Education for Ministry (EFM)

Two and Three-Year-Olds

The most comprehensive adult education offering in the Episcopal Church, EFM involves four years of study of the Old and New Testament, church history, and Christian theology. Visit www.texas-efm.org for more information.

Contact: KariAnn Lessner at 713-590-3323 10–11 a.m., Jones Building, ground level, room 102 SPARK lectionary-based curriculum is used in the Childcare Center classroom, helping our youngest learners experience church as a nurturing, caring place. Before/Aftercare sessions reinforce the lectionary-based lesson through music, art, and play.

Three-Year-Olds through First Grade 10–11 a.m., Jones Building, second floor (hallway closest to San Jacinto) Cathedral Godly Play curriculum is used as a foundation for our early learners. Each week, a biblical story is shared in community with an opportunity to respond individually through art materials or story manipulatives.

In the Midst of the City (Sept. 23) Dean Barkley Thompson will discuss his new book, In the Midst of the City: The Gospel and God’s Politics. Hispanic/Latino Heritage (Sept. 30) As the Cathedral kicks off Latino/Hispanic Heritage Month, join Canon Simón Bautista Betances and a special guest for a look into the histories and heritages that make up this invaluable part of our community. God in Southern Literature (Oct. 7, 14, 21, and Nov. 4) Dean Thompson will explore our relationship to God in literature by leading us through works of great Southern writers Flannery O’Connor, and Wendell Berry. A Celebration of 25 Years (Nov. 18) In celebration of Canon for Music Robert L. Simpson’s 25th anniversary with the cathedral, Dean Thompson will interview Bob about his experiences over the years. Bishop Andy Doyle (Dec. 2) Join Bishop Doyle for an insightful teaching during his annual fall visit to the cathedral. Martha Serpas on Loss and Healing (Dec. 9) Renowned poet and hospital chaplain Martha Serpas will discuss how, within grief and loss, she finds deeper meaning in faith, humanity, and the celebration of life. The Very Rev. Tracy Lind on Dementia (Dec. 16) Join the recently retired Dean of Cleveland’s Trinity Cathedral for a candid conversation about the experience and spirituality of dementia. The 12 Days of Christmas (Dec. 23) Many have speculated on the origins of the traditional song “The 12 Days of Christmas,” but few, if any, have ever turned it into a game. Join Canon Callaham and his merry group of roustabouts for a holiday-themed exploration of this time-honored tradition.

Christian Meditation 10–11 a.m., Bride’s Room Learn and practice a form of prayer taught by Jesus. This class, open to all, includes teaching, meditation, scripture, and prayer.

The Anglican Way 6–7:30 p.m., McGehee Conference Room Led by Dean Barkley Thompson, this evening class is intended for those who wish to deepen their understanding of the Church, its faith, and its mission. Those new to the congregation and those adults seeking to be baptized, confirmed, or received are especially encouraged to attend. (Meets Sept. 16, 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21, Nov. 4, 18. Childcare is available.)

Theology Roundtable

Second through Fifth Grade 10–11 a.m., Jones Building, second floor (hallway closest to Fannin) Our older elementary learners deepen their spirituality through the SPARK Rotation curriculum, where they are invited to explore the same biblical story over multiple weeks through a variety of sensory workshops: art, science, bible knowledge, games, cooking, videos, drama, and more.

The Lighthouse Classroom 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., by appointment, Jones Building basement Children with special needs are invited to learn and worship in a safe and welcoming place with their express learning needs in mind.

Niños 1–2:15 p.m., Meet in the Cathedral Young children (ages 3–6) explore the history of our salvation through the interactive curriculum Godly Play. Older children (ages 7–11) learn the key stories of the Old Testament.

Sunday School 10–11 a.m., Ballard Youth Center (Treehouse) Youth come together as a community and grow in their faith through teaching, discussion, and doughnuts.

Seed and Root Groups Weeknights, coming this fall Seed and Root Groups give youth a chance to meet in small groups in their neighborhood for fellowship and Bible study.

Latino/Hispanic Ministry Sunday School 2:30–3:30 p.m., Ballard Youth Center (Treehouse) Sunday school (grades 9–12) is an opportunity for young people to ask the big questions and explore the richness of our faith in a safe and fun context. (in English)

More Holy Mysteries 6:30–8 p.m., McGehee Conference Room The Vicar leads readers into the fictional lives of Anglican/ Episcopal clerics who moonlight as detectives. This year we will focus on the American Experience. (Meets Dec. 9 and 16)

Cathedral 20s & 30s offers opportunities for young adults to explore ways to integrate their faith and life experiences in the context of a supportive community. This ministry strives to connect Episcopal young adults throughout the Houston area and to offer programs that equip them for ministry in their respective parishes through fellowship, faith formation, service, and fun.

The Dean’s Book Club Wednesdays once per month, 6:30–8 p.m., McGehee Conference Room This group discusses a different book each month, including novels, nonfiction, and books on spirituality and faith. Branch Out Thursdays, various times and locations throughout Houston During the school year, Jeremy Bradley and Christy Orman visit youth at area middle schools and high schools for lunch, extracurricular events, or a quick visit.

Bible and Study Groups Bible “By the Glass” Mondays, 6:30–8 p.m., OKRA Charity Saloon, 924 Congress Tuesdays, 7–8:30 p.m., Brixology in The Vintage, 110 Vintage Park (Louetta and 249) These casual groups convene for Bible study and fellowship both downtown and in northwest Houston.

Gospel Parallels Tuesdays, 7–8:15 a.m., Mellinger Room Thursdays, 12–1 p.m., Mellinger Room Join Canon Callaham for an exploration of the various way in which each of the four Gospel writers tell his own, unique story about Jesus. The same course material each week will be presented on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Women’s Morning Bible Study Wednesdays, 9:30–11 a.m., Jeffers Conference Room Gather for sincere and truthful conversation on the appointed scripture readings for the following Sunday. Journals are encouraged.

Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and biographer Ron Chernow will read from his newest presidential biography, Grant. He is also the author of Alexander Hamilton and Washington: A Life, as well as several other books on titans of business and finance.

The Very Rev. Tracey Lind, retired dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (Cleveland), will speak on the spiritual insights and lessons she has gained from a life complicated by dementia. She was diagnosed in 2016 with the early stages of Frontotemporal Degeneration.
