A NEW APPROACH TO FAT LOSS & STOP SMOKING THE HEALTHY WAY Have you ever uttered these words? "I will quit smoking" or "my diet starts"...TODAY. Yet by the end of the day, it begins to sound more like, MAYBE TOMORROW. Especially in the new year, most of us have been there when trying to make a positive change in our life. You might feel tired and lacking in motivation to accomplish those goals; however, it’s no longer a cycle you cannot break. Low-level laser for weight control can put you on the path to achieving your weight goals and become more physically fit. This treatment is not meant to replace regular exercise along with favorable eating choices, but it can complement either or both of these and accelerate your results. AcuLaser PLUS is a ninety day weight control plan consisting of three laser therapy sessions, phototherapy patches, sugar detoxification, clean eating regimen and lifestyle counseling. We recommend that each laser treatment be done within four weeks of each other. During the weight control therapy the laser will be applied to acupuncture points located on the arms, hands, legs, and feet, as well as areas on the outer ear. These areas are targeted in order to help raise your metabolic rate to burn calories more efficiently, aid in curbing your appetite, reduce cravings, decrease water rentention, detox your body from sugar, and target your endocrine system and adrenal glands.

As part of your personalized care and our commitment to see you through your goals, you’ll have an easy-to-follow protocol that includes detoxification and behavior modification.

Benefits of Laser Therapy for SMOKING CESSATION Holistic approach without the use of drugs or nicotine replacement products. Physical addiction to nicotine is eliminated. Many smokers want to quit smoking, but cannot get past this period of withdrawal. Smoking cessation therapy stimulates pressure points related to irritability, headaches, insomnia, nervousness and cravings, which are just some of the withdrawal symptoms smokers typically experience when trying to quit. Most people become tobacco-free with just one treatment because laser therapy targets acupuncture points directly related to nicotine addiction and eliminates the issues that cause 70% of smokers to give up.

Change Your Life for the Better! stop smoking. lose weight. reduce stress. AcuLaser Treatment Center uses a therapeutic system combining the ancient medicine of acupuncture with the new technology of low level laser therapy. We are here to be your support system with encouragement to help you on your way to improving the quality of your life.

In the treatment room you will be seated in a comfortable position, and our technician will then apply a low-level laser to acupuncture sites on your body that helps release endorphins, stimulate relaxation and allow the flow of energy. The entire process will feel very relaxing. During the laser treatment pressure points will target the nicotine addiction directly, thus, eliminating your body’s physical need for the drug and dramatically reducing withdrawal symptoms. Worried About Your Thyroid? Fix It Naturally.

By Dr. Amanda Weeks Hirz Are your thyroid labs normal but you still don’t feel right? Chances are you’ve looked up common thyroid symptoms and seen things like low energy, low temperature, dry skin, thinning hair, low libido and low mood. These are all signs of a thyroid disorder. But the truth is, many thyroid problems go undiagnosed. Even if your labs are normal, it could still be your thyroid. Many women are even on thyroid hormone, and they still don’t feel better. Your thyroid is the gas pedal of your hormonal system. It influences a surprising amount of bodily functions like metabolism, vitamin utilization, digestion and blood flow. Because its effects are so wide ranging and so far reaching in the body, no magic pill is going to fix it. You need a balanced approach to your thyroid problems. At Whole Body Health, we approach thyroid problems naturally by addressing the cause of thyroid dysfunction, rather than chasing symptoms. Your body could be depleted from a poor diet and your thyroid might not have what it needs to function properly. Or you might not be converting thyroid hormone properly (a common problem most medical tests miss). When we take this approach, our patients lose weight and start feeling better without having to go on medications or take synthetic hormones. We treat the body as a whole and get to the root of the problem so we can fix your thyroid quickly and naturally.

MEDINA HEALTH FOOD STORE “Let food be thy medicine & medicine be thy food.” - Hippocrates

HEALTH & WELLNESS

February is Heart Healthy Month - Let's make it POSSIBLE! Recently driving by some of the Community Centers, I noticed that already the parking lot is becoming less and less full. Why is that? Many times after the first of the year and January being National Healthy Weight Awareness month, many people with VERY good intentions head to the gym to either get healthy with movement or to lose weight. Once the excitement of the first few weeks is over, once the realization that the scale has not moved, the gym then becomes less exciting. February is known as American Heart Month and cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States; one in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke, that equals to 2,200 deaths per day. These statistics are pretty staggering. While we all know or should know, weight loss can be a big factor in cardiovascular disease. Also, for various health reasons one may not be able to work out. No excessive exercise is required. One step at a time. At Last Diet Ever, we offer a healthy, all natural way to lose weight. A heart-healthy diet is described as being high in Fresh Fruits, Fresh Vegetables and Lean Meats, low in sodium and trans fat. Our program consists of these very same foods. No prepackaged foods or shakes. Real food. Once the program is finished, a new life style is achieved. So whether you have 20 - 30 - 40 or more pounds to lose, you can do so safely and effectively with our Medically Supervised Weight Loss program.

Quality of Life:

LAST DIET EVER stays true to its name... WITH YOU IN MIND If you have 20 or 200 pounds to lose, you can do so safely and effectively with our Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program. Feel Better, Look Better and have more Energy in 2017. All YOU have to lose is POUNDS and INCHES!

Life’s Simple 7 Controlling your risk for heart disease Do you know there are seven easy ways to help control your risk for heart disease? Manage your heart risk by understanding “Life’s Simple 7.”

heart disease by successfully losing weight and keeping it off. Even losing as few as five or ten pounds can produce a dramatic blood pressure reduction

Daily physical activity increases your length and quality of life. If you get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day (like brisk walking), five times per week, you can almost guarantee yourself a healthier and more satisfying life while lowering your risks for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose (or blood sugar) that our bodies use for energy. Your body makes a hormone called insulin that acts like a carrier to take your food energy into your cells. If your fasting blood sugar level is below 100, you are in the healthy range. If not, your results could indicate diabetes or pre-diabetes.

1. Get active

2. Control cholesterol

When you control your cholesterol, you are giving your arteries their best chance to remain clear of blockages. Cholesterol is a waxy substance and our bodies use it to make cell membranes and some hormones, but when you have too much bad cholesterol (LDL), it combines with white blood cells and forms plaque in your veins and arteries. These blockages lead to heart disease and stroke.

3. Eat better

Healthy foods are the fuel our bodies use to make new cells and create the energy we need to thrive and fight diseases. If you are frequently skipping out on veggies, fruit, low-fat dairy, fiber-rich whole grains, and lean meats including fish, your body is missing the basic building blocks for a healthy life.

4. Manage blood pressure

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. When your blood pressure stays within healthy ranges, you reduce the strain on your heart, arteries, and kidneys which keeps you healthier longer.

5. Lose weight

If you have too much fat — especially if a lot of it is at your waist — you’re at higher risk for such health problems as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and diabetes. If you’re overweight or obese, you can reduce your risk for

6. Reduce blood sugar

7. Stop smoking

Cigarette smokers have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. If you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do for your health. Smoking damages your entire circulatory system, and increases your risk for coronary heart disease, hardened arteries, aneurysm and blood clots.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Why are you so tired? You are not alone! Worn out and weary, women across the country named fatigue among their top five health concerns. (webmd.com) Dr. Sharma shares several possible causes of fatigue and suggestions to put the spring back into your step.

1.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck and produces the hormones that regulate how your body burns fuel for energy. It can be overactive or underactive, but either way you'll feel sleepy. An underactive thyroid can make feel like you can't get your engine going. With an overactive thyroid your engine's on overdrive and you start to burn out. A simple test can determine if there is an issue.

2.

When your heart isn't pumping efficiently, it can't get enough blood out to your body, and that can make you tired. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints of women with heart disease. If you have heart risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, and a family history of heart conditions, have your heart checked out. Measuring your blood pressure and other simple tests such as an electrocardiogram or an echocardiogram can pinpoint whether your heart is the source of your weariness.

3.

There's been an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency over the last few decades because we've been avoiding the sun. Too little of this essential vitamin can sap your bone strength, and some research links a deficiency of vitamin D to chronic fatigue syndrome. A blood test can determine whether you're getting enough of your daily D. If not, a supplement can get you to the amount you need each day. The Institute of Medicine, which published new guidelines in 2010, recommends that most adults get 600 international units a day. Have You Lost That Loving Feeling? By Mary South, MD

SEX AND YOUR PELVIC FLOOR

As Valentine’s Day approaches or a special occassion, we may find ourselves, or our partners, in a more amorous mood. Quite frankly, sexual intercourse or being intimate with your partner is a very important way for a couple to connect and to feel close. However, some women tell me that they have lost some of the sensation they used to experience during sex or that they feel they are “too loose” after giving birth to their children. Some even say that they find it harder and harder to achieve an orgasm. One of the reasons for these complaints can be attributed to the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles, which are also known as the levator ani muscles or to most women as “Kegel muscles”, can become weakened during pregnancy and childbirth, after pelvic surgery (i.e. hysterectomy) and even secondary to decreased physical activity and aging. When pelvic floor muscles are weak, some women experience decreased sensation during sex and a decreased sexual response. In addition, weakened pelvic floor muscles are more prone to spasm which can result in significant pain during sex. So, doing your Kegel exercises is important to strengthen your muscles and keep them healthy. Just like strengthening your biceps with bicep curls, repetitively squeezing and relaxing your pelvic floor muscles results in increased strength. In order to identify the Kegel muscles, I usually tell women to imagine they are trying to hold back gas in a crowded elevator…slightly embarrassing and crude, I know, but most people can relate. I also suggest that if you are squeezing your buttocks, your thighs or your abs, you are not isolating the Kegel muscles. (A trained pelvic floor physical therapist can also assist you if you can’t seem to identify the correct muscles to squeeze.) Once you know what you need to squeeze, the rule of thumb or “goal”, is to hold the squeeze for 10 second, relax for 10 seconds and repeat 8-10 times. This cycle should

be done three times per day. Some women will find they can’t hold the squeeze that long, so working up to that from your baseline is usually a good idea. You don’t want to tire those muscles out if you really are in an elevator and need to refrain from passing gas! Women who have worked to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles report increased sensation during sex. Others state they have been able to achieve climax for the first time in years. So in preparation for Valentine’s Day, or if you are not one to celebrate Hallmark Holidays but just want to enjoy sex more…work those muscles!

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes of the seasons with symptoms starting in the fall and continuing into the winter months. It’s often referred to as the “winter blues” and will sap your energy and make you feel moody. It can also lead to sleep problems caused by a disruption of the circadian rhythms (your body’s clock) due to reduced sunlight during the day. This also causes a drop in serotonin levels which are our mood boosters, and melatonin levels which help us to sleep. Research suggests that symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression may be positively affected with massage therapy. You can boost your mood and increase your serotonin and melatonin levels with regular massage therapy session. Studies have shown that massage: • Increases neurotransmitters associated with lowering anxiety and reducing depression with a course of care providing benefits similar in magnitude to those of psychotherapy. • Significantly decreases heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. • Massage has been shown to reduce depression in individuals with HIV, lessen anxiety in cancer patients, reduce anxiety and depression in military veterans and lower work-related stress for nurses.

Aromatherapy can be used during your massage and is also helpful in controlling the symptoms of SAD. Smells from essential oils can stimulate positive emotions by affecting our limbic system. The essential oils that treat the symptoms of SAD best include Basil, Orange, Sandalwood, Lemon, Jasmine, Sage, Chamomile, and Peppermint. For those dreading the remaining winter months, don’t wait to take control of your symptoms, start today!

Don‛t Let Your Bladder Control Your Life! Most women think many of their women’s health issues are just “normal” or a part of aging and they don’t realize there are very effective treatment options available to them. In fact, only about 50% even report their symptoms. The reality is that 1 in 3 women will likely be affected by urinary incontinence at some point in their lives. There are conservative treatment options available that can help improve your quality of life and end the nuisance and embarrassment. Studies have shown up to a 70% improvement in urinary incontinence across all age groups following an appropriately performed pelvic floor strengthening program. So then your next thought may be to just “Do my Kegels.” Well if it were only that simple the problem likely wouldn’t be so vast. Did you know that… 50% of women do not correctly contract their pelvic floor muscles By Meghan Graf

Sometimes just “doing your Kegels” can actually make your problem worse You owe it to yourself to let a physical therapist trained in pelvic floor dysfunction, evaluate you using a gentle approach (without speculums) to tailor a program specific to your needs and abilities. 10

SHE FEELS BEAUTIFUL AGAIN! By Cindy Marx; Practice Manager, Raj Plastic Surgery Can you imagine losing 140 pounds? That’s a whole person! Well, Mandy did it and boy is she happy with herself! After a tough talk by her primary care physician about health risks associated with obesity, Mandy decided to take the time from her busy life raising her children and working to do something about her poor eating habits and lack of exercise. Through a commitment to making better food choices and exercise she reached her goal weight and was able to keep the pounds at bay – but hiding under her clothes was her “secret” – her hanging skin after she shed her fat. Mandy’s reward to herself for maintaining her new lifestyle was plastic surgery to remove her excess abdominal skin. She visited with Dr. Joyesh Raj who explained that the best results could be accomplished with a fleur de lis abdominoplasty. A traditional abdominoplasty involves a horizontal incision from hip to hip, a fleur de lis abdominoplasty is commonly used for massive weight loss patients. The surgery adds an additional vertical incision of the abdomen to help pull the skin tighter from the sides. Check out the before and after pictures: skinny Mandy was hiding behind the folds of skin. Mandy states that her skin reduction surgery changed her world. She no longer hides under bulky clothing hiding her “secret” skin. She feels feminine again and is happy to show off her new figure in form fitting clothes. MEDINA COUNTY

a Print & Digital Community Magazine In the months of February and March, we celebrate Black History and Women’s History, respectively. In addition, February is Heart Health Awareness and we have important information regarding our hearts! And as we celebrate our 13th anniversary, we are excited about the demand for print magazines. Women continue to prefer a print magazine over a digital one. There is something about holding it in your hand, folding it, rolling it, just open and read. We are proud to be the FIRST women’s educational magazine in Northeast Ohio. The Women’s Journal looks forward to our 13th year of educating and empowering our readers as well as giving local businesses a venue to highlight their services and products through informative articles. We also encourage you to “like” us on Facebook and “follow” us on Twitter. We appreciate the loyalty of our advertisers, such as Theraputic Associates of Medina, Skin Care Solutions, Last Diet, PetalSweet Cleaning and many others, who make it possible each issue to provide a free magazine to readers and offer advertising grants to local non-profit charitable organizations. Without our advertisers and our readers, we would no longer have a purpose. We thank you for giving us a purpose every day. Each year we confirm our mission: To Empower Women Through Knowledge. Create A Peaceful & Healthy Sleeping Environment

THE KRONHEIMS PROMISE:

If you find the same furniture or bedding for LESS anywhere in Northeast Ohio, Kronheims will beat the price or it’s FREE.

It is easy to overlook the benefits of a good night's sleep. Without adequate rest a person can be left feeling irritable, distracted and sluggish. Those who repeatedly do not get enough sleep could be facing other health problems as well. For some, the secret to getting a better sleep is modifying their sleeping environment. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate insufficient sleep has become a public health epidemic. An estimated 50 to 70 million American adults report having a sleep or wakefulness disorder, and women are twice as likely to suffer from insomnia than men. Plus, one in three people suffer from some form of insomnia during their lifetime, offers the organization Better Sleep for Life. In some instances, lack of sleep or too much sleep might be indicative of a medical condition, but it could just be related to poor sleep hygiene and an uncomfortable sleeping environment. Making some changes could make all the difference. • Start with your mattress. You will spend between seven to 10 hours in your bed each and every night. An uncomfortable mattress could be an underlying factor in your sleep problems. If your bed is several years old, it could pay to invest in a new mattress and box spring. If you sleep with your spouse and your bed is too small, upgrading to a larger size could provide the room you need. If you cannot afford a new mattress, buying a mattress topper in memory foam could mask any problems for the time being. • Balance light and dark. In order to trigger sleepiness at the right time, it is essential to get at least 30 minutes of natural sunlight each day during the morning or afternoon. In the evening, begin dimming the lights to trigger the body's natural internal clock and stimulate the production of the natural hormone melatonin, which relaxes the body into sleep. Keep a dark bedroom -- invest in blackout curtains if need be. • Consider white noise. Giving your brain a noise to associate with relaxing sleep can help you drift off more quickly. White noise can also mask other sounds that may distract sleep, such as traffic outside or a partner snoring. White noise can come from a special alarm clock that provides soothing sounds of rain or waves. Many people find running a fan in the bedroom provides the right amount of noise and also helps circulate air throughout the room. • Make the bedroom a cozy retreat. Your bedroom should be a relaxing sanctuary. Fill it with cozy cushions and pillows. Make sure the room is clean and clutter-free. Relaxing blues and purples can be soothing colors to use in decorating, and the use of lavender essential oil could also add to the relaxing environment. • Avoid distractions. When setting up your bedroom, do not fill it with electronics, such as a computer, tablet and television. These devices could contribute to wakefulness and actually impede your ability to get the rest you need. • Keep cool. A cool bedroom is key to drifting off to sleep. Sweating and overheating can keep you awake, so drop the temperature down at night and dress lightly for bed. You want to feel comfortable and not too hot or cold. If sleeplessness becomes a chronic problem and is not alleviated by changing the sleeping environment, visit a doctor.

Prepare for Spring Cleaning

Winter is almost over—time to heave a sigh of relief and enjoy not seeing your breath in the air. If you hope to spend the coming nice days outside instead of stuck indoors doing seasonal tidying chores, start sprucing up your house early! As things thaw out, here are a few easy to-dos to knock off your list now … and avoid a spring cleaning meltdown later. ON-TRACK WINDOWS Northeast Ohioans know better than to put in screens on the first warm spring day. But when reliably balmy temperatures finally arrive, enjoy the weather while maintaining your windows. To ensure easy up-and-down sliding action, clean out window tracks with a vacuum attachment and/or narrow wood strip to remove accumulated dust and dirt. Follow up by spraying the inside of each track with a non-oily silicone lubricant to maintain your efforts. MINIMAL MUD April showers bring May flowers, but before that everyone just tracks in a lot of brown goop. If kids, pets, or whoever end up getting mud on clothes or furniture, these tips can help get rid of it: First, sometimes it helps to fight the urge to immediately scrub wet splotches—you can end up spreading the mess around instead. If mud is a thick layer, let it dry into dirt if you can. Then scrape it off with a flat knife until you get to the base of the stain. Give garments a soak in detergent mixed with water before proceeding with normal wash instructions; in the case of furniture, blot with a small amount of upholstery cleaner, then rinse, until the stain lifts.

FANS AND REGISTERS Clean up these two crucial summertime

appliances before the hot months hit. Ceiling fan blades collect hardto-see layers of buildup…it becomes easier to notice when the fan is on high and stuff flies all over the room. Specialized pole dusters are available, but if you don’t have one of those, try sliding a pillowcase over each blade to contain the fallout. For deeper cleaning, moisten a cloth in vinegar solution and wipe to gently remove grime (just remember to dry blades afterwards). Another frequently unnoticed dusty spot - look up - exhaust fans in your bathroom or registers. Most can be easily removed to wash or use vacuum with attachments.

Kitchen, Bath, & Lighting Showrooms DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF A KOHLER STEAM SHOWER: Healthy Skin The heat generated from a steam shower will help you sweat, which naturally pushes out dirt and toxins to clean your pores.

Relaxed Muscles The heat from the steam helps to dilate your blood vessels, increasing blood circulation. More oxygen for your muscles, helps them to relax and soothes minor aches and pains. Breathe Easy Steam showers have been shown to open up nasal passages and can help alleviate respiratory congestion and sinus inflammation.

Stress Relief There are few things more relaxing then being

enveloped in the warm, soothing mist of a steam shower. It’s the perfect way to start your day or unwind from the daily grind.

o o d r Air Quali n I e v o r p Im ty In During those dreary winter months, marked by cold weather people tend to spend significantly more time indoors. Because windows tend to be closed during winter, indoor air quality can suffer, making conditions inside a home less than desirable. According to the American Lung Association, poor air circulation in a home can promote the spread of bacteria and viruses. Once such bacteria or viruses are inhaled, coughs, colds and flu can spread. In addition, asthma and allergy sufferers may experience worsening symptoms thanks to the presence of endotoxins, which are substances that come from the broken-down cells of dead bacteria. Because many people spend significantly more time indoors during winter than other times of the year, it's essential that they take measures to improve indoor air quality in the months ahead.

• CUT BACK ON CHEMICALS. It's ideal to avoid heavy chemical usage inside

a home throughout the year, but it's especially important to do so during winter. Solvent-based cleaners or cleaning products with strong fragrances can negatively affect indoor air quality and potentially trigger allergic reactions. In lieu of chemically-enhanced cleaning products, use natural products that get the job done without sacrificing indoor air quality.

• STOP SMOKING INDOORS. Tobacco smoke can affect smokers and nonsmokers

alike. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that secondhand smoke causes numerous health problems in infants and children. Those

Winter

include more frequent and severe asthma attacks and respiratory infections. In addition, reports from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have linked secondhand smoke to an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Adults exposed to secondhand smoke are at greater risk for coronary heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of pollutants that can greatly diminish indoor air quality, so make sure smokers limit their smoking to outside the home throughout the year, but especially during winter.

• TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES WHEN ENTERING THE HOME.

Snowy conditions often require a home's inhabitants and guests to remove their footwear upon entering a home, but it helps to remove footwear in a mudroom or just inside the front door when entering a home even when it's not snowing. Shoes can pick up dirt, dust and a host of other particles during winter, and if tracked inside those unwanted guests can negatively affect indoor air quality.

• ROUTINELY INSPECT BATHROOMS FOR MOLD. During winter, mold can grow

in rooms that are exposed to moisture but not properly ventilated. In many homes, that's the bathroom. Even if a bathroom has a ventilation fan, routinely inspect the ceiling and shower for mold growth. Exposure to mold can cause a host of negative side effects, including nasal and sinus congestion and sore throat. Mold also can exacerbate asthma symptoms. Improving and maintaining indoor air quality in winter can help a home's inhabitants stay healthy during the colder months. Read The Women’s Journal at www.womens-journal.com

How the hCG Protocol Works for Weight Loss Our protocol, we like to refrain from using diet, as this a more of a protocol than diet, is based solely on Dr. Simeons Manuscript called "Pounds and Inches". He found that the naturally occurring hormone called hCG helps the body to "release fat stores of 2,000 to 4,000 calories per day into the bloodstream which allows participants to stay on a very low calorie protocol without experiencing hunger, fatigue, or weakness." The result is rapid weight loss without the potentially dangerous side-effects of other cleanses, fasts, and extreme diets. The Last Diet Ever uses hCG treatments in conjunction with calorie restriction to help participants achieve their desired weight loss goals. However, lifestyle guidance is also provided to ensure that participants are getting the support they need, before, during and after the protocol. The professional staff at this local weight loss center includes Medical Director, Susan Graham, M.D.; Dawn Boyle, CNP, Nurse Practitioner, who approves patients for the protocol; Sandy Del Regno, RN; and Paula Weisenberger, Office Manager. Both Sandy and Paula have done the protocol and have kept the weight off Sandy for more than 4 years and Paula for more than 6 years. Contact them today for a complimentary evaluation. Everyone Is Taking Fish Oil...Do You Recommend It? You’re absolutely right—fish oil is becoming very popular, and for good reason. There are a number of heart-health benefits associated with this supplement and, if experts had to choose between fish oil supplementation and a daily multivitamin/ mineral, more and more would probably steer you toward fish oil. First of all, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are generally considered anti-inflammatory, while omega-6 fatty acids are considered pro-inflammatory. In addition, omega-3’s have been shown to lower triglycerides levels, reduce heart attack and stroke risk, slow the build-up of artery plagues, and slightly lower blood pressure. And if that’s not enough, they have also been studied extensively for their neuroprotective effects related to Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and depression. If you decide to supplement with fish oil, typical dosages start at 1,000mg of EPA and DHA (the two prominent fatty acids) per day. Valentine's Day is a time when men and women express their love and affection for one another, which can be accomplished in a variety of ways. For many celebrants, food and beverages are part of the festivities. According to the USDA and Gallup, in the United States Valentine's Day is the bubbliest occasion after New Year's Eve and Thanksgiving. That's because around $9 million is spent on sparkling wine products. What pairs well with that bubbly? Why chocolate, of course. Fifty-eight million pounds of chocolate candy is purchased during the week of Valentine's Day, when the National Confectioners Association says 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold. 18

Saint Patrick may have not been Irish, but millions of other people are. According to the travel resource WalletHub and the most recent U.S. Census Bureau data, 33.3 million people in the United States claim Irish ancestry. That's around seven times greater than the entire population of Ireland. The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in Boston in 1737, and New York City's St. Patrick's Day Parade is perhaps the largest and best-known parade for Saint Patrick. What's more, Saint Patrick's given name wasn't Patrick. His "real" (Brythonic) name was Maewyn Succat, according to Irish legend. But Maewyn Succat Day just doesn't have the same ring to it as St. Patrick's Day.

Financial Wellbeing Can Affect Your Health The word “health” takes on many forms. Most often we associate “health” with our physical wellbeing by asking ourselves are we sick or are we well.  The World Health Organization defines health as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” I may be biased, but financial wellbeing is as much a factor of overall health as your physical condition.  Just like prevention is the best medicine, let’s dive into four factors that impact women’s financial health. 1. Women live an average of 2.3 years longer than men. This means women need more savings to sustain their retirement. 2. Women earn less than men. While this gap is closing, lower wages means women will earn about 2/3 what men will. Save early and often. 3. Women are more likely to face gaps in employment. Family planning sometimes requires that women put their careers on hold. 4. Women pay more for healthcare. With higher average annual health costs, its likely women will need to tap into resources meant for retirement. Treat the above as merely risk factors that can easily be overcome when planning for retirement. With the help of trusted financial advisor, you will have sound strategies to manage risk, not fear it. The outcome is a secure retirement and financial fitness!

Are You Overwhelmed Selecting an Assisted Living Facility? You have made the decision that an assisted living facility is the right choice. The process can be overwhelming. Linda Fodrini-Johnson, president of National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, suggests to “reflect on what is most valuable in your or your loved one's life. What gives your life purpose and meaning?” She suggests asking the following questions: • Is the assisted living facility near the things and people you hold dear? Think about where your doctors, your church, your children, and grandchildren are located. • What are the levels of care offered? List your current and future needs. • Is the facility licensed to ensure it meets your state's assisted living regulations? To find the appropriate agency in your state, start by searching Eldercare.gov and drilling down by Zip code. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau to find out if there are complaints against the assisted living facility you're interested in. How do you find referrals? Contact your local agency on aging or a geriatric care manger to find out if they can provide a list of facilities they'd recommend in your area. Looking for the Right Attorney?

WHAT IS ELDER LAW? By Attorney Ann Salek, Ohio State Bar Association Certified In Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law Traditionally, as people aged, their legal concerns were generally limited to planning for their estate when they die. In other words, who should get what and figure out the easiest way to get them what you want them to have. The practice of Elder Law certainly still involves estate planning, trust and probate. However, as people are living longer, their legal concerns are no longer limited to “what happens when I die?” More issues have arisen by the question of “what happens if I don’t die?” Of course the one surety in life is that you will die. However, according to data compiled by the Social Security Administration:

A Man reaching age 65 today can expect to live, on average, until age 84.3. A Woman turning age 65 today can expect to live, on average, until age 86.6. And those are just averages. About one out of every four 65-year-olds today will live past age 90, and one out of 10 will live past age 95. With living longer, comes additional legal issues. Elder law attorneys need to advise clients regarding long term care planning. This includes financial issues pertaining to how to pay for long term care and whether lifetime savings can be protected from having to be depleted to pay for long term care. Planning discussions include long term care insurance, privately self-insuring to pay for long term care, obtaining Medicaid benefits, or obtaining Veterans Aid and Attendance benefits to pay for long term care. Along with the financial aspects of living longer, elder law attorneys need to advise clients regarding the mental capacity aspect of living longer. What if the client no longer has mental capacity to make decisions, handle their finances, administer their health care? These areas involve powers of attorney and potentially guardianships. The Elder Law attorney also needs to be well-versed in dealing with the children or other family members of the elderly. Oftentimes, the elderly client may not even realize they need legal advice. The elderly client’s children are often quite involved in this planning process

to assist their parents. However, this can cause considerable issues surrounding who is the client and who is the attorney representing. This is all part of the practice of Elder Law. Elder Law attorneys also get involved in Medicare and other government benefits; abuse, neglect, and exploitation issues. Another topic that has become important in many Elder Law practices is special needs planning. This type of planning does not necessarily involve the elderly but rather children and adults with disabilities. The Elder Law attorney often works with special needs planning because many of the common legal problems of the elderly are shared by younger clients who may be disabled. It is important to note that traditional estate planning, trust and probate attorneys are not necessarily well versed in many issues particular to what has become the practice of Elder Law. Long term care planning can be very cumbersome and complicated so clients should really search for the attorney with experience in the practice of Elder Law. Critchfield, Critchfield & Johnston is unique among law firms in the entire United States, possessing in our five smaller cities capabilities and sophistication typically found only in major metropolitan areas. However, we provide that superior work at rates considerably below those charged by law firms in those metro areas. Superior client service, performed promptly, at a reasonable cost, and with the highest ethical standards. Friendly and courteous people, eager to do their best for the client. This defines Why CCJ.

Printed material leaves a deeper footprint in the brain. Print triggers greater emotional processing in the brain. Why “Women’s History”? Women’s contributions and accomplishments for the most part have been overlooked and consequently omitted from mainstream culture. The National Women’s History Museum will help fill that void. Rather than rewriting current exhibitions at other history museums or having to decide what to omit elsewhere to “fit in” women’s history, the NWHM will serve to place women’s history along side current historical exhibitions. Women’s history isn’t meant to rewrite history. The objective is to promote scholarship and expand our knowledge of American history. “I was not tired physically… No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” - Rosa Parks, civil rights activist “Walk the street with us into history. Get off the sidewalk.” - Dolores Huerta, labor leader and civil rights activist

breadth of women’s experiences and accomplishments to the widest possible audience. The sharing of this knowledge will illuminate and encourage women and men, people of all classes, races and cultures to move into the future with respect, equal confidence, greater partnership, and opportunity. “A better world awaits the generation that absorbs what women and men have to share about life from a joint perspective. Together, all things are possible.” - Karen Staser, Founder, National Women’s History Museum

You can reach the Museum at 703-461-1920 or email at [email protected]. Visit the www.nwhm.org Education and Resources Page For: Biographies, Lesson Plans, Videos, and Much More!

“Failure is impossible.” - Susan B. Anthony, suffrage leader and social reformer “Without courage we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency.” - Maya Angelou, poet and author “There is no life that does not contribute to history.” - Dorothy West, novelist

Vision The National Women’s History Museum’s vision is to build a world-class museum at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The National Women’s History Museum currently raises awareness and honors women’s diverse experiences and achievements through its dynamic online museum, educational programs, scholarship and research. Once housed prominently among the other great museums of Washington, D.C., it will create better understanding and greater partnerships among men and women. The National Women’s History Museum will be the first museum in any nation’s capital to show the full scope of the history of its women and will serve as a guiding light to people everywhere.

What We Do The Museum researches, collects and exhibits the contributions of women to the social, cultural, economic and political life of our nation in a context of world history. The museum will use innovative and engaging means including permanent and online exhibits, educational programs, and outreach efforts to communicate the 28

Larry and Susan Jarvis began their work at Medina County Jail as chaplains in l992. They have counseled, taught, and preached the message of God’s redemptive love to thousands of inmates through these past twenty-five years. In l999, the ministry expanded to include working with teens at the county’s Juvenile Detention Center. As head chaplains, there is never a dull moment. Susan Jarvis likes to tell people that God allows us to help people “from the cradle to the grave.” The couple has trained and overseen volunteers from various churches in the county. Susan has been

thrilled to be a birth coach twice. The couple has participated in weddings, made hospital visits, visited inmates in prisons, and sadly, given the funeral messages when a former inmate passes away. Then in 2003, frustrated by the lack of help in our area for released inmates, the Jarvises took the steps necessary to start a small home for women needing a fresh start in life. God provided the funding to purchase the house! First with a gift of half the purchase price from Margaret Peak and then completed by generous gifts from concerned Christians in the community. Appropriately called,

“Margaret House,” this Christian home has provided a haven for well over 150 women since opening its doors. So this April 25th, Medina Light Ministries is pleased to invite the public to celebrate God’s faithfulness in allowing Larry and Susan to work with the justice system in Medina County since 1992. The event at Williams on the Lake will include a buffet dinner, music, and testimonies along with a short message by speaker, author, and pastor, Daniel Jarvis, who worked with his parents, Larry and Susan for eighteen of the twenty-five years.

HOW TO STREAM oWOW ANYWHERE, ANYTIME. If you can get Pandora or Spotify, you can get oWOW. If you haven't experienced oWOW yet, here's how to get it at work, at home and on-the-go. If you are connected to the Internet, you can hear oWOW. Listening to oWOW burns less data and battery power than Pandora, Spotify, and iHeartRadio. (In other words, it's safe for work.) If you are on a PC, go to the oWOW web site at www.oWOWnow.com. The player will automatically start. If you are using a mobile device, go to your app store, download and install the FREE oWOW App. Search “oWOW” or “oWOW Cleveland.” There are several methods to stream oWOW from

mobile devices to your vehicle’s radio. The most common is to stream oWOW from a smartphone or other mobile device by using Bluetooth technology. oWOW streaming will not challenge your data plan. Streaming oWOW burns less data and battery power. Unlike Pandora, Spotify and radio station portals iHeart Radio (Clear Channel), and Radio.com (CBS Radio), oWOW does NOT retrieve personal data from your smartphone while you’re streaming. Best of all, it's locally owned, locally operated, locally programmed, and live (including live airstaff 9AM-9PM). No corporate playlists. No syndicated programming. Experience oWOW now!
