From the Board Arthur Jablon In June of 1988, I moved to Calabasas from St. Louis with my wife Mady and our children, one of which was in high school and the other two were in college. We had belonged to a synagogue our entire married life, so it was natural that we spent our summer investigating what synagogues were available to us. After meeting the staff and connecting with new friends like Irv and Sandy Klasky, our decision was easy. Temple Judea would be our Jewish community. It is now 28 years later and I have had the opportunity and pleasure of serving on the Temple Judea Board of Trustees for 27 years, including my tenure as President. During my time on the board, I have often served as a presidential appointee, a position that gave me the opportunity to wrestle with many of the hard decisions of the time—choosing a new rabbi or cantor, temple mergers, and location of our present facility to name just a few. While these discussions were never easy, they were always approached with the best interests of the congregation in mind. Many people have asked, “Arthur, why have you agreed to spend the hours you do, year after year, on the Temple Board of Trustees?” The answer for me is simple; I believe I have a responsibility to use my abilities to help assist in maintaining a viable Jewish community. My time serving on the board has been very rewarding, as the members of our Board of Trustees over the years, have always been exceptionally dedicated individuals. Deliberations by our board may not always come out with a result I personally agree with, but there is no question that each issue being handled gets a fair and thoughtful hearing by everyone, and that is exactly what we count on our board to do. It has always been my honor and privilege to serve on our temple’s board and to be an active participant in our Temple Judea community.

A Valuable Lesson I Have Learned Rabbi Sam Spector

My greatest strength also happens to be my greatest flaw: my stubbornness. On one hand, I never give up on accomplishing a task or fulfilling a vision. Yet, my stubbornness also hindered me when I was a student; how so? I was sure that my way of seeing the world was the right way. People who disagreed with my approaches “needed to be educated,” people who voted differently than me were “misguided,” and people whose views on Israel differed than my own were “anti-Israel if not “anti-Semitic.” I had an idea that I would someday become a rabbi and that everyone would then learn to think exactly the way that I do and see the world through my eyes. I discovered that people did not relate well to college students who thought they knew everything, and if I wanted to succeed in the rabbinate, it required listening to views with which I disagreed. What I found was that people who disagreed with me were not “wrong,” but rather they were often just as, if not more, informed on issues as I was. They arrived at different their views through their unique life experiences. I found that listening to other viewpoints helped me in becoming a better rabbi and a more informed person, and I evolved in my ideologies.   There is no issue closer to my heart than Israel. What I have discovered is that my support for Israel manifests itself differently than others within the Jewish community, who also share my deep love for our homeland. We are blessed in Los Angeles as there are many organizations whose mission is helping Israel, yet each have different approaches and views. This array of organizations allows a space to be created for

samuellspector

every person who is passionate about Israel to advocate and become involved and make a difference. Throughout this year, the clergy team and I will attend conferences for StandWithUs, AIPAC, and JStreet. Though these organizations differ in their views, missions and approaches, they all are committed to Ahavat v’Ezrat Yisrael, loving and helping Israel. I agree and disagree with all of these organizations to some degree; yet, all inspire me. They serve as a reminder that Reform Jews have an obligation to make informed choices, meaning that we cannot dismiss a viewpoint or an organization until we listen and experience the other side for ourselves. It is my hope that everyone committed to Israel’s future will join us at least at one of these organizations’ events, even if you think that the organization may not be for you. As Israel and the United States are at pivotal moments in their histories, may we all see within each other beyond disagreements to a love and commitment for the countries whose flags are represented on our bima: Israel and America.

What ELSE is happening in the ECC? Margie Ipp - Director of ECC Lisa Whitman - Assistant Director of ECC In addition to the amazing daily learning that is taking place in our ECC classrooms, we are lucky to have an incredible line-up of enrichment programs that are available to our students during the school day. On Tuesdays, every nursery school class alternates between Yoga and Library time. Our Yoga class is taught by “Brookie Cookie” (Brooke Harker) who inspires the children to move their bodies in new ways, and teaches them how to be “peaceful piggies.” They are encouraged not only to stretch their bodies, but also to calm their minds. Our new Horowitz Children’s Library is the site for story time every other week, and the kids (and teachers) LOVE it! Our library teacher Tracy Wiessbrod reads stories, and uses puppet shows and felt boards to explore books and entertain the children. Mostly, she shares her deep love of literature, and encourages all our students to be lovers of learning. Wednesdays bring time in the Imagination Station and Music. The Imagination Station is our own fully

functioning children’s museum with rotating interactive exhibits. Created by nursery school teacher Jil Dyan, it is a space that encourages free exploration. Our newest exhibits are a dark room, equipped with black lights to see fluorescent shapes and manipulatives inside, and a puppet theater. Ongoing exploration areas include a pizza restaurant, Lego wall, and wind machine. Our music class is taught by Cantor Jen Roher, who is also a mom in our program and a Temple Judea Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor. The children are not only learning and singing songs that relate to all the Jewish and secular holidays, but they are also learning the early childhood version of music history and appreciation. Add all that to the daily classroom fun of nursery school, and you can see why the Temple Judea ECC is the place to be!

Rebecca Platt - Director of Education I am thrilled to announce that Camp Zehut will be entering its second summer of Jewish day camp fun this year at a fantastic new location: De Toledo High School. Moving Camp Zehut off campus will allow us to enhance what we offer to our camp families. We will now have a full swim program in collaboration with De Toledo and the Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy, including not only free swim, but options for swim lessons and swim instruction. In addition, our new summer home will provide campers with a quality outdoor and athletic space that we have long dreamed of for our program. We could not be more excited about this partnership with De Toledo High School and weare excited to build our program on their state-of-the-art campus.

Kindergarten Readiness program, utilizing our cutting edge Early Childhood Center curriculum. Please consider sending your child to Camp Zehut for a magical Jewish camp experience!

We are pleased to welcome Stacey Rutstein to our staff. Sadly, this meant saying “so long” to Danit Rothstein, who recently left the LA area for Portland, Oregon, for a change in lifestyle. Stacey will take over Danit’s responsibilities as the Cantors’ Assistant and B’nei Mitzvah Coordinator. Stacey comes to us with a great deal of administrative support experience, having worked most recently at both a synagogue and a school district office. She lives in Oak Park with her family. I’m sure you will help her feel right at home when you meet her. Welcome, Stacey! 5

Development Greg Cohen - Trustee & Eileen Aroesti - Director of Development STARRY, STARRY NIGHT…. Pillars of the Community Event

On Thursday, October 6, more than 70 members of our Pillar community celebrated the good deeds of our synagogue through the benefits of our Pillar Program with a special event hosted by Debbie & Rabbi Joshua Aaronson and Ellen Franklin & Roy Silver.

The beautiful new home of the Aaronsons was the backdrop for this event where guests gathered in the early evening to spend time together, nibbling on Scott Roeb’s wonderful hors d’oeuvres as the wine flowed and discussion was in the air of the present political climate; a pre-curser to the evening’s program. As evening turned to night everyone came inside the to bless the Aaronson’s new home and hang the Mezuzah and then out into the perfect night air for an interesting, thought-provoking conversation with David Daniel, CNN senior reporter, as the topic Media: Fact, Fiction, Myth or Reality was reported on and discussed. It was a wonderful way to begin our New Year!

Women of Temple Judea Tracey Pomerance-Poirier, President

2017 ushers in a time of uncertainty for many of us. This is why Women of Temple Judea is more important than ever to our temple community. We provide great programs, social and spiritual opportunities, that cannot be found anywhere else. In October, Women of Temple Judea hosted Jewish Women’s Theatre--powerful, contemporary stories of and by Jewish Women that made us laugh and cry. We hosted “The California Ballot Proposition Thicket,” where the 18 State propositions were dissected including how our votes on these issues will impact California. Rounding out October was our annual Mah Jongg Tournament, where women throughout Los Angeles came together to enjoy a day of Mah Jongg and friendship. Two weeks later, we held our annual Chanukah Boutique, where our extended temple community came together to have latkes, schmooze, shop for kids and grandkids--another great opportunity for relationship building. February brings a Maggie Anton discussion of her book, “Fifty Shades of Talmud,” followed by another Jewish Women’s Theatre performance later in the month. This is just a sampling of what Women of Temple Judea provides to create a sense of community and sisterhood. Get involved, support us, join us.

Women-of-Temple-Judea

Brotherhood David Daniel and Dean Piller, Co-Presidents This photo shows a perfect example of Brotherhood in action: having fun while helping the community. Joel Greene (in green & brown plaid with the stylish “stache”) led our volunteer group at the Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission Great Thanksgiving Banquet, helping serve turkey dinner with all the trimmings to more than a thousand people in need. Even for those of us who are there every year, the expressions of gratitude for something so seemingly basic never fail to touch our hearts. Our December highlight, of course, was another Brotherhood tradition: our Christmas Day Pancake Breakfast! (Yes, our events do seem to center on food. This is a bad thing?) The fellowship and the syrup both flowed freely, as we kibitzed and fressed between Chanukah celebrations. January brings the next event in our Speaker Series with WTJ: “And The Oscar Goes To…” with movie experts from the Los Angeles Times and Entertainment Weekly sharing their insights on the favorites, the longshots, and the way things really work inside the Academy. Hope we see you there on the 25th! Looking further ahead, we have other events in the works, including our spring retreat, all involving some combination of social action, serving the Temple Judea community, and just having fun with a great group of guys. To make it happen, we need you! Connect with Brotherhood! 11

Social Action

Jennifer Lutzky - Chair

Congregants of all ages had a wonderful time performing acts of Tikkun Olam on Mitzvah Day this past November. The morning began with our clergy leading a brief service, as well as a visit from City Council Member Bob Blumenfield.  Then, we spread out across the campus for a variety of activities. There was an obstacle course to run, sandwiches to make and lunches to pack, Israeli dancing to learn, lots of craft activities, and food!   We packed 400 lunches and 200 toiletry kits, decorated 70 meal delivery bags for Project Chicken Soup, made 28 stuffed comfort toys for Save A Child’s Heart, made 26 beautiful beaded eyeglass chains for the Jewish Home, and raised more than $100 to buy new books for Chai Lifeline.  We also hosted congregation Shir Ami, enabling them to pack backpacks for School on Wheels, and we enjoyed lemonade benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  The Brotherhood sponsored a terrific barbecue lunch, and the Women of Temple Judea helped host our bake sale.   If you are interested in helping plan future Mitzvah Days, or other Social Action events, we want to hear from you!  Please contact Jennifer at jenlutzky@yahoo. com, or watch your email for our monthly meetings (typically the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm).
