From the Board Glenn Summer

My wife Bonnie and I joined Temple Judea nearly 12 years ago when we got married.  We’re both shy and didn’t make a lot of friends early on, so like many members at times we considered leaving.  Instead, a full nine years in we decided to double down and make a greater effort to say “Hello” to fellow members.  Long story short, we made lots more friends, and now I’m even on the Board of Trustees. This history of going from almost leaving to becoming more involved also got me interested in studying the results of the Union for Reform Judaism survey sent out earlier this year to help uncover motivations and barriers to sustained belonging.  A special thank you to those in our congregation who answered the survey.  Leaders from Temple Judea and congregations across Southern California met in November to discuss results. Below is just some of what was learned, and a few action steps being planned and considered.  We’re happy to discuss the survey further with anyone interested. • Attracting and retaining members continues to be a challenge across congregations. • People join for a variety of reasons, but it is a connection to clergy or other members that get people to stay. To strengthen connections, some congregations are going beyond traditional programs to also focus on smaller, more personal gatherings, like one-on-one coffees and home meetings. • Not surprisingly, some who join primarily to help educate their children are some of the least connected, especially members with children in high school. While “drop off parents” with less desire to engage exist, there are plenty who would connect more strongly under the right circumstances.  Temples must do a better job of making both kids and their parents feel connected throughout years of membership.  • A majority state that dues are a good value, but many temple members throughout Southern California are also facing increasing financial pressures.  The URJ plans to study and share results from the rest of the country, and over time, to see if different dues structures have an impact on these feelings. • While most feel their temples are well governed, a vocal minority feel their temples can do a better job with inclusion and transparency. The URJ shared some communication strategies that Temple Judea is planning to implement to help ease any concerns among our own members. We’re continuing to study the results, and will keep working hard to strengthen our community, but don’t forget, you have a role in this, too.  We love ideas, we love conversations, and it can all start by saying “Hello.”

Praying in Harmony Cantor Yonah Kliger

YonahKliger

“Praying is like playing jazz. You can play alone, but exciting things happen in sessions with other musicians, especially if you’ve played with them before . . . Sometimes we all pray in harmony, other times we pray at our own rhythm, at our own volume. Jewish tradition explores the inner Jewish meaning of the words through interpretation, and ancient sacred texts stay alive when each generation re-interprets them.” - Rabbi Levi Weinman-Kelman, An Introduction to Prayer, 1987

I

f you think about it, Rabbi Weinman-Kelman is really on to something. When we pray in temple, we use the fixed words from our liturgy. The written prayers are like musical notes on a page. But, sometimes our hearts and minds stray from what is in the prayer book, and we create our own personal prayers. We improvise a prayer on the spot, reflecting what we feel inside. Similarly, a jazz musician begins a piece of music with the notes actually written on the page, and then takes off on a musical journey -- expressing a personal connection to the music -- perhaps asking, “How can I make this music relevant to me?” Exploring the ins and the outs of the melody, harmony and rhythm, the musician eventually finds a way back to the printed music. And we eventually, land firmly back to the words of prayer. Think about a moment in your life when a piece of music has really touched your soul. These moments take us back in time and to the deep recesses of our souls. This month we will celebrate Shabbat Shirah, the Shabbat of Song. As the Children of Israel approached the Sea of Reeds, you can

[email protected]

only imagine their fear, as they stood with the sea wall in front of them, and the Egyptians chasing them from behind. But then, the sea splits, and they walk through bursting into song, singing for their freedom and wonder of the miracle. Victor Hugo wrote, “Music expresses that which cannot be said, and on which it is impossible to be silent.” By way of music, our souls are capable of reaching beyond ourselves, beyond our limitations of words. With music, we can reach back in time, to an experience not our own, but yet, make it our own. With music, we can harmonize with the past. With music, a room full of strangers can experience the beauty of community.” To celebrate Shabbat Shira this year, we will be hosting Cantor Jack Mendelson who will be performing his exquisite one-man show, “The Cantors Couch,” on January 21. Cantor Mendelson, while being one of the greatest cantors and teachers of cantors of our generation, is also one of the funniest storytellers I know. His performance will touch your heart, stir your soul and tickle your funny bone.

Parenting Center

Margie Ipp - Director of ECC Lisa Whitman - Assistant Director of ECC As the holidays approached this year, advertisements poured in from every direction to tell parents of young children what the best gifts would be. Parents wondered if they should buy wooden toys, technological toys, vintage toys or educational toys. Our ECC children received many exciting gifts. Now that gift buying season is over, and we all have a moment to slow down, we have the ultimate gift recommendation for you, and it’s free! Are you ready? The most powerful gift you can give your children all year long is the gift of TIME. We aren’t just talking about time with you, although that is important. Time with parents is precious and any time you can give to directly interact with your children is time well spent. What we are really talking about is time that doesn’t directly involve you, except as a provider and a guardian – free time, down time, and play time. Your children need time to explore, time to play, time to think, time to be bored, time to look at the world in all its infinite detail. It seems like an easy gift to give, but in the mad rush of life, sometimes it’s hard to find the time to give. It may feel like a waste of time for children to play with a cardboard box or stare at a roly poly bug on the sidewalk when they could be in an organized class or activity. It may feel like a waste of time for a child to struggle to solve a puzzle when we could show them how to do it quickly. But unencumbered time for these kinds of activities is the basis of all learning. Our children interact with time in completely different ways than we do

3

TempleJudeaECC

So how do you give this gift to your children? Try to slow down and leave as much open time in your day as possible. Try to respect that what might look like a “waste of time” could actually be time well spent. Imagine the synapses forming in those little brains as they experience the world in ways we can hardly understand. Instead of teaching them that the way to get through a day is to rush and pack in as many things as possible in order to not waste time, teach them to slow down, enjoy every moment, and make time precious. Now that’s a gift!

New Religious School Hebrew & Prayer Program Rabbi Bruce Raff - Director of Education

Hebrew reading and developing prayer skills are linked in our school. Our students learn to read Hebrew with the purpose of learning how to read prayers.

Here is what we expect and are working towards with the students in our school in terms of the prayers in our school curriculum. Our students will:

What processes do we have in place to help them learn to read?

1. Learn how to read the prayers.

This year, our 2nd and 3rd graders have been introduced to Hebrew letters and taught to recognize them. Our 4th and 5th graders work with their Hebrew teachers (the third hour of their day) to learn to master the letters, vowels and how to blend them together to form and read words. Our 6th graders have been placed in cross grade level Hebrew groups, based on a diagnostic they were given earlier this year, which allows them to study with students with similar knowledge.

2. Be able to chant the prayers.

In addition to classroom and tutoring, all students in grades 4-5 have access to an online Hebrew component; students can practice on an app they should download onto their phones, or tablets, or that they can access on their computers. They can practice what they are learning in class, and they can be monitored by their teachers.

3. Recognize certain key words and what they mean (we have highlighted them in Hebrew and in English in the new siddur we have created for all of our 4th to 6th grade families). 4. Understand the meaning of the prayer. 5. Demonstrate the choreography of the prayer. 6. Be able to pass the “drop them in a synagogue on Mars blindfolded test” (do they understand the context of the prayer and where it fits in terms of services). Our program is new. It will be fluid and students will move from group to group. We invite your input and feedback.

Repair The World Hi parents, I just wanted to let you know how awesome it was to spend the afternoon with your children. They are truly a bright, engaged, and talented group. They made these amazing capes for us to give to young children who are living in transitional housing. While they were working on the capes, we had discussions about all of the ways that we can give and about “praying with our feet.” I challenged the group to begin next week with their eyes wide open looking for opportunities to help make the world better in small daily things: helping an elderly neighbor with trash cans, mowing a lawn, keeping their school campus free of litter, recycling, standing up for someone who is being bullied or excluded. We confronted some myths and misgivings about what homelessness is and how homelessness affects our entire community. We particularly focused on homelessness’ effect on children. Often their schooling is interrupted, they are ill more often than children in a stable home, they can battle depression, anxiety, and fear. Your children’s responses about ways to comfort and allay fears were moving. They channeled their ideas into the art on the capes they created. Our next meet-up will be to deliver all of the capes and write stories with the youngsters. I will have location and directions sent out to you soon and I can help to organize carpools. As always, please feel free to contact me by phone/text/email with any of your questions, concerns, or suggestions, Dawn Ailetcher [email protected] 4

A Big Todah Rabah To Our TJ Community

Eileen Aroesti, Director of Development

On Yom Kippur, we asked our community to look inside for atonement and beyond for Tzedakah as it is written that during this time we shall follow the practice of T’Shuvah, T’Filiah and Tzedakah. Our community heard the sound of the shofar and the words of Rabbi Aaronson as they answered the call by participating in the High Holy Day Appeal in greater numbers and larger dollars than we have experienced in many years. We are grateful to everyone.

Caring Across Generations Marsha Novak Our Caring Across Generations Faith-based Los Angeles Alliance currently consists of 14 members from seven faith traditions, caregiver organizations and social justice advocates. In December, we held our 15th educational workshop and have future workshops planned and scheduled through the end of 2018. Our advocacy work includes legislative visits advocating for caregivers as well as for California healthcare for all, including universal long-term health care insurance. Please join us as we celebrate our past successes and future endeavors and to view the acclaimed documentary, “Care”, by Deirdre Fishel and Tony Heriza. This important film pulls back the curtain on the poignant and largely hidden world of in-home elder care. Beautifully shot and deeply moving, the film reveals the intimate bonds that form between paid care workers, elders, and their families, exposing cracks in a system that is failing too many. This documentary is an important new tool that can help communities to cut through divisive rhetoric and support conversations about solutions that leave no one behind.

JANUARY 21, 2018 2-4:30pm Temple Beth Hillel, 12326 Riverside Drive, Valley Village 2pm: Pre-screening fellowship, vegetarian small bites (halal/kosher) + wine and non-alcoholic drinks. 3pm: “CARE” showing followed by discussion. This event is free; please bring family and friends. RSVP to Marsha Novak: [email protected]

Brotherhood Anthony Gluck and David Daniel, Co-Presidents Brotherhood is busier than ever, feeding stomachs and souls -- and tickling more than a few funny bones! We were proud to return to the Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, where we sponsored tables and helped serve Thanksgiving dinner to more than 1,500 homeless people. Of course, we’re always serving up food and fun at Temple Judea, from the Chanukah Boutique and Chanukahpalooza to our annual Pancake Breakfast on December 25. Join us in 2018 for even more good times! Our Speaker Series continues with our 2nd annual Oscars Preview, we’re planning a poker tournament with WTJ and our next Tasting Series event, we’ll be volunteering regularly at Hope of the Valley’s Genesis House, and big plans are in the works for the spring Men’s Retreat. Of course, our monthly poker games and biweekly Lunch Bunch continue! If any (or all!) of this sounds good to you, attend one of our monthly meetings or email [email protected] to get involved!

Women of Temple Judea

Aime Friedman, President

We brought 2017 to a successful close with some wonderful programs that entertained us and brought us together as a community. In October, we held our annual membership event featuring Stephanie Blum, a truly talented comedian. We laughed so hard that our sides ached. It was a great way to say welcome to all of our new and returning WTJ members. November began with our annual Mah Jongg tournament. Once again, we showed how we can come together as a community to create a beautiful event. It’s a great feeling to work together like a well-oiled machine, whether it’s making kugel, serving tuna salad, or packaging up bagels, every task is important and every effort appreciated.

WTJ kicked off our annual three-part speaker series, a joint project with Brotherhood, with a program featuring California State Senator Henry Stern, who spoke to us on a variety of topics. Our next speaker event will be Academy Awards Preview on February 20. We ended the year with our annual Chanukah Boutique, this year teaming up with the ECC to create a bigger, more exciting holiday shopping experience. Thank you to Brotherhood for providing a delicious barbecue dinner, an extra special touch! Our wildly popular annual bingo night with Bingo Boy and special guest Roxy is scheduled for February 6. Stay tuned for more info. And get involved!

We prepared for Thanksgiving with a Women’s Mini Retreat in late November which explored the theme of gratitude. Jennifer Burton, LMFT, helped us find our resiliency zone, and Sheila Linderman taught us how to roll sweet potatoes into a tamale (recipe available upon request). Rabbi Cantor Alison Wissot led the afternoon and evening, striking a perfect chord of spirituality, fun, creativity and relaxation. Mark your calendars for our two-day women’s retreat on April 27-29, 2018. Details will be announced soon.

Social Action - Great Partnership for Mitzvah Day! Jennifer Lutzky This year, the Social Action Committee joined forces with our Religious School to host Mitzvah Day for the entire congregation. Students from each grade level created posters explaining the specific Jewish value they are learning for the year, and Social Action provided activities to benefit multiple community organizations.  Students explored each other’s posters to learn about every grade’s project, and also participated hands-on to help others. Some of the values included welcoming guests, caring for animals, caring for the environment, respecting differences, feeding the hungry, respecting the elderly, loving Israel and caring for the stranger.  Students had activity tables where they decorated grocery bags for Project Chicken Soup meal deliveries, wrote letters to soldiers overseas for Operation Gratitude, decorated shade structure panels for Jewish World Watch, and made snack bags for Hope of the Valley Mission.  We also decorated meal boxes for the ECC Thanksgiving Market.  The morning was capped off by a terrific concert upstairs in the sanctuary. Many thanks to the Brotherhood (and several volunteers from Women of Temple Judea, and Charlie Kramer) for a delicious breakfast to start off our morning!   For more information about Mitzvah Day or other Social Action programs, please visit our website or email Jennifer at [email protected].

Social Justice Harry Sherman “In these days of difficulty, we Americans everywhere must and shall choose the path of social justice…, the path of faith, the path of hope, and the path of love toward our fellow man.”  -- Franklin D. Roosevelt Last year, our Board of Trustees and Judeans For Justice signed the Religious Action Center (RAC)’s “Brit Olam.” We pledged as a congregation to partake in advocacy and activism for the betterment of our state, city and community. Judeans For Justice is comprised of temple members like you, as well as lay leaders and clergy who want to bring positive and effective change in a time of unrest and uncertainty. We take this responsibility very seriously. We have created free, weekly citizenship classes to help educate eligible green card holders in the West Valley to become U.S. citizens. These classes will begin in January. We helped to initiate the very successful “First Annual Interfaith March,” which included stops at a church, a mosque and Temple Judea.  In partnerships with RAC and OneLA, we advocated for several state bills and were able to help with their passage in late 2017.  We met with many of our state and city legislators to discuss the issues most important to them, and have agreed to act together to find and bring about solutions.  We have already committed to a large agenda for the new year, and we need your help to mobilize and reshape the conversation of social action. We are looking for mentors and administrators for our citizenship classes. We need researchers and advocates for our actions on the 2018 State Legislation Agenda, which will likely include bills on the environment, the future of healthcare in California, women’s rights, and gun control. We need organizers for our participation in the Second Annual Women’s March on January 20 and our Second Interfaith March next summer.  After Rabbi Aaronson’s recent meeting with Mayor Garcetti, we have committed to a new TBD action to develop programs and solutions to the homeless problem in our local community. We plan to partner with another temple to work on housing and other issues affecting the homeless. We have also committed to a new action of attaining 100% congregational voter participation in this year’s important elections. Please pledge your involvement in our group and the actions that we will be bringing to our community in 2018. We meet every second Tuesday of the month at 7 pm at the temple.
