Farmers, artisans on deck

This Saturday marks the first week for Elkhart Lake’s market By Mike Mathes

for the Depot Dispatch

Elkhart Lake’s village square is about to come alive for summer Saturdays, as one of Wisconsin’s favorite farmers and artisans markets opens for yet another season. The ever-popular Saturday morning marketplace brings a buzz to the heart of the village as farmers, artists, craftspeople and food vendors bring their wares to for customers to peruse and purchase. What originated as a true farmer’s produce market some 30 years ago has aged and morphed beautifully over the years into a major weekly event through the summer month’s in Elkhart Lake’s biggest tourist season. Residents and visitors alike turn out weekly to see what offerings they can find. Jan Wall is credited with starting that original farmer’s back in the late 1980s. The Saturday mornings largely featured produce on the walkways surrounding the restored Elkhart Lake train depot. In thirty years, the marketplace has added all sorts of vendors, expanding to fill the village square parking lot, and flowing over onto Rhine Street and a nearby small park area. Fresh vegetables and produce remain a key part of the farmers and artisans market in season, but visitors will find a lot more these days. Early demonstrator

Jan Drees has been connected with the Elkhart Lake Farmers and Artisans Market for most of the 30 years. “I started as a demonstrator. In those days we were just up on the platform with a little spill over into the grass,” Drees said. In 1998 her business, Drees Woodcarving, partnered with the store owner in the depot, and it was a natural thing for Drees to assume some of the leadership of the farmer’s market. By 1999, Wall was ready to step down from running the market. “As long as I was there, I started running it for Jan (Wall),” Drees said. Drees recalls that Diane Hameister approached her to consider adding a flea market and art in the park area. “We decided not to go with the flea market, but really liked the idea of vintage antiques,” she added. As the additional vendors set up in the park, they soon migrated to the parking lot near the depot, and the whole event began to grow in size. “I actually resigned a couple of times. At that time, the Chamber wasn’t really all that involved. They didn’t have to do much but manage the money. No one seemed to realize how big it was getting,” Drees said. Turn to

Sharing our Journeys By Carol Edler Baumann

with contributions from Richard Baumann

A Salute to Summer

Well, this is what we’ve been waiting for, warm weather, green grass, beautiful trees and flowers. The bratwurst-frying season began a few weeks ago so now added to that is a whole agenda of outdoor activities. Take your pick. I won’t be burning up the highway on a Harley or attending a louder-than-loud concert with half naked kids dancing to the music of some rock band. Don’t get me wrong—at the right age in life those are things one does. As for me and perhaps lots of other folks summer is enjoyed at a much slower pace. There are church picnics where the men gravitate to the beer stand, kids play on the swings and the ladies chat and gossip and everyone has brats or burgers or chicken or whatever. Flea markets are fun even if one isn’t in “the market” for a particular thing. Just browsing and expressing amazement at the prices of antiques which are the same as one has at home and have been using daily—you mutter, “I never thought that ole’ thing was worth that much money!” Scattered throughout the summer are Plymouth Mill Street Days (imagine the whole downtown road is closed off and lined with vendors selling jewelry, hand knits, stone sculptures, etc., etc.) Farmers markets abound—every Saturday morning at Elkhart Lake, Wednesdays and Saturdays at Sheboygan Fountain Park and also at lots of other nearby towns. Early summer brings the flowers and mid to late summer bring forth all those luscious fruits and vegetables. Sandwiched in is the Wisconsin State Fair and numerous County Fairs—my kids always liked to see the rabbits in the

agricultural barns and the thrill rides on the Midway. Lots of nostalgia and maybe a bit too much small town Americana but I saved the best—perhaps I should say ‘My Favorite’—the Plymouth Band Concerts at the Plymouth City Park. My dad played cornet as a young man and entertained at country dances at Cascade, Batavia and Adell. He also played in the Plymouth City Band during the summer months. My dad thought it was good for a kid to learn to play a musical instrument so both my brother and I had to learn to play the cornet. About that time most cornets were replaced by the trumpet. Brother Bill was good—he could even double and triple tongue, which is quite a feat. I could barely even keep up with the marches of John Phillip Sousa! I persuaded my dad to let me quit the high school band because my “B” grades were pulling down my report card. Not a good reason but it worked. I did continue on in the city band for a short while because I enjoyed the whole ambience of the outdoor setting. Husband Richard and I still enjoy the Thursday night Plymouth City Park band concerts—we eat a brat but he especially likes the healthy size homemade cake desserts the ladies of the sponsoring church bring in. We always remember to bring our folding lawn chairs— the park benches aren’t designed for sitting too long. Living in Elkhart Lake we also get to hear the concerts that the various resorts have in summer—blocks and blocks away from our home but the sounds travel just perfectly to our house and we don’t even have to bring a lawn chair.

Wine a key focus at Lake Street Cafe By Mike Mathes

for the Depot Dispatch

You don’t have to look far to find one of the premier wine establishments in Wisconsin, of the United States for that matter. Situated in the heart of Elkhart Lake, the Lake Street Cafe has placed its claim on Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence. They are only one of four in Wisconsin and among 1,200 so designated in the US. Now celebrating its 20th year in the village square, Lake Street Cafe continues to live up to its original goal of building a top accredited wine list for its customers to enjoy. “From the time we started serving wine, achieving a Wine Spectator accredited list was one of our goals,” said owner Lynn Shovan. “We received the award of excellence every year from 2003 through 2016. In 2016, we earned our first Best of Excellence ranking, and we have carried that through.” Accolades such as this require Lake Street Cafe to submit and maintain an overall wine list with an appropriate variety and inventory of wines from all over the world. “We have to submit our list every year, along with our menu to determine if we qualify,” Shovan said. While the award is a true feather in the hat for Lake Street Cafe, the proof of their selection is in the enjoyment. Lake Street Cafe invites its customers to come for great food and an opportunity to enjoy a taste of their great selections. With more than 600 varieties on the list, Lake Street Cafe’s list appeals to all wine tastes. “We have about 40 different wines available by the glass,” Shovan noted. “They range from a nice wine to accompany a sandwich or a meal, to our dessert wines.” The goal at Lake Street Cafe is to make wine accessible for all tastes. “We strive to offer really good wine at reasonable prices,” Shovan said.

Whether in its formal dining room or its casual bar and dining area, Lake Street Cafe adds a gourmet touch to all its food offerings. In addition to sandwiches, salads and pizzas, Lake Street also has a formal entree menu, featuring its well-known tenderloin shiraz at the top of the list.

Looking back

Lake Street Cafe has been a fixture of the dining and hospitality culture in downtown Elkhart Lake since 1999. Lynn and John Shovan purchased the former corner bar property in June of that year. “We wondered what the heck we were going to do. We knew we wanted a smaller, more quaint dining room,” she said. They picked the corner bar portion of the building at that time (dating back to 1914) and turned it into the formal dining room. But, they also decided to keep the bar on the other side and offer more casual dining on the south side of their building. “At the time, there wasn’t really a more formal dining room in town. That’s what helped us decide to go that route. But we also wanted to be casual,” she said. “To this day, we have customers that have never stepped foot in our formal dining room. They seem to enjoy the fun and the louder atmosphere on the casual side,” she said.

Gourmet slant

Albeit a casual environment, the menu at Lake Street Cafe has serious gourmet overtones. “We feature sandwiches with a gourmet flair. Everything is made from scratch and we use all fresh ingredients,” Shovan said. That applies not only to sandwiches, but to salads and wood-fired pizzas as well.

A traditional hamburger was added to the menu only as an afterthought, once the owners felt they needed to provide for the families that were frequenting their business. “Our menu has changed over the years—and it’s all been due to the wishes of our customers,” Shovan said. For evening dining, Lake Street Cafe also offers a more formal entree-based menu. Topping the list of entrees is the highly-acclaimed tenderloin shiraz, which has become a crowd favorite. Customers can have a choice of either menu. “For the longest time, we have offered both menus in both of our dining rooms. It’s all about keeping things flexible for our customers,” she said. “Early on we saw how many sandwiches and salads we were selling in the evenings, and we knew it would be

silly to limit our offerings to one menu,” Shovan added.

Connected to community

Lake Street Cafe remains connected to the Elkhart Lake community on many levels. “It’s a phenomenal asset for us to be located right in the heart and soul of the village,” Shovan said. “We are within walking distance of the resorts and any activities going on at the lake.” Some of the village’s biggest events occur right on the street in front of the restaurant—like Downtown Night and the Road America Vintage Race weekend concours. For 14 years, Lake Street Cafe also served as the site for a local acoustic music festival. “We like to be involved in everything

that goes on in the community,” Shovan said. A great believer in the power of community Shovan speaks highly of the way her neighboring business owners have formed a network of support for each other. “I just love the way all the businesses here get along and support each other. It’s a great community for a business owner to be part of.” Shovan, in return, has also shown her support for the community. An active participant in the Elkhart Lake Chamber of Commerce, she has served on the chamber board. A member of the Midwest Council for Children with Disabilities, Shovan has also spearheaded the Top Chef Elkhart Lake fundraiser for the past 10 years.

Weather event affects lake quality On March 14, Elkhart Lake experienced an unusual event that could have longerterm impacts on the water quality in the lake. Weather conditions quickly changed a full snow cover in the watershed area into a massive water run-off that flooded several areas along the shoreline. The ground was still frozen so there was little opportunity for the water to be absorbed, which resulted in significant flooding that has not been seen in recent history. This flooding brought solids and dissolved nutrient materials into the lake that will ultimately stimulate unwanted vegetation and algae growth. One of the worst hit areas was Neuses Bay (south side of the lake) where sediment and debris remained on top of the frozen lake after the sheet flooding receded. Dissolved nutrients are exactly what Elkhart Lake Improvement Association (ELIA) has been working to eliminate through projects including the phosphorus reducing filter bed installed along Count J, south of the lake. ELIA had hoped to start a detailed watershed assessment to help better understand issues of runoff that enters the lake. This research is being delayed for another year since we were not awarded the grant funding to support this initiative. In the meantime, ELIA will be working with the county and the DNR on identifying target projects that can move us in this broader watershed management direction, and start developing the baseline information needed for the watershed assessment. ELIA will continue our yearly invasive

species management activities to help reduce and remove plant material for the lake. We are also assessing algae growths that have become a bigger issue in recent years. There is more to be done, including weighing options for treatment of iron bacteria that is entering the lake in addition to phosphorus and sediment. So, even though the lake remains in good shape based in our water quality assessments, we know we need to stay

vigilant on these issues to preserve the beauty of and the enjoyment in the water of Elkhart Lake. We are all a part of the solution! If you are interested in getting involved, please contact us at [email protected]. You can find out about becoming a Member of ELIA or donating towards our efforts at www.KeepElkhartBlue.org. ELIA is a tax deductible 501.c.3 organization. Thank you for your interest as together we work to Keep Elkhart Blue.

Knowles’ “Youth Power Program.” Since their organization in 1968 and first performance in 1969, the Kids from Wisconsin show troupe has performed at state and county fairs, festivals, national trade shows and conventions. Their travels have taken them to many hometown stages as well as distinguished stages such as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, Cabo Hall in Detroit, the Convention

Center in Atlantic City, and the Canadian National Exhibition, which at the time was the world’s largest fair. In the earlier days before artists hired their own opening acts, The KIDS performed before the bigname artists. These included Dianna Ross and The Supremes, Guy Lombardo, Eddie Albert, James Darren, Liberace, Friends of Distinction, George Kirby, Pat Boone, Roger Miller (King of the Road), Sonny and Cher, Johnny Cash, John Davidson and many more. Still today, the program remains a true professional experience and opportunity for growth both in leadership and as performers. It is a privilege and honor for students to take part in the KIDS iconic program after an intense, audition process. Troupe members not only perform to thousands over the summer, but are also trained to provide a hands on, performing arts workshops in many of the communities they perform, helping to spread the love of performing to youth ages 7-13. Since 1969, there have been nearly 1000 alumni that have been part of KIDS. Inside the Bottle

by Jaclyn Stuart CS, DWS, FWS

Cork vs. screw top

taste test has been repeated dozens of times at wineries from France to California with the same results. Screw caps are a superior closure. One winery believed this so much that they would only sell their highly sought after 100-point wine in two-pack sets with one bottle under cork and one under Stelvin. An entire country even switched to screw cap wines a decade ago! New Zealand wineries all bottle their wines - white and red – under Stelvin closures. While some fear that the romance of getting out their favorite corkscrew and popping a cork out of a bottle is gone when they simply crack open a bottle with a screw cap, it is really about what is inside the bottle that counts. You don’t have to track down your opener or worry about packing one when you choose a wine with a screw cap. The trick to opening a Stelvin closure is to grasp the bottom of the metal sheath with your hand (not the top as you would assume) and turn it counterclockwise. Screw caps can sometimes be stubborn if you just try to turn it from the top, but by turning the base, it should click right off. With the ease of opening, there isn’t a better bottle closure for a town like Elkhart Lake. It’s wonderful to just grab a bottle and head down to the lake without worrying about packing anything other than a cup! Just be sure to pack out the bottle and keep our beaches clean – both the bottle and the aluminum closure are recyclable! Cheers!

In nearly every wine class I teach, I am asked about wines that are sealed with a screw cap. It is a closure that, despite being around for decades, is still sneered at by some. Historically, wines with twistoff closures were generally cheap and inferior, but that is no longer the case. Thanks to some ingenuity and technology, screw cap sealed wines offer a closure that is not only simple to open, but also increase their ability to age longer, not suffer from cork taint, and are easy to reseal. It’s time to start avoiding wines bottled with screw caps! For centuries, wine has been bottled with cork closures. These natural closures are created by pulling the bark off the cork oak and creating cylindrical stoppers from a renewable product. No trees are harmed in this process, so the need for screw caps isn’t due to sustainability. While cork provides a breathable, secure closure; it can sometimes contain natural flaws that can spoil the wine. This is where the screw cap excels. Technically called a “Stelvin closure,” the modern screw cap allows the wine to breathe while aging, just like a cork – but better. It seals the bottle to keep wine from leaking out while also letting a micro-dose of oxygen into the bottle to help age the wine. While cork also performs both of these essential tasks, Stelvin closures are manufactured to not contain flaws, burrows, gaps, or rot as corks sometimes have. These flaws in cork can ruin an entire bottle, rendering it undrinkable. Discovering one of your prized bottles of wine is ruined by a faulty cork is one of the biggest disappointments in wine. Wineries around the world started experimenting with Stelvin closures as far back as the 1970s. Top wineries that sell bottles for over $200 put the same wine in both cork and Stelvin-sealed bottles and tasted them blind after years of aging. They discovered that the Stevin wine aged better and more consistently than the same wine under cork because the Stelvin is consistent and predictable unlike the natural variances that occur with a natural product like cork. Market “We were getting more than 250 applications and trying to hold the event to under 100 entries. Things eventually moved out onto the street.” Drees said produce remains the biggest draw for the farmers and artisans market. “People are always looking for great produce. So we remain a farmers market first and secondarily a place for artisans, vintage items and antiques,” she added. Drees said the mix is important to serve a mixed clientele. “A lot of our local neighbors come out to look for produce. But the tourist industry, and all the people coming for Road America, the resorts and the lake see things differently. They don’t want to buy produce. They come looking for souvenirs,” Drees noted. For others, like some of the racing clubs, the farmers market offers a social opportunity. “They go there to have a cup of coffee and catch up and visit with old friends,” Drees said. Chamber a big help

Running the farmers market for so many years became second nature to Drees, but she does realize it was a lot of work, looking back. “You kind of get a rhythm in your head about the whole thing. I remember the first 10 years of running the market that the whole process would start in January. There were times that the phone seemed to ring non-stop with inquiries about booth space.” Today, the Elkhart Lake Chamber of Commerce staff provides invaluable assistance to the process. “Those gals have made it so easy for me. They have a lot of organization experience and they are open to new ideas. “They literally do all the work. I justs help with odds and ends. On Saturday

mornings, I stop in and get the report to see who’s coming and who’s not, and then I get to tell they people where they have to go to set up their displays,” she said. “I am so grateful to the chamber staff for the way they have it set up. They make it easy and enjoyable,” Drees noted. The change in workload, even allows Drees the opportunity to occasionally host a booth of her own at the market She brings jewelry, woodcarving and sculptures to the market on those occasions. “I am really somewhat retired these days and not really committing to a lot of things. Many of her items are on display at Abler Art Glass near Kiel. Promising future

Surviving evolutions of the past 30 years, the Elkhart Lake Farmers and Artisans Market is as strong as ever. “We have worked a lot of the bugs out over the years, and we have been around a long time,” Drees said. “It has improved every year and we seem to get better and better at putting it all together,” she added. Drees said the market has one added attraction, and that pertains to the vendors. “As artists we don’t gt out in public much, but when we have events like this we get to see our friends, too,” she noted. “It’s a great environment, and we get to connect with people from literally all over the world.” Farmers and artisan market Saturdays are opening a bit earlier this year, in an attempt to serve visitors on the Memorial Day weekend. The first market will take place this Saturday. Hours are always 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Haucke Plumbing & Heating takes on wide scope of services for customers By Mike Mathes

for the Depot Dispatch

Since 1983, Haucke Plumbing & Heating in Plymouth has been the first call for businesses and homeowners across Sheboygan County and Eastern Wisconsin. Haucke Plumbing & Heating, a new member of the Elkhart Lake Chamber of Commerce, provides complete plumbing, piping and heating system installation service for homes, business and industry. The Haucke staff has the training and experience to plan, design, fabricate and install nearly any residential or commercial plumbing or piping system. “Quality products, expert workmanship and reliable service are our foundation,” owner Mike Haucke said. A second-generation owner of Haucke Plumbing & Heating, Mike Haucke recently took over the sole ownership of the business. His father, Gary, is credited with starting the business in 1983. Mike began working for his dad in 1992, and holds an associates degree in mechanical design and a second degree in journeyman workers studies.

Wide range of services

One of the keys to the success of Haucke Plumbing and Heating lies in serving the needs of customers, regardless of the size and scope of a job. “We do anything ranging from fixing someone’s faucet to jobs where we have crews working on multi-year projects. I think that sets us apart from other large mechanical contractors or small one- and two-person shops,” he said. “We bring the flexibility to do a diversity of plumbing and we service all our products and installations,” Haucke said.

Design-build capabilities

Even though the company offers a widely flexible line of services, Haucke Plumbing & Heating has gained a great reputation for its work in food industry equipment installations. “Here in eastern Wisconsin we have a strong presence of food industry manufacturing. Haucke has been serving this area since we started and have developed a specialties division to focus on their specific needs.” “Many of these projects represent the type of design-build work that Haucke Plumbing & Heating has become known for. “We team up with engineers on major projects to help make the projects successful. Our team has design-build experience, and we understand how systems work,” Haucke said. “We are never just throwing pipe up because someone said so.” Haucke said his team has learned to question things that don’t seem right. “We always have our customers in mind first, and want to make sure things are done correctly for them,” he said.

Key personnel

Haucke works closely with customers to budget, design, install and complete projects from small repairs to large commercial and industrial facilities. Can you identify the photo? Take a look at June mystery photo above. Do you know anything about it? Where was the location? What was the approximate year? Do you know specific building in the photo? If so, let us know! To enter the June contest, send an email or letter with as many details as you can include to the Elkhart Lake Chamber. Either drop off at our office, or email [email protected]. The person with the best submission will receive a finely matted, quality enlarged print of the original, courtesy of Schamberger Gallery in Elkhart Lake. The winning entry for May was submitted by Barbara Mann Barcal. In he entry, she stated— This photo is at the northwest corner of Woodside Lane & County J -just west of Road America Gate 4 in the town of Plymouth circa 1950’s. The tracks were from the Chicago and Northwestern railroad line that brought many vacationers to the resort town of Elkhart Lake back in the day when the trains were running. The photo shows a small shed of some sort that was probably

owned by the railroad. This land was owned by my Great Grandmother Anna Zeigler Wifler after her husband, Charles, passed away in 1911. She eventually sold this piece of property to the Sheboygan Lime Co and moved her family across County J and along Karpathy Lane and County C to another farmstead prior to 1941. Currently the hillside there is being excavated for gravel/lime. As well as the property across the road (County J) to the south. The Mullet River runs close by and you can still see some of the old road and a small bridge over the Mullet.

Meet and greet offers chance to meet new principal

Grace Lutheran Church

Sunday Divine Service.......................... 9 am (May 27-Sept. 2) Thursday Divine Service..........................7 pm

By Dr. Ann Buechel-Haack Elkhart Lake Glenbealah District Administrator

As you may or may not have been aware, during the months of March and April, we as a school district have been working with a committee to find just the “right” person to fill the role of elementary/ middle school principal beginning in the 2019-20 school year as after 11 years as principal, Mrs. Debbie Hammann is moving on to a new part-time position in the District to “free up” time to spend with family and other pursuits. While we will miss her leadership, we wish her all the best as she begins a “new stage” in her life—both personally and professionally. After reviewing almost 60 applications and working with two separate interviewing committees to narrow down the candidate pool, I am happy to announce the final decision has been made. At their May meeting, the School Board approved my recommendation that was based on feedback from the principal search/interviewing committees that fully supported the candidate. The Board offered a contract. The candidate has accepted, so now it’s time to share the good news! I am very pleased to announce that our new elementary/middle school principal beginning officially with the 2019-20 school year is Mr. Todd Fischer. Mr. Fischer comes to Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah from the Stockbridge District with a variety of experiences that will serve our district, our students, and our staff well. He also worked in the Sheboygan Falls and Howards Grove School Districts with a total of 16 years in education, in addition to serving for almost 8 years as a Program and Branch Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs in Green Bay and Howards Grove. He comes to us with experiences in many areas including: Teaching in the area of business education grades 5-12, counseling JK-grade 12, experience in the roles of Dean of Students, Associate Principal, Curriculum Coordinator and Technology Coordinator, coaching, training in RtI/Positive Behavior Interventions and extensive involvement in a wide variety of both school and community activities. In addition to viewing candidates in the role as the elementary/middle school principal, the needs of the district were also considered. Upon deliberation, it was the committee’s consensus that Mr. Fischer, with his past experiences in a variety of roles, was a candidate that well fit both the needs of the elementary/middle school and the district as a whole. He has certainly demonstrated that he has the ability to “wear many hats” – which is what Mrs. Hammann did so well, and her successor will certainly also need to do. Working for many years in the Stockbridge and Howards Grove School Districts, Mr. Fischer appreciates the unique and special dynamics of a small school and is eagerly looking forward to becoming a part of not only the ELG School family, but also an active member in the ELG community. From Mr. Fischer’s past record, we know it won’t be long before he is actively involved in many of the community’s activities. As Mr. Fischer lives in nearby Howards Grove, you’ll be seeing him often around town! Mr. Fischer will officially start his posi-

While Mrs. Debbie Hammann will be “officially” ending in her position of elementary/middle principal at that time, we are very happy she will continue to be involved in the continued operation of the school and assist with transitioning Mr. Fischer into his leadership role. She will assume the role and duties of Director of Special Education and Pupil Services in a part-time capacity, in addition to assisting with the 2019 summer school program. We feel so fortunate to have her experience and continued guidance. By working with staff, parents, community and students, so much was done under her leadership to continue to grow our student offerings and advance the achievements of our elementary/ middle school students. A perfect example is our grade of “Significantly Exceeds Expectations” on our School’s report card issued by the State’s Department of Public Instruction. While we look forward to the new ideas and perspectives Mr. Fischer will bring with him, we also want to be sure to maintain and further grow what has helped our school and our students be so successful in the past. Please help Mr. Fischer feel at home at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah by stopping in to visit or just say hi. He’d love to meet you! We are offering you a chance to do so by planning a “Meet and Greet” with him on Wednesday, May 29 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the ELG Elementary/ Middle School IMC (Library). Also during this time, please take the opportunity to show your appreciation to Mrs. Hammann for her 11 years as the elementary/ middle school principal. We owe her many thanks for all she’s done for the school, the community and especially for our students. I hope you join me and the School Board in wishing both Mr. Fischer and Mrs. Hammann good luck in their new roles as we warmly and enthusiastically welcome them to their new positions for next school year! I know they will do a great job for our district and are more than up to the challenge.

Library touts new surroundings with May open house The Elkhart Lake Public Library held an open house on Tuesday May 14, 2019, welcoming its patrons and the local community to come and explore the newly remodeled and redecorated library facility. The new furnishings and décor are done in bright and cheery colors which welcome users to relax and enjoy the vast collection of materials, most of which can be borrowed at no cost. The mission statement of our library is “to provide quality materials, programs and services in an environment, which is respectful and welcoming, to fulfill the information, education, recreation al and cultural needs of the community it services”. The Library Board Directors and Staff focused on enhancing the “welcoming” feeling as it chose new furniture and features which are comfortable and reflective of our fun and vibrant community. Better utilization of space and display of materials showcase all that the library already had to offer along with some new surprises and exciting features. Generous donations over the past several years from patrons and the local community provided the funding and were put to best use to serve and satisfy the needs of our community into the next decade and beyond. More than just a place to check out

books and video materials, the library has three roles: It serves as a current topics and materials center, a center for community information, and of greatest importance, as a youth services center. Considerable thought and effort was put into updating and enhancing the children’s and young adult’s areas. The library has a considerable “local history” section, which has been expanded and offers an amazing walk through the colorful and storied history of the Elkhart Lake area. Computers are provided for public use, and high speed WIFI is available. The friendly and helpful staff are always ready and eager to answer questions and help users find what interests them. The summer reading program “A Universe of Stories” and many exciting activities for children and families are just beginning. Not just for local residents, the library welcomes visitors and vacationers to enjoy its services as well. The Elkhart Lake Public Library is located at 40 Pine Street in the garden level of the Grashorn Civic Center adjacent to the village park in downtown Elkhart Lake. View the website at www.elkhartlakepubliclibrary.org or call 920-876-2554 for more info. Stop in today and let your library adventure begin!

June is the month of brides

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Middle School Student Government recently held a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities. Students dressed “Backwards for a Change” bringing in $200 to support RMHC. Pictured above are Genevieve Herren (5th grade), Theo Duenk (6th grade), Katelyn Bunke (6th grade).

Library to hold cookie sale

Every year, for more than 10 years, the Friends of the Library group gathers to package homemade cookies that are sold prior to the Elkhart Lake Fireman’s Parade. This year, more than 45 bakers, all using the same recipe, baked over 1,600 cookies; several members of the Friends of the Library and the Elkhart Lake Study Club gathered to package each cookie individually for 12 groups of people to sell for $1 each during the annual Fireman’s Parade July 1. The event is always a sell out! The money is used for the library to fund many things sponsoring author visits, an

Ancestry.com membership for the library, books for the Summer Reading Program and many book clubs and also held an antique appraisal event. This year the Friends were able to give a generous donation to the children’s area during the library renovation project. Friends of the Library also host the Lights of Love and the Annual Library Book Sale held July 26 & 27. Stop by the Elkhart Lake Library for more information on becoming a cookie baker and/or selling cookies at the parade. You can also learn how to become a member of the Friends of the Library.

June is traditionally the month of brides. In 2019, at New Holstein’s historic Timm House, a special display focuses on brides from the past, or more accurately, the dresses eight brides wore on their wedding days. The eloquence of the wedding fashions perfectly complements the stylish interior décor of the New Holstein Historical Society’s Victorian house. The wedding dresses span a time slot from 1907 to 1961. They are displayed in various rooms throughout the restored Victorian home. Each dress is accompanied by a short history of “happenings in New Holstein” for the year the dress was worn. Where possible, a photo of the bride wearing the gown is also displayed. The dresses are part of the New Holstein Historical Society’s collection, or are on loan from friends of the NHHS. Both the Timm House and the NHHs’s Pioneer Corner Museum are open weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays thru the 27th of October. Admission to either the Timm House, or the

PC Museum, is $7 for adults and $5 for children. A combo ticket for both venues is available at $10 for adults and $7 for children. Combo tickets need not be used for both venues on the same day. Appointments for tours at times other than the regular weekend hours may be made by calling (920) 948-7748 or (920) 898-5746.

LTC fetes staff, students, community leadership

The Elkhart Lake Chamber of Commerce was the first event held at the opening of El Teatro Cantina. The new Mexican restaurant is located in what was the theater on the Victorian Village property. El Teatro officially opened for business on Friday, May 17. The century-old theater is revamped and livelier than ever. El Cantina & Show features live bands, karaoke, witty improv, authentic food, choice margaritas and a fresh guacamole cart. Open year-round for dinner. Also available for private party bookings.

At the Lakeshore Technical College annual awards reception held May 10, excellence both in and out of the classroom was recognized among students, staff, and community leaders. Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig received the 2019 Alumnus of the Year award. The award is given to an LTC graduate who demonstrates outstanding achievement in their career, provides service to the community, and demonstrates loyalty to the college. Hartwig is a 1998 alumnus of what is known today as LTC’s Criminal Justice-Law Enforcement program. “Do something that makes a difference,” Hartwig advised the audience. “Find someone to look up to as a role model, and surround yourself with positive people.” Ben Harrison, owner and CEO of Kaysun Corporation, received the Educational Leadership award which goes to an individual who exhibits outstanding service above self in building an educational

foundation to help others become their personal best. “I’m proud to support LTC, a college with great leadership and programs. I encourage Kaysun employees to attend,” said Harrison. Faculty and staff who were honored with LTC Team Dealer in Hope awards include Practical Nursing Instructor Kristin Gadzinski, Clinical Skills Lab Facilitator Kathy Leonhardt, and Energy and Agriculture Programs Administrative Specialist Kitty Thiele. This award is given to those who continually go above and beyond to deal hope to LTC students inside and outside the classroom, and help students reach their academic and professional goals. Students are nominated by faculty and staff for program and club leadership excellence awards. Among this year’s recipients, was Frederick Meyer, of Elkhart Lake in the Automotive Maintenance Technician program.
