From the Top...

President’s Message Welcome to the year of shopping local.

I’m so excited to fill the position of president of the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce this year. I have been an active member of the chamber since 2006, when I first became a member during my time as editor of The Orland Park Prairie newspaper. I was later asked to serve on the Board of Directors in 2007. I was editor of The Prairie until late 2013 when I was promoted to Chief Events Officer for The Prairie’s parent company, 22nd Century Media. I now plan, coordinate and execute events and expos for 22nd Century Media and its 14 publications, as well as coordinate its online Plus program and serve as managing editor to the

Malibu Surfside News in Malibu, California. I grew up in Lockport and graduated from Providence Catholic High School (1999) before earning a bachelor’s degree in print journalism with minors in public relations and multimedia from Lewis University (2003). I currently reside in Joliet with my cat Deuces and dwarf African tree frogs Billie Jean and Thriller. In my spare time, I love to do concert photography for The Tinley Junction, cook for friends, family and coworkers and attend fairs and festivals. I’ve known the southwest suburbs my entire life and couldn’t love this Orland Park area any more than I do already. I spend plenty of time within Orland’s borders and do the majority of my shopping here as well. I have a big passion for local business and seeing them become

successful. We have a lot of exciting ideas planned for 2015 for our OPACC members. My main initiative this year is to drive home the point of shopping local and encourage people to utilize the businesses in our Orland Park area FIRST. The benefits of keeping the dollars local are numerous. To help drive this point home, we’re planning to hold a Shop OPACC Week Oct. 25-31. There will be more details to come on that so keep an eye out in upcoming chamber email blasts and Chambergrams. If you ever need to reach me, please send me an email at [email protected] or contact me at my office at (708) 326-9170 ext. 16. I look forward to serving the chamber in 2015!

Orland Park began the year 2014 being named one of Chicago Magazine’s “Best Places to Live.” This is a great honor for the village with our low crime rate, exceptional amenities and access to downtown Chicago all being important factors in Orland Park being named. In 2014, the Orland Park Police Department developed and implemented a comprehensive plan involving additional resources, community outreach and crime analysis to reduce the number of burglaries occurring within the village. As a result, the number of reported burglaries declined by 57.1 %. The number of burglaries in 2014 was the least amount reported in seven years.

22nd Century Media

Our local economy moving forward and construction is on the rise as Orland Park welcomed more than 150 new businesses and saw the construction of 80 new homes with 2180 permits issued for work on existing homes. Old Orland had three new in-fill home sites under construction this past year. Through November, the value of new residential construction is $18,340,000 with existing

being $23,548,000. A new office building was constructed with 125 existing commercial permits issued at a value of $14,871,000 through November. Orland Park continues to be the location of choice for national, regional and local businesses as we celebrated a number of grand openings this past year.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation with this massive IDOT project through the center of Orland Park and apologize for the inconveniences. We all look forward to its completion --- seeing the long overdue improvements made to this gateway through Orland Park. The past year also brought a number of other road improvements, the details for which you can find on the village’s website at www.orlandpark.org.

The Village of Orland Park was honored by the Chaddick Institute of DePaul University with the 2014 Commuter Rail Station Development Award. Also, the Congress of New Urbanism hosted its Illinois Fall Conference in Orland Park because of the vision and execution of Orland Park’s downtown planning efforts. The coming year brings the planned completion of IDOT’s LaGrange Road Expansion Project later in 2015. This schedule and construction staging is dependent on weather and utility relocations and are subject to change. Regular updates appear on this website at http://orlandpark.org/index. aspx?nid=1561. LaGrange Road currently carries 40,000 vehicles per day and is expected to carry more than 65,000 vehicles per day by the year 2040. The improvements currently being made are necessary to improve traffic flow and safety through this essential transportation corridor.

Resource Corner Advertising in the Digital Arena

What type of advertising should your company be using? Are you familiar with the new Digital products available? Is Print still a viable option for you? Print advertising of any kind is still an excellent, affordable option for local and large businesses. Why else would the Big Box Stores be placing full page ads and inserts into local newspapers? Print advertising, as many have said, is NOT dead. It is a necessary tool to promote your business; regardless of the type of services and products you sell or offer. Statistics from numerous media organizations show that print advertisers see a huge return on their investment in two different ways. The two Types of ads: Point of Purchase (POP)/Call to action

advertising: This is a type of ad that calls the consumer to take an action. For example: a sale, a BOGO or a special event that you are planning. It calls the consumer to stop into your business, and try a new product line, or purchase familiar items that are discounted. Image or TOM (Top of Mind) advertising. This is the second way to promote your company and keep your company name in front of paid subscribers to newspapers, or online readers of specific media products. This type of advertising usually consists of image ad content. Your company logo and your unique business proposition is a MUST for inclusion in your ad copy. This is a great way to keep YOUR company name in front of the people that are ready to BUY products and services. The beneficial thing to your print ads, regardless if TOM or POP ad content, is that once designed, these same ads can easily be converted into digital advertising. Digital advertising

Submitted by Lisa Campbell, Southtown Star/Chicago Tribune

is simply ad copy utilizing the digital media available today. This includes, website banner ads, cube ads, page take over’s, interactive video as well as any social media or Smartphone advertising. Digital Products: What are they and how can I maximize my investment? Digital products are simply ways to advertise online, or in the Smartphone or tablet arena. Many newspapers have a variety of products online that will help you drive traffic to your place of business. A very popular tool these days is Native Advertising. Native advertising is simply SPONSORED CONTENT. It is a subtle way to promote your business, inserted into online editorial copy, that is centered on your industry. It is an excellent way to position your company as the expert, or “go to” place for a specific type of product and service. Typically, this sponsored content appears in the middle of a news

organization’s web page and will have a link to your specific company website. Traffic and page views for this type of advertising are usually extremely high in terms of HOW MANY people see your ad copy and click through to your website. Lastly, keep in mind that the best advertising plan is to BE CONSISTENT. Buying one print ad, or one online ad, will not give you the results you desire. Frankly the best budget buy from any media organization will include advertising on a weekly basis. Repeatedly putting your company name in front of readers and consumers in print or online, is the best way to maximize your advertising dollar. The most successful companies in the world have achieved success with this repetitive advertising strategy. If you would like a free advertising analysis, or an online visibility review, please contact Lisa Campbell at lcampbell@ southtpownstar.com or 312-7300675.
