Official Newsletter of the Legend Oaks II Homeowners Association

Green Tip of the Month:

City of Austin Power Saver™ Program More attention is paid to this program in the summer when demand for electricity is at its highest, however a programmable thermostat (did I mention that it’s FREE?) helps keep costs down in the winter as well, whether you have gas heat or electric. Details of the program are below, and as someone who has been participating in the program for more than two years, I can tell you that the five minutes that your system may be cycled off in the summer is not at all noticeable, and if your family is out of your house during the day, you’ll definitely never notice. Except you will probably notice the 10-15% reduction on your electricity bill every month! Power Partner Thermostats—Details How it Works Austin Energy provides you with a free programmable thermostat plus free installation and warranty—valued between $200 and $280. In return, you allow them to cycle off your air conditioner briefly during peak demand—when demand for electricity is highest. Cycling Off During Peak Demand Periods Cycling off only occurs the few days each summer when the demand for electricity and our load are the highest. A radiocontrolled switch on the thermostat cycles off your air conditioner compressor when it receives a signal from Austin Energy. Cycling off is not noticeable. The purpose of cycling is to synchronize air conditioners so they take turns cycling on. This keeps the electric demand level. Cycling Off Timeline (only occurs when demand and load are highest) June thru September 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Excludes Holidays and Weekends Happens for No More than 10 Minutes Every Half Hour Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

Benefits of Participation • Free air conditioning check to determine compatibility with this type of programmable thermostat—includes a visual inspection of your air conditioner • Free programmable thermostat—set it by hand or program it anywhere, anytime you have Internet access • Free customer service support every day, 24 hours a day; free repair or replacement of your thermostat as long as you are a Power Partner • Depending on thermostat settings, most customers save 10% to 20% on their energy bill year-round with a programmable thermostat • Year-round comfort—arrive at an already cooled or heated building • A protective time delay to allow coolant to reset before equipment powers back up after a cycling session or a power outage • Risk-free, satisfaction guaranteed participation—if you are ever dissatisfied, we will remove the Power Partner Thermostat and reinstall your old thermostat at no charge • Standardize all your thermostats • Lock boxes at no cost for businesses if requested prior to thermostat installation Eligibility Any Austin Energy residential or commercial electric customer with standard-type air conditioners—split systems, package units, or heat pumps—may apply. The heater component may be either gas or electric. Required System Specifications • Air conditioning equipment 10 tons or less—air conditioning greater than 10 tons will require an inspection • Air conditioning equipment must not be controlled by another (Continued on Page 3) Legendary Times - February 2010

Legendary Times - February 2010

legendary Times Tips to Fight Holiday Stress and Holiday Blues by Legend Oaks Resident Dr. Harvey Kitzman

With the holidays just behind us, many people have seen an increase in their stress levels, and some people even have the holiday blues. Who doesn’t get stressed out with all of the shopping, cooking and travel plans that happen during the holidays? How many of us are time crunched and sleep deprived already? Add to that the fear of the flu bug and the H1N1 flu that we hear about on the news, and that worry just adds to our holiday stress levels. What is stress anyway? Stress is an internal reaction to external events. It is an evolutionary response – the fight or flight response. Continuous stress can manifest itself as GI problems, losing sleep, increased fatigue, heightened blood pressure, headaches, concentration problems, adrenal fatigue and other symptoms. As we all know, many events can trigger the appearance of stress in our lives – job, marriage, money, new baby, holidays etc. The body does not distinguish between “good” stress (marriage, new baby, starting a new biz) and “bad” stress. It only knows that there is stress, and it reacts. Are there other types of stresses? Yes. Our bodies are subject to stress from many sources, both internal and external. Another type of stress we need to be concerned about is oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is defined as a condition of increased oxidant production in animal cells characterized by the release of free radicals and resulting

in cellular degeneration. Think of this like taking a bite of an apple and letting it sit for a few minutes. The brown pigmentation that we see is due to oxidative stress. The same analogy can also be seen by rust forming on metal. This type of stress has been shown to be present in many types of medical conditions, including atherosclerosis, diseases involving inflammation, such as IBS, IBD, arthritis, periodontal disease, Crohn’s disease and Alzheimer’s. Free radicals are produced from both our internal cellular processes, such as the electron transport chain, and from the external environment. For example smoking is one method that is used by smokers to alleviate stress. When we smoke, however, each puff delivers 1027 of free radicals into our lungs. Think about that for a second. How much damage do you think this is doing internally? Below are some tips to fight the holiday stress & blues: • get enough rest • continue your exercise program • don’t overindulge in sweet foods • watch your alcohol consumption • continue to eat well as best you can (leafy greens, fruits & veggies) (Continued on Page 5)

Rebecca is the author of 3 cookbooks: The Pastry Queen, The Pastry Queen Christmas,(winner of an International Association of Culinary Professionals Cookbook award) and The Pastry Queen Parties. She has been featured in Texas Monthly, Gourmet, Ladies Home Journal, Food and Wine, Southern Living, Saveur and O. The Oprah Magazine. When she isn’t in the bakery or on horseback, Rebecca enjoys the sweet life in Fredericksburg, where she tends to her beloved backyard garden and menagerie. Rebecca Rather makes the most of her Lone Star state’s varied traditions, whether looking to the kitchens of Texas’ Mexican and German immigrants or to the cowboy culture of her own ancestry. Best of all her recipes are not fussy or complicated. We look forward to Rebecca sharing her passion for cooking and her many years of experience in the “culinary world” with our Austin Newcomers.

The National League of Junior Cotillions, Austin Chapter, has announced its Best-Mannered Teachers Awards for the 2009-2010 school year. Recipients of the award are: Ms. Rachel Horvitz (Hill Country Middle School) and Ms. Rebecca Hernandez (Gorzycki Middle School). Congratulations! Marisol Foster, Co-Director of the local Junior Cotillion, says, “The students in our program were excited about being part of the selection process to honor those teachers who exemplify the etiquette and good manners taught in our program.” This annual award is a result of nominations by Junior Cotillions students who have taken the time to write about a well-mannered teacher in their school. The criteria for selection included a positive attitude, courtesy and respect for students, and being an overall good role model. According to Courtney Duncan, Co-Director, the recognized teachers are those who treat the students with respect and have instilled a love of learning which will continue to have a positive effect on the students’ performance throughout their school years. The National League of Junior Cotillions is an etiquette, life skills, college prep and social dance training program that involves thousands of young people nationwide. Students learn the customs and courtesies that will serve them for a lifetime. Topics covered include dining and international etiquette, proper correspondence skills, and interviewing skills, in addition to the many other social skills that make life more pleasant for them and for those around them. Most importantly, the students learn to feel confident in various social situations. For more information regarding the National League of Junior Cotillions, Austin Chapter or this release, email Marisol Foster, [email protected], or call 512.369.8302.
