Sermon

“The Prayer-Filled Life”

Musical Response

“Calm to the Waves” Please sing twice

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

*Call to Worship Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, said Jesus. And let the one who believes in me drink. As the Scripture has said, Out of the believer’s heart shall flow streams of living water.

Offering Musical Offering “Great is Thy Faithfulness” Collie Roland, tenor; Tristan Davis, bass-baritone

Italian Hymn

There are many times we think we love you well, O God. But upon hearing your call to love you with all our heart, and all our mind, and all our strength, we confess that our love for you is a diluted love, made insipid and flat by lesser loyalties and a divided heart. Our love seems pure only for brief moments; soon our affections are drawn away.

*Doxology

“Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow” Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

*Closing Voluntary

In his book Streams of Living Water, Richard Foster notes that “in our day the Spirit of God is sovereignly bringing together steams of life that have been isolated from one another for a very long time.” These six streams, or “movements,” or “traditions” are rooted in the life of Jesus and describe how God’s Spirit has moved upon individuals and groups of people with a particular mission. During the season of Lent we will delve more deeply into the six “streams” so that we might discover a balanced vision of Christian faith and practice. Some of us have had more experience or practice in a few of the streams, but we have room to grow in other areas. So for the next six weeks we have opportunity to assess our faith and practice and be challenged to grow more Christ-like by learning about and applying the others streams. The six streams are:

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own great presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today, and bright hope for tomorrow Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside. Refrain Thomas O. Chisholm

“Return to God” Please sing twice

*Response in Song “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Worship Note:

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above; Join with all nature in manifold witness, To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

*Assurance of Forgiveness

Love can exclude no race or creed if honored by God’s name; Our common life enbraces all whose Maker is the same. *Charge and Benediction

*If able, please stand.

Refrain: Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Forgive us! In deep mercy spare us, despite of our lost first love for you. In grace rekindle our love for you. Help us to see anew Jesus’ love for us. Amen.

arr. Lloyd Larson

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turing with Thee, Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not, As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

*Confession of Sin

*Congregational Response

Let us recall that in our midst dwells Christ, God’s holy Son. As members of each body joined, in him we are made one.

Let us forgive each other’s faults as we our own confess, That we may love each other well in Christian gentleness.

Paul Manz

“Calm to the Waves”

Pastor Steve Schorr

We must imitate Christ’s life and his ways if we are to be truly enlightened and set free from the darkness of our own hearts. Let it be the most important thing we do, then, to reflect on the life of Jesus Christ. Thomas a Kempis Entrance Voluntary
