The Seniors of Fairfield are an active, fifty plus, fun-loving group of couples and singles who enjoy fellowship, monthly trips, and various activities together. If you or your spouse is fifty or older, a newcomer to Fairfield Village or have lived here in Fairfield for some time but have never attended one of our functions, you are cordially invited. Come and be a part of our funloving group. We’re sure you will enjoy it.

OUR HISTORY: Over these past ten plus years we've taken over a hundred trips. The Fairfield Gazette's web-site has back issues available from September, 2004. In order to go back to our beginning, we must thank Kelly Peel of Peel Inc. for locating all our articles from their archives and sending them to us. We now have every article submitted, which enabled us to put together Our History, and a complete listing of all our trips. Just go to Our History in our weekly email to read about our beginning and all the trips we’ve taken. OUR FEBRUARY BUS TRIP PLANS ARE FOR: Wednesday, February 15, to go Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This month our trip will take us to the Museum of Fine Arts to view the King Tutankhamen: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs exhibition. The exhibition is a time-ticket exhibit so we will have time for lunch at the Café Express in the Museum and to visit the other parts of the museum before the tour.

10

Fairfield Community Gazette - February 2012

We will depart from the Fairfield Village Parking Lot promptly at 10:30 a.m. Please be there by 10:15 a.m. This trip we will leave a little later for a change. We did not receive the details, however, before the deadline for this issue of the Gazette. We will publish the details in the March issue. Also, the details will be posted on our web site as

In fact, without more participation we may be forced to cut back on some trips, possibly one every other month. Then later, around 6:30 p.m. that evening, we have our Monthly Pot Luck. It is also at the Lakeside Trails Club House. However, plan on being there early. Doors open around 6:00 p.m. for socializing and fellowship. . Then stay and join many of our members that stay to play games after the meal and to finish up the deserts. Tuesday, February 14: Game Night at the Cooks’ House. It starts around 6:30 p.m. Just bring a little snack and a healthy appetite. This is always a fun evening with great fellowship. The directions are in the Activity page on our website and will also be in our February, 12 weekly newsletter. Note: This is Valentine’s Day

Cimbrey Brannan, one of our very own Cy-Fair ISD graduates and her husband, Mark Brannan, have recently published a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book entitled Goodnight Aggieland. Both former students of Texas A&M University, Mark and Cimbrey are passionate about conveying the traditions of Aggieland in a readable format for children and all who wish to discover the mystery behind Aggie traditions. When Mark and Cimbrey began the adoption of their future Aggie son, Zane, from Ethiopia, they searched in vain to find a children’s book that would help explain Texas A&M from the inside out. Therefore, the Brannans created a book to explain to insiders and outsiders the place we all know as Aggieland. Goodnight Aggieland is reminiscent of the children’s classic Goodnight Moon. The book and its colorful full-page illustrations authentically serve as an inspirational bedtime storybook as well as coffee table conversation piece for any Ol’ Ag. From Fish Camp to Silver Taps, each tradition is celebrated in a rhythmic cadence that marches through Aggieland one page at a time. Although Goodnight Aggieland communicates the treasured traditions of Texas A&M, it also supports children and families in need. The Brannans have committed to giving 10% of their proceeds to Legacy 685 (www.houstonsfirst.org/legacy685), a nonprofit organization that supports adoption, foster care, and orphan care around the world. The Brannans believe that opening homes and loving families to children orphaned by poverty, AIDS, and other tragedies is truly what Aggies are all about. The Brannans hope to develop a love for Aggies as readers flip through the pages of Goodnight Aggieland, and in doing so, they desire that raise awareness for the plight of orphans around the globe. To purchase or receive more information about Goodnight Aggieland, visit www.goodnightaggieland.com or email Mark and Cimbrey Brannan at [email protected].

Fairfield Book Club

The Fairfield Book Club is a terrific way to meet other women in our community, enjoy great conversations, and develop new friendships. We meet the third Wednesday of each month (rotating homes) from 7 to 9:30pm. Book Club members share food and drinks while discussing the book selection for that month. We read all kinds of books suggested by our members - classics, contemporary fiction, non-fiction, biographies, romance, sci-fi, etc. There are no book snobs in our group - we read it all! If you are a book lover or simply want to expand your reading and social network, please consider joining us. We invite you to attend one of our meetings as a guest or a member. We currently have openings; however, because we hold meetings in our homes, membership is limited. For membership inquiries, please contact Linda Locke by email ([email protected], subject heading “Book Club”) or by phone (713-298-6514, evenings only). Team Tiara is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to raising money to fund research, and education for breast cancer as well as provide outreach services to those affected by it. 2012 will mark our 7th year in this fight against breast cancer. To date, we have raised over $600,000 for breast cancer awareness, research and direct support for survivors. In 2012, Team Tiara will begin directly funding research into metastatic breast cancer. This is an under-funded area of research where we need to have a lasting impact. Men and women do not die when their cancer is confined to their breasts. We lose them when that cancer spreads to their bones, liver, lungs, brain and other organs -- robbing them of time with their families and friends. This is the heart-breaking side of breast cancer, and an area of research we need to be a part of. Our goal is to raise $100,000 in 2012, specifically targeted to metastatic breast cancer research. SO WE are excited to announce that www.pinktober365.com launched January 1. This new website will profile 365 pink warriors -- survivors, walkers, researchers, and advocates. We want to hear your story, whether you are a fighter, survivor, family or friend affected by breast cancer. Go to www.pinktober365.com to share your story or obtain more information. Team Tiara would be honored to hear from you.

From AMI Clover/Weeds

Dear Residents, It’s that time of year again - when the clover and weeds pop out in the yards. We understand that many yards were affected by the drought however, it is your responsibility to ensure your lawn is kept in a neat and attractive condition at all times. Check with your landscaper or your local gardening center as there are very good affordable products on the market that effectively treat for clover and weeds and also fertilize at the same time. If necessary, borrow your neighbor’s fertilizer spreader if you do not have one and treat your yard or check with a local gardening center for guidance. Many homes also lost shrubs and it’s necessary that they be replaced and this is the time of year to do the replacement. We appreciate your efforts. Your AMI Team

NEW LEGISLATION

Many homeowners may not be aware of the new legislation that became effective January 1st. The Texas State Legislature has mandated certain guidelines and policies that may affect you. To view these policies and guidelines please visit Fairfield’s website at www.Fairfieldvillage.org.

Cheryl Guinn, Realtor

I am drowning down here – signed, your lawn!

Last year will go down in the record books for extreme weather conditions and drought. We did not just break records, we shattered them! Irrigation systems ran more often and longer than any other year. But as we are in winter, and have cooler temperatures, our irrigation systems can just be turned off, yes OFF. In this case, just because you have one, does not mean to have to use it. In January we had an average of 2” of rain one Monday over the Fairfield subdivision, and irrigation systems were running the very next day. That was money wasted for those homeowners. The ground was saturated and all of that irrigation water just ran down the drain. Seldom do we relish a cold and wet environment, save maybe the “true-fan football experience”. Well, your yard feels the same way. Winter has arrived and the time has come to give your irrigation system a rest. Trees and shrubs have lost most of their leaves and there is a reason lawns are not “spring green”. These are signs that plants are slowing their growth activity, heading into dormancy in preparation for colder weather and a shortage of water. In this dormant state, most turf and plants survive on the limited water typically received through the occasional winter rainfall. Do not confuse your landscape by over watering this time of year. Take advantage of our winter weather and save. Save money by reducing your water usage and shutting off your irrigation system until spring. Even then, if we can get seasonal rains, leave it off as long as you can. You will be surprised how well your lawn looks without it running. You will save water and money, because then your landscape will not need to be supplemented beyond what it naturally receives. Next month, we will talk about preparing your irrigation system for the upcoming season. Jay Hartley, Licensed Irrigator 5353

Fairfield Community Gazette - February 2012

What Can You Do About Soliciting In The Neighborhood? Many communities are ripe targets for solicitors – for a variety of reasons. While the Association has no real control over soliciting activities, we have tried to discourage solicitors from marketing in our community by placing “no soliciting” signs in common areas. The reason that we cannot prevent soliciting is that the streets and roadways within the community are public access ways owned and maintained by the county. This means that no person or persons may be prevented from entering the community. Of course, if an individual or individuals are in the process of breaking the law, the Sheriff or other law enforcement officer can take immediate action. Your Association recommends the following actions that every owner can take to discourage unwelcome soliciting in the community: • Report all suspicious persons to the Sheriff’s Department and request the deputies on duty be made aware of your concerns. • Promptly remove all flyers left on your front or garage door. • Promptly report to the Post Office all flyers left on the mailboxes. • Refuse to make use of solicitors’ offers and refuse to patronize any company being marketed in this manner. • Notify the managing agent of any companies presently soliciting so that letters can be sent advising them of this policy of not permitting door to door soliciting (they will be reminded of the community newsletter and/or the Green Sheet as marketing options). • Individual homeowners have the ability to place a small “No Trespassing/No Soliciting” sign at the entry to their homes. Should a solicitor continue to leave flyers, the homeowner then has the authority to file charges against the Solicitor/Company for trespassing on private property.

CURBSIDE TREES The appearance of your trees at the sidewalk at your home is vital to the overall appearance of your community. The trees are part of the overall plan of development and it is each homeowner’s responsibility to ensure the trees are trimmed on a regular basis. Many trees have branches hanging over the street, brushing the tops of vehicles and some are even blocking stop signs. For the benefit of all the Fairfield residents, and the overall appearance of your neighborhood, please check your trees and if necessary, raise the canopy (should be 12-14 ft. from the street), remove dead branches, and shape the tree. Regrettably, should you chose not to do this, the County has the authority to trim them back and will not take the time to groom them properly. Thank you for your understanding.
