the age of 18 by a parent, caretaker, someone living in their home or someone who works with or around children. The mistreatment must cause injury or must put the child at risk of physical injury. Child abuse can be physical (such as burns or broken bones), sexual (such as fondling or incest) or emotional. Neglect happens when a parent or responsible caretaker fails to provide adequate supervision, food, clothing, shelter or other basics for a child.

10

11

KidsWorld cannot accept children into a classroom who display any of the following symptoms:

• Fever (in the last 24 hours) • Diarrhea and/or vomiting (in the last 24 hours) • Pink eye or other eye infections (red, crusty, or watery discharge)

• Sore throat • Sneezing or cough, if persistent and/or productive • Colored nasal discharge: white viral infection; yellow or green bacterial infection • Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin) • Any skin infections; sores and/or crusts on the scalp, face or body particularly if red, swollen, draining, or spreading • Skin eruptions or rash (other than diaper rash) • Any communicable diseases (chicken pox, lice, hand foot mouth disease, etc.)

KidsWorld staff and volunteers will not dispense medication to children.

12

13

From time to time, you may have someone visiting your classroom who is not an approved volunteer. Typically, they are observing to see where they want to serve or they are attending church with a friend who is serving; you may also have a parent who wants to see what their child is experiencing in KidsWorld or who isn’t comfortable leaving their child quite yet.

All visitors must go to KidsWorld Central and fill out a Visitor Agreement and receive an ORANGE name tag before coming into a classroom. They must wear this orange name tag at all times.

Please note that vistors are not volunteers, so they may not serve in this capacity. That means they cannot:

• Serve as a second person • Assist with bathroom breaks • Lead or follow-up a line of children that is moving locations • Count kids • Lead a small group • Change diapers

If the visitor is a parent, please remind them that they may not take their own child on a bathroom break. This was explained in the paperwork they signed, but may need to be reinforced by the classroom leader.

GENERAL EMERGENCY PROCEDURES: • Stay calm. You are responsible for the children in your classroom. Remain with those children! Do not attempt to go to another room to get your own children. They will be taken care of by the staff and volunteers assigned to their rooms. • Evacuation maps are located by the exit door in each classroom and in the Attendance & Emergency book located in every classroom. Please become familiar with both the Primary and Alternate Evacuation routes for your classroom. • Each classroom is equipped with an emergency backpack. Please be sure you know where the backpack is located in your room. If you need to evacuate, take the backpack with you. • There should be an adult volunteer leading and a volunteer following the class. Each class is to stay together and move away from the building, being careful to stay out of harm’s way of emergency vehicles. All classes need to evacuate to the designated area on the Evacuation Map posted in their classroom.

FIRE ALARM: • Confirm your evacuation route and meeting area before leaving room. • Count your kids before you leave your room. • Take your room radio, emergency book, and backpack with you. • Proceed to the meeting area marked on your room Evacuation Map located in your room. • Count your kids when you arrive. • If your count does not match, notify staff or Coach on your radio. • Wait for notification from KidsWorld staff to return to building/classroom.

16

EXTREME WEATHER: • The tornado shelter closest to your room is indicated on the Evacuation Map in your room. Please proceed to that area. If you cannot make it to the tornado shelter, find a small interior room of the facility. • Count your kids before you leave your room. • Take your room radio, emergency book, and backpack with you. • Proceed to the meeting area marked on your room Evacuation Map located in your room and in the Emergency book. • Count your kids when you arrive. • If your count does not match, notify staff or Coach on your radio. • Wait for notification from KidsWorld staff to return to the building.

MISSING CHILD (CODE ADAM): • If you suspect a child is missing, notify KidsWorld staff on the radio on the KidsWorld channel immediately. • State: “I need a staff person to come to Room _________. IT IS IMPORTANT.” Do not say that a child is missing; we do not want to panic anyone overhearing the radio. Remain calm; it is important to not upset the children in the classroom. • Search the entire room for the child while waiting. The child may be hiding under a table or play equipment, in the closet or behind I-beams (pods). Send an extra volunteer to double-check other classrooms if the class recently moved locations (the child may have been left behind or exited the room with the grade level above or below). • When staff or a Coach arrives, they will ask questions to help find the child and to determine if we need to call a Code Adam and lockdown the building. Be prepared to give the following: • Name, age and gender of child • Hair and eye color • What they were wearing • Where you last saw them Staff will contact security and alert other staff members, who will proceed to their designated search areas. Security will assist in locating the child and determine if/when law enforcement needs to be called. • Follow the Coach or staff’s instructions.

17

HANDLING INJURIES: • If a child is ill or injured, ask your Room Leader or Coach for assistance. BandAids for minor scrapes are located in your classroom cabinet or closet. • You may be asked to fill out an “ouch” report for a follow-up by KidsWorld staff. If the incident is more serious, a staff member will call for additional medical help or call 911. • Ouch reports are used to inform the parent/guardian about a nose bleed, cut, bruise, bump, bite, etc.

CHILD CHECK-IN & CHECK-OUT: • At check-in, children will be given two identical nametags with an ID number on them. Parents will be issued a pick-up tag with a matching ID number. One nametag goes on the child; the second tag is used for attendance in the classroom. • A child may not be picked up from the room without confirming that the adult has the appropriate matching ID tag. A photo of the tag is acceptable. If a parent has lost or forgotten the tag, send them to the designated location at your campus to have a replacement tag printed. Keep the child in the classroom with you. • NO TAG, NO KID, NO EXCEPTIONS! Even if it is a staff member’s child or if you know the family personally. • If a child has lost their tag, the check-out person or another volunteer will call on the radio and state, “I have a child with a missing tag.” Please do not say “We have a missing child tag.” Do not send the parent to get a replacement tag; they should remain with the child in the room. • The check-out person will be asked for the child’s name and last 4 digits of their phone number. They will then be asked for the pick-up tag number on the parent’s tag. If they match, the child can be released. • Do not release the child unless you are told “That is a match.”

WHAT IS EPIC? An epic is a grand story about a hero with exciting events and adventures. We are walking kids through the grand story of Scripture emphasizing God as the hero of every part, showing how he invites us into his story - his EPIC adventure. After registering for EPIC, every child is placed on a team with kids their same age. Each week, these teams discuss what we’re reading, memorizing, and learning from God’s Word, as well as engaging in worship, hearing biblical truths taught in an age-appropriate way, and playing the best games around!

WHO IS EPIC FOR? EPIC is offered for children in 1st-5th grade. 1st-3rd graders are placed in mixed gender, same age teams, while our 4th-5th graders are placed in gender-specific, same age teams. Each of these teams has 2-3 team leaders, who will lead their team every week through EPIC! For children too young to yet attend EPIC, we offer programming including many of the same components, like games and Bible teaching. This program is offered for 2.5 year old through Kindergarten, and is only available for children of those serving in EPIC or Genesis, our middle school program.

WHEN DOES EPIC HAPPEN? EPIC happens Wednesday nights during the school year (September-April). Each week looks a little different with unique themes, special events or celebrations happening on a regular basis.

The EPIC program is comprised of three components: Large Group, Small Group and Games.

Each age group will rotate through these three areas every week in EPIC, which each area’s activities lasting around 30 minutes each. Follow your provided schedule for which area your team will start and finish in.

Based on the age group you serve with, the components included in the program may differ in content and length. Here is an example of what a typical night at EPIC might look like if you are a Team Leader:

6:30-6:35 6:35-7:05 7:05-7:10 7:10-7:40 7:40-7:45 7:45-8:15

Arrival (Gym) Games Transition Large Group Transition Small Group

The remainder of this handbook is written specifically for EPIC Team Leaders (1st-5th Grade). For other serving areas, please follow the direction of your Coach for the specific schedule and role/responsibilities for your area.

28

29

GAMES Games is a fun, high-energy environment that occurs in the gym. EPIC kids have the chance to play a range of games and compete to earn points for their team throughout the year. Your team will have an assigned area, marked by a cone, where they will sit each week. Up to 4 teams compete against each other at one time under the direction of the Games team. Although the Games Leaders will facilitate explaining and playing the game, your responsibility is to help make sure kids understand what to do and to encourage participation.

KEYS FOR GAMES: • Gym shoes should always be worn. Please remind kids to wear them. • Designate a spot in the gym to have your team place their belongings along the outside wall or near your team area. • Points for winning teams are recorded over the year and the winning team receives a prize at the end of the year. • Listen carefully for instructions. It’s important that you are able to explain the rules of a game to your team. • Get Loud! Once a game has started, cheer on your team and get engaged in what’s going on! It makes a difference for kids to see their leaders engaged.

At the end of Games, you will either line up your team to exit to their next area, or prepare your team for check-out. Your age group’s schedule will determine which this will be. If your team is transitioning to another area: • Have the team line up on your Games line and do a head count. • Transition to your next area, with one leader at the head of the line and one at the back. If your team will be checking out: • Ensure kids stay seated on the Games line for your team. This is important so that parents can easily find their child. • Wait with your team while parents enter the gym for check-out. Direct parents to the marked check-out exit. • This is not bonus game time. It is important that you make sure your team stays together in the designated area. 30

LARGE GROUP Large Group takes place in the KidsWorld Theatre and consists primarily of high-energy worship and practical, relevant teaching. Throughout the year, we also have special focuses and themes. When you arrive in the Theater, your team will have a designated location to sit. Direct your team to their location and have them seated ready for large group to being. Bathroom or water breaks should happen before entering the Theater whenever possible.

KEYS FOR LARGE GROUP • Please keep kids from sitting on the back wall in the Theatre • Kids should be seated, except when otherwise directed. • Split up leaders throughout your team. Doing so helps to minimize distractions and means you’re close at hand if a child needs assistance. • Here’s an example of a good way to help manage your team in large group (with leaders being X’s and kids being O’s) OOOXOOOXOOOXOOO

OR

OOOXOOOOOOXOOO

BUT NOT THIS: XOOOOOOOOOOOOOOX • Please help kids to be attentive during teaching and worship • Set the example of engagement yourself by participating as much and as often as possible in what’s happening. • Avoid bathroom breaks during Large Group - we want kids to hear God’s Word taught. EPIC Large Group for all ages typically includes worship through songs and biblical teaching related to what kids have been reading in their EPIC reading plan and journals. When your team is transitioning to another area: • Have your team line up when dismissed and walk to your next assigned location.

When your team is arriving (Large Group is first on your schedule): • Have kids take a seat. Engage them by asking about their week and using this opportunity to hear about their lives.

31

SMALL GROUP Small groups are the heart of relationship building and shepherding at EPIC. A typical night of small group will include: • EPIC Journal Check-In • Group discussion/activity tied to our large group lesson • Prayer • Announcements & Reminders You will be provided with a small group lesson guide weekly. This will outline the topic for the night, provide questions to engage your small group, list important announcements and help as a guide for your time with your group. Please note that this document is intended as a guide only. We rely on your judgement in determining when things may need to be altered or changed to ensure the keys areas of journal check-in, group discussion and prayer can happen.

KEYS FOR SMALL GROUPS • Establish clear boundaries during your first small group in regards to listening, who can talk and when, time limits, discussion, role responsibilities and boundaries of space • If helpful, assign a few kids with specific roles or tasks (such as handing out materials or asking the next question) • Handing out materials • Promote interaction by arranging your group in a circle and awat from distractions • Encourage kids to listen and respect the opinions of others • Praise teamwork and cooperation • Facilitate conversation during small group time. Our primary teaching occurs in large group, so small group should focus on listening to kids respond. If your team is transitioning to another area: • Have the team line up on your Games line and do a head count. • Transition to your next area, with one leader at the head of the line and one at the back. If your team will be checking out: • Ensure kids stay with your group until picked up by parents in the room.

32

EFFECTIVE DISCIPLINE - A TEAM EFFORT Clear rules, expectations and consistent messages about behavior are the key to effective discipline procedures. Occasionally, children have trouble following the rules or display disruptive behavior. When this happens, it is important for all our volunteers to be consistent when managing behaviors and establishing expectations.

THE EXPECTATIONS ARE: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. Respect others Listen and follow directions the first time. Take care of the property around you. Participate in all activities.

Regardless of your serving role at EPIC, be a part of ensuring a safe, fun environment by helping guide kids to meet these expectations. Covering these expectations early in the EPIC year (for the first few weeks of small group) are crucial in setting a good tone for your small group. Don’t neglect this very important practice.

KEYS TO HANDLING DISCIPLINE ISSUES Handle all discipline issues quietly and efficiently. Most situations of not following the rules or disruptive behavior can be handled with simple redirection. Talk with the child and state clearly what the problem behavior is and what the child should do instead. Keep words to a minimum, but be direct.

a. b. c. d.

You may need to take a seat next to a child who is acting out or disengaged from the group. Eye contact with the child may be enough to bring peace. A gentle touch on the shoulder may be all that is needed. You may need to move the child from the group.

If the problem continues, give a warning to the child and seek out additional assistance from a coach or the EPIC Director.

33

ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL PROCEDURES Arrival and dismissal are wonderful opportunities to spend time connecting relationally with your team. Ask kids how their week was, follow up on prayer requests from a prior week, and generally utilize this time for building strong relationships with the children on your team.

ARRIVAL LOCATIONS: KIDSWORLD THEATER AND TEAM ROOMS During arrival, each child should be wearing a name tag and provide you with a duplicate. This duplicate tag should be placed in your team binder. Ensure kids are engaged right away upon arrival.

DISMISSAL LOCATIONS: GYM AND TEAM ROOMS During dismissal, remain in location for 10 minutes after the program end time. After that time, all 1st-5th graders should be escorted to the KidsWorld Theater. If you have a child in KidZone, Younger/Older Preschool, or Pre-K/K, please plan to pick-up your child by 8:30PM.

TEAM BINDERS & BINS Each team will be provided a binder that contains emergency information, a team roster and a blank name tag sheet. Your binder should be carried, by a team leader, throughout the night.

BINDERS: • Should be used as a tool for emergency situations and should be ready to go at any given time. • Should have one designated team leader in charge of it each week. • Will be cleaned out after the end of each week and reset for the next week. • Will have a team roster in the front for your reference. Each team will also be provided a team bin. This will be ready for you each week in your team room and contain small group guides, pens, and other needed supplies.

BINS: • Can be found in your team room and do not need to be carried throughout the night. • Should be returned to the rolling shelves after small group near KidsWorld Central.

34
