F
ifteen years ago, Fred and Nora Seemann were in the midst of a painful struggle. After many years of suspicion, their daughter confessed to living a homosexual lifestyle. The news was devastating and the period that followed was dark and difficult. Laughter became a thing of the past and hope seemed scarce and fleeting, but through it all Fred and Nora loved their daughter unconditionally and continued to pray for her. “It’s hard. As parents we can’t put a Band-Aid on it and be healed,” said Nora. “But God can still work.” In addition to persevering through prayer, however, the Seemanns also sought out support, which led them to a community called Bridge of Hope, a downtown Columbus ministry that works with men and women struggling with unwanted same-sex attraction and their families. Finding the group was a major encouragement to Fred and Nora, but what they didn’t know at the time, was what a significant impact it would have on their own ministry and future. Their experience at Bridge of Hope, along with their heart for those struggling with same-sex attraction and their families, eventually led Fred and Nora to launch their own group, called Circle of Love, at Vineyard Columbus in 2006. The group meets once a month and averages around 20 people, many of whom travel a great distance to be there. “There’s a really great need for support in this area,” said Fred. “People come from London, Cleveland and Newark,” added Nora. “They tell us there’s nothing else out there.” “We e-mailed some different churches around here and got no response,” said Dan Craig, of Brunswick, Ohio, who along with his wife, Jane, started attending Circle of Love in August 2008. “We found Circle of Love online and thought, ‘Columbus isn’t too far.” Circle of Hope was an answer to prayer for the Craigs, who were completely caught off-guard when their daughter told them she was gay. They struggled with what to do and where to turn, but one of the most difficult things was dealing with the isolation they felt. “I was raised in a Baptist church and it always seemed like they made the sin of homosexuality so much worse than anything else,” said Jane. “We kind of knew how some of the people in our church felt and that made it really difficult. It was something I never thought we would deal with.” By contrast, however, Dan and Jane found Circle of Love to be a welcoming place with people who really understood their situation and their struggles.

February 2011 • www.vineyardcolumbus.org
“Nora was just so great,” said Jane. “I remember we went down (to Columbus) and talk about nervous… we had no idea what we were getting into. It’s amazing how God directed us to Circle of Love. Having somebody there that knew what we were going through was reassuring, and then as we were there, we also realized we could encourage other people going through the same stuff.” Circle of Love was originally created for spouses, parents and family members of individuals struggling with same-sex attraction, but has since grown to include men and women who have come out of the lifestyle, which has served as a huge encouragement to many of its members. “We just felt like the Lord was trying to lead us to open the group to people who are struggling with same-sex attraction themselves,” said Fred. “And I think it’s been very helpful. It gives us hope that change is possible and it also answers many questions that we could never answer.” For each meeting. Fred and Nora prepare relevant talking points. Sometimes they’re based on Nora’s own research, but often times they come directly from a prior meeting or questions that were raised during her correspondence with people who reach out to her online. “I don’t think Nora and I impart all that much helpful information,” said Fred. “The biggest thing about our group is that people just have an opportunity to share and see that they’re not alone. That there are others there as well who are struggling with the same things, and that really seems to help.” In addition to being the point person for Circle of Love and a facilitator of the group, Nora provides support to hundreds of people dealing with the issue of same-sex attraction through her monthly newsletter that goes out to 128 people. It’s all part of an effort to make sure no one, including those who are too far,or too uncomfortable, has to feel alone. Ten years ago Fred and Nora Seemann’s daughter made the decision to come out of the homosexual lifestyle, and last year Dan and Jane Craig’s daughter did the same. For both families it was an answer to prayer and a blessing they won’t soon forget. “When you go there and new parents come, they always look for what they can say or what verse will change their son or daughter, but it’s just a process,” said Dan. “It just depends on God. I told them the last time I was there that unless you know exactly what God wants you to do just get out of the way and let Him work.” “I think God wants to see victory in the lives of homosexual people,” said Fred. “And the church can help bring that victory if we can just get it right. I think if we get it right, they’ll listen.” For more information on Circle of Love, contact Fred and Nora at circle.of.love@ sbcglobal.net, or contact Support & Recovery Ministry at support.recovery@ vineyardcolumbus.org or 614.259.5289.
