For centuries man has reached out through art to form a link from generation to generation. The creation and appreciation of art enhances one’s awareness of the beauty and meaning of life. It was such an awareness that prompted the forming of what is now Brenham Fine Arts League. What began in 1956 to promote awareness and appreciation of art in the community has continued to quietly serve the area for almost 60 years. Membership is now nearing 100. They offer scholarships annually to three high school seniors, classes four days a week in several mediums for both children and adults, numerous workshops through the year, an annual spring Judged Art Show, the Washington County Fair judged art competition, and other fun events. Monthly meetings are held the third Monday at noon for networking and sharing. Guests are always welcome. As of January 2015, the Downtown Art Gallery, LLC became a member-owner gallery providing a place to sell artwork and house an extensive art library and the Brenham Fine Arts League. The Gallery is located at 113 W. Alamo in historic downtown Brenham, and is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. till 5 p.m.

The Fortnightly Club was organized in December 1895 by 12 women who wanted to learn more about the literary arts.  Their search for knowledge led them to establish the first and only public library in Brenham in February 1901.  They collected about 1,000 books and opened the library in donated space in the Giddings Bank building located on the corner of Park and Alamo Streets. Since 1901 the primary beneficiary of Fortnightly fundraising has been the public library, now called the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library.  The Annual Used Book Sale to benefit the library is scheduled for February 25-28 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. This year, they will celebrate the 120th anniversary of founding of The Fortnightly Club and in 2016 will recognize the 115th birthday of the library. They look forward to celebrating that event in the renovated and expanded building that will be under construction in the very near future. The Used Book House is located at 906 N. Park St., across from Fireman’s Park.

Boost your visibility by hosting breakfast Hosting a Chamber event can be a great way to expose your company, your products and/or services, and your staff to the greater Washington County business community. The “Wake Up, Washington County” networking breakfasts are held quarterly. We are looking for host site sponsorships for February, May, August and November. Sponsorships are available each quarter for $200. This promotion is a great value and opportunity to bring 30-50 people through your doors! Breakfast sponsors are needed to cover the cost of food and coffee. Your business can be included as a food sponsor for $150. All sponsors receive valuable exposure on mailed invitations, in the Chamber newsletter, in emails, and at the event. Please contact Jane Hinze, Member Services Manager, as soon as you read this article if you are interested at 979-836-3695 or [email protected]. Mark your calendar now and maybe this will be your New Year’s resolution…to become a great networking partner of the Chamber. You will be surprised at the things you will learn about this community and the connections you will make when you attend Chamber events. Together we can make 2015 great.

Banquet retired in 2014: Jolene Curtis, Tiffany Falk, Pam Green and Jared Hartman. Then, the Blue Blazer of the Year award was announced by Chamber Member Services Manager Jane Hinze. It was won by Tammy Jaster, who was very surprised and gratefully accepted.

Nita Hyatt won the 2014 Woman of the Year-Lifetime Achievement Award. She was introduced by 2013 winner Lanella Gray. Donald Ahrens won the 2014 Man of the Year Award, introduced by the prior year’s winner Bill Rankin. Both winners were stunned and surprised. They expressed sincere

appreciation for being selected and talked about what a great community this is to live in and serve others. That concluded a wonderful evening of celebration for this community’s business leaders and hard-working volunteers. Plans for next year’s banquet are already underway.

Leadership in the State In January, the Leadership class traveled to Austin for the State Government session. This session provides in-depth information about our state’s legislative process and judicial process. Newly elected State Senator Lois Kolkhorst (LWC Class of 1995) joined the class in the Senate Chamber for questions and answers. She showed the location of her new desk and explained various protocols of the Senate. She also led the class onto the House floor and talked about the difference between the two chambers. She explained the roles of state lawmakers and possible scenarios that might occur during a legislative hearing. Leadership class members were reminded that our state Senators and Representatives like to hear from constituents and encouraged everyone to contact her office at any time with concerns. The class also got a sneak peek into Senator Kolkhorst’s new office, located on the third floor of the Capitol. After visiting with Sen. Kolkhorst, participants enjoyed a professionally guided tour of the Capitol, hearing about the history of the various statues, paintings, architecture and much more. Following lunch in the Capitol Grill, the class walked to the Texas Supreme Court building. It was raining, but the class had VIP access through the tunnels! They received a rare chance to sit in the court and met with Justice Don Willett. He told the class about what inspired him to become a lawyer and the various roles and positions that led to his achieving an appointment as a Justice of the Texas Supreme Court. The next session will focus on Education in Washington County. Leadership Washington County is a program of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce designed to train and motivate current and future leaders for our community. The next class will form in July. For more details and/or an application, please call the Chamber at (979) 836-3695 or visit www. BrenhamTexas.com.

Washington County Day at the Capitol - Feb. 24

As our State legislators and officials convene for the 84th Legislative Session, the Chamber of Commerce will hold its biannual Washington County Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, February 24. The all-day event presents a great public relations opportunity for Washington County residents to visit their legislators and see them in action. Activities begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Rotunda of the Capitol, when the Brenham State Supported Living Center choir performs.  Following that, resolutions will be read in the House and Senate about Washington County and several of local elected officials will be recognized. The day is sponsored by Brenham National Bank, Germania Insurance, Blue Bell Creameries and Del Sol Food Company/Briannas. The Chamber would like to say a special thank you to these businesses for their support of this important event. In continuing a tradition set in place during Lt. Governor Bob Bullock’s tenure, elected officials from Brenham & Washington County will serve Blue Bell ice cream in a private reception for state senators, representatives, officials and their staff. Del Sol Food Company will give gifts of Briannas Salad Dressing to all state legislators.

Gifts from other local companies may be distributed too.  Please inquire by Feb. 13 if you would like to make a donation from your business (185 items are required to include all state legislators). Teams of volunteers will deliver gifts to each individual legislator’s office throughout the Capitol, along with information about the Top Legislative Priorities for Washington County. Chamber members are welcome to attend, and a few volunteers are still needed to help with the gift deliveries to Senate and House offices. If you have never been to the Capitol in Austin, this will be an exciting and meaningful day to attend. Even if you have been many times before, participating in Washington County Day at the Capitol is guaranteed to make your pride in Washington County grow even deeper. Volunteers may choose to ride to Austin by bus with the Chamber staff. Call to sign up as a volunteer by Feb. 13. The Top Legislative Priorities for Washington County this year are posted on the Chamber’s website, www.BrenhamTexas.com. If there is an issue your business is monitoring this legislative session, please contact us to let us know (979-8363695, [email protected]).
