ANOTHER ADVENTURE By Douglas H. Domedion I travel this road quite often as it puts me near a marsh and the possibility of getting some wildlife shots. The ground was covered with snow and I noticed a lot of mink tracks along the edge of the marsh This male mink is trailing a female because and even crossing the road, way more than it is mating season. one normally would see in one location. In my younger years I did a lot of trapping from high school and even after I came home from the service. Muskrat and raccoon were my main goals, but I got into fox trapping pretty heavy for fur and even for predator control. Some mink were of course trapped, but there were never many around and they were more of a “luck” deal. I was pretty young at the time my first mink was caught. Way behind my parent’s house there was an old swale and a lot of time was spent exploring it. One fall a floating log was found with muskrat droppings on it and I knew this would be a great place to catch my some “ ‘rats” as we called them. All that had to be done was set some traps on the log and then cover them lightly with some grass that the ‘rats like. I didn’t have many traps yet and I wanted to set as many as possible on that log cause it looked to me like every ‘rat in the swale was going up on that log. I borrowed some and set that whole log up. Boy, I was going to get rich! The next morning was a Sunday and I couldn’t wait to check the traps. Most of the traps were gone off the log and I began pulling them out of the water. A ‘rat and then another and then a mink! Wow! I rushed home with my catch, charged up to my parents’ bedroom (they were still in bed) and popped that mink in their faces! “Look what I caught, a mink!” I don’t think they were excited as I was! Mink do a lot of traveling and never really hold still very long which makes them hard to pin down with a trap or even a camera. They are always looking for frogs, small fish, crabs and even ‘rats. Thus, from past experience with mink I knew all these tracks I was seeing meant one thing: it was mating season and there was a female holing up nearby and attracting male mink. I thought, “If I sit here long enough one may offer me a shot with the camera.” I didn’t hang around that day as there were other things to do, but the next morning I was back there looking for pictures of some ducks. As I sat there waiting for some ducks to move closer a large mink ran right under my nose next to the vehicle. He disappeared, but soon another mink appeared up ahead and ran across the road and the back. Then shortly afterward the first mink ran up to the edge of the road and then back to the marsh edge. It all happened so fast that it was not possible to get any pictures. This played out a few more times over the next 15 minutes so I moved up to where the action was. As I mentioned before a mink never stops moving so it is difficult to get a picture of them. Suddenly the small one (the female) ran up the bank along the road and disappeared in the snow. Then the male came along and tracked her to the den she apparently had there. She kept him out and he finally left, but a few shots were gotten. This routine continued off and on for another 20 minutes; her coming out and then him chasing her around the cattails to eventually go down that hole again. I got some great shots for my patience and knowing what was going on and not getting out of my vehicle paid off. The price of mink fur in recent years has been anything but good ($6-10) even though the numbers of mink seemed to have skyrocketed, few trappers intentionally try to trap them. The mink is a promiscuous animal that does not form pair bonds. The mating process is violent, with the male typically biting the female on the nape of the neck. Females are receptive for seven- to ten-day intervals during the three-week breeding season, and can mate with multiple males. Mink have a short delay before implantation which allows pregnant mink to keep track of environmental conditions and select an ideal time. The kits are born from April through June and are weaned after five weeks, but remain with the mother until fall when the family breaks up. Beverly Yates Brigham, 74, of Medina, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Wed., March 21, 2018, at her home, with her loving family and friends by her side. Born on Sept. 26, 1943, in Medina, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Ernest “Bud” and Elise (Pickard) Chambers. Beverly was a lifelong resident of Medina and she worked various jobs including Fisher-Price and Ontario Foods. She loved being outdoors while working in her flower garden and spending time with friends and family, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Beverly is survived by two children, Heath (Leandar Berg) Yates and Sara Yates (Jeffery) Gonzalez, all of Medina; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Eric (Kim Weatherbee) Chambers of Medina; a sister, Lynda (Joe) Travise of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her companion, Glenn “Wess” Humphrey and many special friends, including Kelly Chaffee and Sandra Crossett. There were no calling hours. Helen H. Mayes, 99, of Kendall, died March 17, 2018, in the Villages of Orleans following a long illness. She was born Aug. 24, 1918, in Rochester to Leo and Marie (Stubbe) Haag. She lived in this area her entire life. Helen was a faithful member of St. Mark’s RC Church, the first President of the Kendall Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary starting in 1949, attended the Nutrifare program in Kendall for over 14 years, and worked as a medical secretary at the former Arnold Gregory Memorial Hospital. She also enjoyed embroidery and ceramics. Mrs. Mayes was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; her son Paul Mayes; three brothers: “Bus”, Warren, and Donald Haag; and two sisters, Muriel Armstrong and Florence Kedian. She is survived by her son William Mayes of Kendall; daughter-in-law, Dixie Mayes of Kendall; brother Norman (Rowena) Haag of Florida; eight grandchildren: Erica, Brian (Michelle) Mayes, and Sean Mayes all of Kendall, Linda (Tim) Lewis of Albion, John Mayes of Holley, Kimberly (Keith) Makowski of Kendall, Timothy (Marcia) Mayes of Kendall, and Matthew (Tara) Mayes of Kendall; 15 great-grandchildren; four greatgreat-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. LOST STREAM MAP The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map-known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” It was completed in 1965 after a 30 year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. Nothing can delay road trips more suddenly than flat tires. Unfortunately, because tires are the only part of the vehicle constantly in contact with the road, wear and tear is to be expected.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that flat tires and blowouts are a leading cause of highway traffic accidents. Even though flats cannot be prevented, there are ways to make tires less vulnerable and make vehicles safer along the way.
Flat tire avoidance Routine inspection and tire maintenance is essential to their performance. In addition, paying attention to road hazards and avoiding them when possible can prolong the life of tires.
• Tire pressure: Tires should be maintained at the correct air pressure indicated on the sidewall or as advised by the manufacturer. Tires with too much air can be damaged by bumpy roads and potholes. Tires that are not inflated enough may increase friction on the roadway, resulting in a blowout. Check tire pressure routinely, and do so when the tires have rested for three hours. Many vehicles now monitor tire pressure automatically and alert drivers through a signal on the dashboard
• Tire wear: The advisors at Select Auto Imports say that inspecting tires for uneven wear should be a routine part of maintenance. If tires show uneven wear, they may be more susceptible to flats or blowouts. Tire rotations can help alleviate uneven wear. The NHTSA recommends tires be rotated every 5,000 miles.
• Tire treads: The Allstate Insurance company says to look for worn tire treads. Check for wear bar indicator marks located between the tread pattern of the tires. If the wear bar is level with the treads, it’s time for new tires. Otherwise, place a quarter between the grooves of the tire. If the tread doesn’t extend beyond the top of Washington’s head, it’s a good idea to replace the tires.
• Construction sites: Drivers should try to avoid areas under construction. Rocks, nails, metal shards, glass, and divots in the roads can cause punctures and eventually flats. Flat tire repair When flats occur, having the right tools and understanding the procedure for fixing the flat is key.
Drivers will need an inflated spare tire, a jack, a lug wrench, bracing material (to keep the vehicle from rolling, such as a brick or piece of wood), and the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Goodyear says it is essential to fix the flat in a safe area away from traffic and on a flat surface. • Use the owner’s manual to find the correct position to place the jack to lift the car.

• Remove hubcaps or center covers to access the lug nuts. With the lug wrench, loosen lug nuts in a counterclockwise direction. • Take off the tire and put on the spare. Replace and tighten the lug nuts. Replace hubcaps or covers. • Slowly lower the vehicle and drive cautiously to ensure the spare is in working order. • Purchase a new tire or have a hole plugged or repaired at a tire center. n

Factors that Impact Auto Insurance Premiums Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Automotive insurance provider State Farm says most insurance companies consider several factors when calculating the cost of car insurance. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road — and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums. Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums. n

Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers. Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most. Slow down and give other motorists space Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1⁄12-inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains. Exercise caution with puddles and running water It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways. Skidding Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation. Maintain tires Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles. Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well. Wet weather can make driving challenging. Driving slowly and modifying other habits when roads are wet can make for safe road trips. n

1 1/2 tablespoons grainy mustard 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 1/2 teaspoons grounder turmeric 1/2 to 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 small onion (about 4 ounces), peeled and cut into fine half rings 6 large cloves garlic, peeled and crushed to a pulp 1 1/4 pounds boned shoulder of pork or lamb, cut into 1-inch cubes 2/3 cup canned coconut milk, well stirred Combine the mustard, cumin, turmeric, cayenne, salt, and vinegar in a cup. Mix well. Put the oil in a large, nonstick frying pan and set over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, put in the onion. Stir and fry until it is medium brown. Put in the garlic. Stir and fry for 30 seconds. Put in the spice paste. Stir and fry for a minute. Put in the meat. Stir and fry for about 3 minutes. Then add the coconut milk and 2/3 cup water if you are cooking continuously in a pressure cooker, or 1 cup water if you are cooking in the frying pan. (Transfer to a pressure cooker at this stage if that is your intention.) Cover and either bring up to pressure, or bring to a boil if you are using the frying pan. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes in the pressure cooker and 60 to 70 minutes in the frying pan.

Versatile and flavorful, lamb is enjoyed across the globe and is especially popular come springtime holidays. Throughout the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe, lamb has traditionally been enjoyed once the weather warms and the season of fertility renews. Christians, who refer to Jesus Christ as the “Lamb of God” pay homage to the Easter miracle and often dine on lamb as part of their celebrations. Depending on how they interpret Jewish law, Jews may or may not include lamb at their traditional Passover seder. Lamb is a tender and tasty meat that can be prepared in various ways. Lamb can be roasted, braised, stewed, broiled, and even grilled. To prepare lamb well, it is extremely important to follow safety guidelines concerning food crosscontamination. Undercooked and raw meats may contain E. coli bacteria; therefore, lamb should not come in contact with other foods that will be served uncooked. Many cuts of lamb are very tender so they will not require long marinating times to help break down the fibers in the meat. Lamb does not need a lot of prep time. In fact, a simple seasoning of herbs, garlic or a spice rub will provide substantial flavor. According to The Daily Meal, New Zealand or Australian lamb has a milder flavor than domestic lamb. Over-seasoning can overwhelm the delicate flavor of the lamb in these cases. While preferences differ, many chefs attest that a bone-in cut of lamb will be more flavorful. However, boneless cuts are easier to carve. Similarly, cooks have strong opinions on the doneness of lamb, with some prefering rare meat while others like theirs well-done. Lamb can be juicy and tender at a wide range of cooking temperatures, so home chefs can decide how they want to prepare their lamb. The average temperature for roasting lamb to medium doneness will fall between 135 to 145 F, with the USDA recommending at least 145 F as the desired temperature. Lamb roasts at a rate of 20 minutes per pound at a cooking temperature of 325 F. Use a thermometer to accurately measure the internal temperature of lamb. Remove the lamb when it is roughly five degrees below the desired temperature, as the meat will continue to cook even after it is removed from the oven, skillet or grill. After cooking. let the lamb rest for around 10 minutes for thinner cuts and 20 minutes for roasts or leg of lamb to allow the juices to redistribute.
