From Our Pastor Change: The Unchanging and Yet Ever-Changing Reality We’ve all heard the jokes about “change.” You know the jokes about people’s stubborn resistance to change. Well, to be more specific the jokes about Lutheran people’s stubborn resistance to change. Example: How many Lutherans does it take to change a light bulb? Response: Change??!!?? Change can often seem uncomfortable, difficult, and frustrating to many people. It puts us in an uneasy spot of being stretched beyond our normal balance, raising all kinds of questions that are not quickly answered? It raises questions of purpose and direction. It raises questions about our abilities to adapt and learn new things. It even can raise questions of identity (How do we see ourselves?) and relationships (How can and how will we work through this together?). Change is in everything from our homes to our workplaces. Change affects everything from our laws, to our family dynamics, to our technology (Side Note - For a great clip on change and technology, go on YouTube and search “Medieval helpdesk with English subtitles.”). Calvary has seen its fair share of change over these past five years. We see changes within the names and faces of staff members. We see changes in the ministries and leaders within our church. We have seen many faithful members go to be with the Lord and many others go to continue the work of God’s kingdom in other parts of the country or world. Even now we find ourselves in the winds of change as we extend a call for our associate pastor position and as we prepare for Abe Sinn our Youth & Family Ministry Director to transition over the coming months into fulltime counseling. And yet in that change, we turn our hearts and minds to the words of our Lord to help guide us through all of life’s circumstances. Whether we are those who are comfortable with change or not, our Lord offers to us the gift of Jesus Christ, who according to Hebrews 13:8, “is the same yesterday and today and forever.” There is no part of our past that He hasn’t forgiven, no part of our present that He doesn’t provide His support, and there is no part of our future that He doesn’t hold in his gracious hands. One of my favorite passages is from Malachi 3, which says, “6 For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. 7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts.” (3:6-7a). While many things around us may change and in the words of Psalm 46:1-3 “though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, and the mountains tremble at its swelling… [yet] God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear.” Our God’s compassions call us back again and again out of our fruitless searches to live our lives on our terms. He calls, “Return to me” (Malachi 3:7a) for He has not changed, but often we have. As we begin a new year and turn to our Heavenly Father for direction and stability during changing times, may He create in us a fearless trust that He holds all of our days in His care. Let us in trust that Christ Jesus has called us to be His children and now goes with us for the sake of His mission. Therefore, let us step out boldly in faith embracing change for the good of His kingdom, for He can even use what makes us uneasy, uncertain, and uncomfortable to shape us for service in His name. May our Lord guide you in the year ahead by His unchanging love for you.

God’s Peace, Pastor Kurt Ebert

Congregational Study! “Ordinary: How to Turn the World Upside Down” Feb 11 – Mar 19 Ordinary is not a call to be more radical. If anything, it is a call to the contrary. The kingdom of God isn't coming with light shows and shock and awe, but with lowly acts of service performed during the normal rhythms of life. Ordinary encourages participants to move into a life of mission and justice―speaking up for the voiceless, caring for the single mom, restoring the broken, bearing burdens, welcoming the functionally fatherless, and speaking the good news to people on a regular basis in order to change the world. The following six sessions make up the essential contents of Ordinary: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Everyday Justice: Trading Sensationalism for Ordinary Christianity Neighbor Love: How Justified Sinners Show Compassion in Word and Deed Kingdom Hospitality: How the King’s People Welcome Others Care for the Vulnerable: How the Father’s Children Love the Fatherless Courageous Advocacy: How God’s People Speak Up for the Voiceless God-Centered Humility: How an Ordinary Christian Walked with His Extraordinary God

Saturday Night Classes for Adults Parable of the Talents: What special gifts has God given you and how do you use them in your life, in your community, and for his glory? (Conference Room) [Feb 4] “Ordinary: How to Turn the World Upside Down” (Conference Room) [Feb 11- Mar 19]

Decision Filters “Mom, can I spend the night at Jimmy’s house?” When a question or request is made of us we all instantly begin a process I call Decision Filtering. Sometimes the filter used to determine the decision has wide open pores rendering a quick and easy decision. Other requests may require a slow, methodical rendering with multi-layered filters before a decision can be made. Many times other individuals may be needed to filter as well. What decisions are easier for you than others? This time of year families consider re-enrolling for the next school year. Our hope and prayer is that we have the opportunity next year to again greet each student in the Lord’s Name and to share in his Christian education. I would also hope that the decision filter has large, open pores rendering very little contemplation or thought. God has richly blessed Calvary Lutheran Church and School with the challenges and opportunities to reach out with the Gospel message while offering a quality, Christian education program. We ask for your prayers as we plan and prepare for the 2017-18 school year stepping out in faith as we are saved to serve ready with an answer. Early Registration / Open Enrollment for 2016-17 New Applications and Re-enrollment are being accepted beginning on February 1 for the 2017-18 school year for all Preschool sessions as well as Kindergarten – 8th Grades. As Calvary’s school has continued to grow, space available in the classrooms has become limited. Be sure to re-enroll your children early to ensure they maintain their placement! Early Registration enables Calvary to plan and prepare staffing and facility needs for the upcoming school year. Early Registration goes through March 15. Enrollment March 15 or later will be assessed a late fee of $50 per student. If you know someone looking for a school home for their family, you can refer them to Amy Andre, Calvary’s Admissions Counselor. She can be reached at 783-2305, [email protected], or online at www.choosecalvary.com. We are so excited to plan for another year of Christian Education for our students! 2017-18 First through Eighth Grade Registration Procedures Returning families may register on line through RenWeb. A meeting with our Bookkeeper, Mrs. Combs is to be scheduled as you set up your account for the 2017-18 schoolyear. Our intent is to streamline this process. Registration applications will be accepted beginning on February 1. Tours of the school may be scheduled any day that school is in session as well. We praise and thank God for the opportunity to share His love with the students of Calvary Lutheran School. Our prayer is that the doors to Calvary include your school- aged children. President’s Day observed School will not be in session on Friday and Monday, February 17-20 in observance of President’s Day. God indeed grants to people the needed abilities to complete the tasks and service that they have been elected to do and accomplish. We thank God for the gifts that He has and continues to give to this country in our presidents. Please note: Friday, February 17 will be a snow make-up day if necessary. Basketball Basketball Basketball February is the month for basketball at Calvary. Many tournaments will be held during this busy month. We invite you to attend any of these games. Please note the dates of the tournaments on the monthly calendar. Exact game times will be announced as the tournament schedules are finalized. We ask the Lord to bless our efforts as we proclaim His love as we witness to others Christian sportsmanship through athletics.

Scholarship Grant Fund We thank and praise God for the gift of love shared by over 45 individuals/ families who contributed $56,000.00 in 2016 towards our SGO goal of $55,000.00. 25 students received scholarship grants and will now be eligible for a Indiana CHOICE voucher for the 2017-18 school year. These gifts also eliminated over $40,000.00 in waived tuition which is annually budgeted for families unable to fully finance school costs. All donations to this fund receive an Indiana state 50% tax credit. Thank you. PLEASE NOTE: The Indiana State tax credits of 9.5 million dollars were all gone as of December 17, 2016. The state fiscal year begins on July 1. No other tax credits will be issued until the new fiscal budget begins. Shared Ministry We thank our Facilities Ministry team for the daily cleaning and other preparation enabling the school doors to be opened each day. From lawn maintenance to snow removal to classrooms vacuumed and rest rooms cleaned, we are blessed to be able open each day with the lights shining and heat radiating. Thank you for this shared ministry. National Lutheran Schools Accreditation Calvary Lutheran Church and School is beginning our NLSA self-study process. We anticipate a November, 2017 accreditation team visit. Many hands are needed as we work through the seven standards. We ask the Lord’s guidance as we undertake this comprehensive journey ever looking to improve our offerings and programs for the students and their families.

Women in Mission Extravagant Sharing Calvary is supporting the Lutheran Child and Family Services Sharing place by sharing extravagantly from their abundant blessings. In January pasta was brought and will be delivered to their distribution center to help the overwhelming need of their clients. In February, please support them with canned and instant potatoes. Purchase and bring them to the Extravagant Sharing location in the church narthex, across from the center church doors. If you like to plan ahead, in March the suggested donation is facial tissues. Providing for the physical needs of others in an ordinary, loving way, will bring Jesus’ love and care to many.

Fellowship Ministry Parish Fellowship Team will be hosting a Reverse Purse Party for Calvary's Weekend of Service, April 8-9. What is a Reverse Purse Party? The idea came from Project Purse Indianapolis and emphasizes "peer to peer giving" rather than "peer to peer selling." Gently used purses are collected and filled with personal health and beauty items, as well as a card of hope and affirmation. The filled purses are then distributed to homeless and disadvantaged women throughout the area. So, as you're cleaning out closets and drawers this winter, bring in all those unwanted purses, we'll put them to good use. Parish Fellowship Team will begin collecting purses in February in a bin outside the church office. More information about this project will be coming soon. If you have questions, contact Linda Bugher at [email protected] or 317-432-1865.

Stewardship Emphasis We’ve all heard that stewardship is giving to the church of our time, talents, and treasure. This alliterative trinity helps us see that giving is not just about money, but about our whole lives. For God has given us everything we have and enjoy as we confess in the meaning to the First Article of the Apostle’s Creed. And what we confess first among those is that God gives us “our body and soul, our eyes, ears, and all our members, our reason and all our senses.” Only then do we confess that he gives us material things. Thus the time, talents, and treasure trinity places before our eyes the fact that we are to give something of all of these things toward the mission of the church in thanksgiving for what God has provided. For everything we have and indeed everything we are comes from God’s fatherly divine goodness and mercy. The problem with this alliterative trinity comes when we replace one little word with another little word—when we replace the word and with the word or. It is always written with the and, but when we read it, we read it with the or. Thus this quite helpful trinity, which extolled that everything that we have and are is a gift from God and which is to be pressed into the service of God in His church, turns into a trinity that we can pick and choose which of the trinity we use into the service of God. The giving of our time, talents, and treasure turns into the giving of our time, talents, or treasure. Then the question arises: Can we give of our time and talents instead of our treasures? Or perhaps it is the other way round: Can we give our treasure and not of our time and our talents? But these are the wrong questions. The right question is, can we give of our time and our talents in addition to our treasure? Yes, indeed, we are called to give of all three. The things that God gives us are not to be pitted against one another. They are given to us and we are to press them all into God’s service for benefit of His church and our neighbors in need. Thus we give all three. We give our treasure in the form of a generous, first-fruits, proportion of our income. We give of our time in generosity for the benefit of Christ’s holy church. We give of our talents in the same manner. Since God gave us all these things, we are called to give generously of all these things in faith toward Him and in fervent love to our neighbors. For God has provided all these things to us. Out of His fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, He gives us each time, talents, AND treasures as a means to bless those around us. We serve our neighbors with these things, blessing them with the blessings in which God has blessed us. We give of our time, talents, and treasures to our families, our society, and to our church, our local congregations. And we do this because we know that we are not our own. Rather, we belong to God. We have been bought with a price—with the holy precious blood and innocent suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. He gave everything—His time, His talents, and His treasure,—to have us as His own and to live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness. We have these things as gifts and blessings from God. Let us then press them all into service for the sake of His love—time, talents, and treasures together.
