*CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:

On this day, Christ gathered with His disciples in the upper room.

People:

Jesus said: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. And love your neighbor as yourself.

Leader:

On this day, Christ took a towel and washed the disciples’ feet, giving us an example that we should do to others as He has done to us.

People:

Jesus said: I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

Leader:

On this day, Christ our God gave us this holy feast, that we who eat this bread and drink this cup may experience His presence, proclaim His holy sacrifice, be partakers of His resurrection, and at the last day may reign with Him in heaven.

People:

Jesus said: This is my commandment, that you love another as I have loved you. No one has a greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I am giving you these commands so that you may love another.

Leader:

On this day, Christ the Lamb of God gave Himself into the hands of those who would slay Him.

People:

Let us be with Christ this night.

*OPENING HYMN 106

Alleluia, Alleluia! Give Thanks

*CALL AND PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Leader:

The proof of God’s amazing love is this: while we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in Him, we dare to approach God with confidence. In faith and penitence let us confess our sin before God and one another.

ALLELUIA

All:

Eternal God, whose covenant with us is never broken, we confess that we fail to fulfill Your will. We have not always loved the Lord our God with all of our heart and soul and mind. We have not always loved one another as You have loved us. And we have not always loved our neighbor as ourselves. On this holy night, in Your mercy, forgive and cleanse us. Lead us once again to Your table and unite us to Christ, who is the bread of life and the vine from which we grow in grace. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader:

Jesus Christ has poured Himself out for us in love. Our sins are forgiven.

People:

Let us live as those who have died and been brought back to life. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*THE PEACE

Leader:

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Please take a moment and share Christ’s peace with one another.

People to one another: The peace of Christ be with you.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD FOOT WASHING

Although the task of foot washing was typically the job of a servant, Jesus took the role of the servant and washed the feet of His disciples at the Last Supper. This evening, you may come forward and have your feet washed and in turn wash the feet of those behind you, by pouring water over their feet and drying them. “O Rest in the Lord” from Elijah Phillip Hill, mezzo-soprano

WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE, closing with THE LORD’S PRAYER DISTRIBUTION OF BREAD AND WINE

(To receive the bread and the cup – process down the center aisle, take a piece of bread; dip the bread in the cup, and return to your pew by the outside aisles. If for any reason you prefer not to come forward, please raise your hand and the Elders will be glad to serve you in your pew. If you would like gluten free elements, please go to the server nearest the pulpit side and indicate your preference to the Elder.)

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (Unison)

God of grace, Your Son Jesus Christ left us this holy meal of bread and wine in which we share His body and blood. May we who have celebrated this sign of His great love show in our lives the fruits of His redemption; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

SCRIPTURE READING OF CHRIST’S PASSION AND THE STRIPPING OF THE CHURCH

from Matthew 23-24

Reflecting the death of Christ and His placement in the tomb, the Chancel will be stripped of its elements. (Please exit the sanctuary in silence and gather around the cross in front of the sanctuary for our closing prayer.) The entire offering tonight will go to the One Great Hour of Sharing, a Presbyterian and ecumenical response toward alleviating hunger, providing medical care, and reaching out to victims of disasters and wars. *Those who are able, please stand.

EASTER SUNDAY SERVICES, APRIL 1 8:30am Early Easter Worship Service (Sanctuary) 10:30am Easter Worship Service (Sanctuary) SELWYN AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WARMLY WELCOMES ALL WHO VISIT Please take a moment to sign the registry of friendship as it is passed along your pew so that you may be greeted and greet others by name. If you are actively searching for a new church home, we invite you to fill out the card in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate, or bring it after worship to one of the ministers. Membership is by one of three paths: 1) profession of faith in Jesus Christ (for those who have never been part of a Christian church); 2) reaffirmation of faith (for those who formerly were part of a congregation but have not been involved in recent times - for example, you were baptized and/or confirmed but moved away for military service, education, or work, and never engaged with a new congregation); or 3) transfer of membership from another congregation (you have recently moved to this area and your membership is still elsewhere, or you simply seek to become part of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church in your faith journey). New members and prospective members are invited to participate in Orientation Conversations, which are scheduled several times a year, and are a wonderful way to meet others and learn together about all the opportunities here. We always stand ready to be in communication with you about your particular situation. The contact information for all staff members is in the bulletin each week.
