Facebook for Business - Made Easy This month’s Technology Education Workshop will be held on Thursday, November 29, from 5:308:30pm in the Blinn Student Center-Conference Room. The Washington County Chamber will be hosting this hands-on social media training class for local businesses, designed for the beginner to intermediate user. Learn how to create a Facebook page for your business, get insider tips and tricks on managing your page more effectively, and discover the advantages of Facebook’s new “Timeline” and

how it can help your business. At this workshop, we will demonstrate LIVE how to create a Facebook page for your business and how to use it properly. This is a hands-on, step-by-step training on how to use Facebook for Business. We will also talk about the different ways to track and effectively use paid advertising on Facebook. You will need to bring: a laptop with power cord, and an email address you can access from anywhere (Gmail,

Maximize Your Presence Online Statistics indicate that people searching the internet are experienced, educated consumers who use the web to help make purchase decisions. An estimated 82% of American adults use the internet and 78% of those users are looking for information about a product/service while online (according to PEW Research 2012). People visiting the Chamber website are making decisions about where to do business specifically in this community. Are you reaching this targeted market? Many members realize the benefit of membership and the value of targeting the market already driven to the Chamber’s online Business Directory. It is about utilizing the web and the Chamber’s credibility to promote your business. We have asked Suzanne Johnson, Internet Marketing Consultant from ChamberMaster (our software & marketing partner), to return to Brenham in December to help members promote their local businesses to the targeted, potential consumers using the Chamber’s website. We will hold a couple of member sessions at the Chamber to present upgrade opportunities (from the listings all members automatically receive included with dues), such as the ability to display a logo in the online Business Directory, how to increase visibility of your own website link, and provide

enhancements that give a more professional first impression. How to gain additional, exclusive exposure to the Chamber website traffic is something that will also be discussed. At the member sessions, a free Basic Listing tutorial will be given. Did you know that your FREE listing on the Chamber’s online Business Directory includes the following: • A 200-character business description • Your hours of operation • Driving directions • Personalized keywords • Free online job postings • Free online “Hot Deal” promotions • The ability to update the Chamber’s database if your information changes without having to call or email the Chamber office You should check to see how your listing is showing up right now. The basic free listing requires your attention to update your business description, 8 key word/search terms, hours of operation, etc. to maximize your presence and searchability. Be watching your email in-box for more details on how to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Suzanne Johnson from Chambermaster. If you would like to get on the list to be among the firsts contacted, please send an email to [email protected].

Yahoo, etc.). Have on your computer a logo and/or photo to represent your business on Facebook, so that you can work on your page during this session. The registration cost is $28 for Washington County Chamber members ($38 for nonmembers). This includes a box dinner meal, served during the workshop. Workshop presenters are Page Michel from the Brenham/Washington County ChamberCVB and Liz Hopkins from Stella Designs & Solutions. Seating is limited, so reserve your seat now! You wont want to miss this informative workshop. Please call (979) 836-3695 or send an email to [email protected] to reserve your seat. Leadership Explores the History of Washington County The October session of Leadership took the group back in time in Washington County. The day was planned and facilitated by James Pharaon (LWC class of 2011) and Page Michel (LWC Class of 2006). The day started at the Washington County Courthouse with County Clerk Beth Rothermel. She showed the class the lower floor of the courthouse that is filled with hundreds of years of history, with land deeds, marriage licenses, and birth certificates dating back to the 1800s. Next was an informative tour of the Texas Cotton Gin & Museum in Burton. The class had the opportunity to peruse the museum artifacts and watch a movie about the

1914 gin and the ginning process with Museum Director Linda Russell. Linda even gave the class a hands-on demonstration on how cotton is ginned using a small replica of Eli Whitney’s original gin. Museum Assistant Jerry Moore gave the class an upclose and personal tour of the gin. Once a year, the 1925 Bessimer Type IV engine gets fired up to gin and bale cotton during the Cotton Gin Festival in April. After learning all about cotton, the class headed down the hill to tour the Burton Railroad Depot. The depot transports visitors to 1870 when Burton was a terminal on the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. The afternoon portion of the day started

with a tour of the Independence Visitor Center. The class headed “back to school” as they sat in the Mound Hill Schoolhouse listening to tour guide Lanella Gray. They also watched a movie about John P. Coles, one of the “Old Three Hundred” settlers in Texas and first President of the Republic of Texas. The class toured the Coles’ home and a historic log cabin before ending the tour in the oldest continually operating Baptist church in Texas, Independence Baptist Church. This is where Sam Houston and his family were members. No tour is complete without seeing Sam Houston’s carvings on the back of one of the pews. The class browsed the Texas Baptist Museum,

home to hundreds of artifacts including John P. Coles’ writing desk, before heading back to Brenham. History Day in Washington County Leadership ended at Downtown Brenham’s Fire Museum. Firefighter Tank Nienstedt gave an explanation of the fire trucks in the museum and allowed the class time to browse among the displays. The next Leadership session will be focused on Law Enforcement, always one of the most popular sessions of the year. For more information about the Leadership program, visit the Chamber website at www.BrenhamTexas.com or call the Chamber office at 979-836-3695.
