Village Trustee Stanley Farone, Kaitlynn Basinait, Samantha Basinait, Mayor Eileen Banker, Troop Co-Leader Dawn Basinait, Girl Scouts staff member Lena Budd. Front: Abriella Rice, Isabella Basinait
Girl Scouts of Western New York Troop 82259 visited Albion Mayor Eileen Banker to kick off the start of their cookie booth season. The Girl Scouts met the mayor, along with Village Trustees Stanley Farone and Gary Katsanis, to talk about community service work, Girl Scout badges and the troop’s cookie goals. The mayor answered the girls’ questions about being a female leader and role model, how the local government works, and how she makes decisions. Banker stated, “Being mayor, this is the first time I’ve ever had the opportunity to have the Girl Scouts visit. I think it’s wonderful that they would want to come in and learn about the village government and what the mayor does. I appreciate the fact that they’re interested in community service and what we do when it comes to a village board. I hope they’ve learned something and look to hold positions that have leadership in them.” Trustee Katsanis explained to the girls how a large part of the job that the mayor and trustees handle is related to fiduciary responsibility and budgeting. The Girl Scouts were able to make a connection because the cookie program allows girls to engage in age-appropriate activities such as money management and financial literacy. Everyone in attendance also took part in a cookie sampling. Mayor Banker commented she has always loved the classic Shortbreads and Peanut Butter Sandwiches, but was appreciative that the troop had a gluten-free option available for those who required it. After the meeting, the troop went around the corner to the village police station. The officers purchased cookies, took the girls on a tour of the station and then showed them the inside of one of the police vehicles including all the gear they carry with them. The topic of how to be a good citizen and the importance of assisting people was discussed. The Girl Scouts explained how they perform community service and try to help people in need. The officers said that their goal was very similar because they always want to make the community better, even if they serve a different role. Officer Sean Mcelhinny said, “Sometimes someone is having the worst day of their life and that brings me into their life that day. To be able to help them out, even if they don’t realize at the time that they need help, is so gratifying. I’ve had people come here or see me on the streets after the fact who say thank you.” Officer Brandon Annable added, “That call might be the only time a person has police contact with you so you should always treat them as best you can. They might be having a bad day or something going on in their life you don’t know about. You always want to make an effort as an officer to respect everyone even if you end up having to arrest someone. It can help them in the long run to get them what they need and possibly save their life.” Seventh-grade Cadette Girl Scout, Samantha Basinait, expressed interest in potentially becoming a policewoman one day and was encouraged by the officers to pursue her goal. Officer Annable commented how it would be beneficial to have female officers provide their talents to protecting and serving the community and said that they haven’t had female applicants for open positions at the station in several years, but are always hoping to see more women join law enforcement. At the end of the event, Girl Scout Troop Co-Leader Dawn Basinait commented, “It was wonderful that the mayor was able to talk to us. Some people get really busy and they don’t have time, but she’s a wonderful person. It was a lot of fun and I’m also glad the police were able to give us a tour.” Girl Scout cookie season ends March 31. To learn more about Girl Scouts or to find a cookie booth, visit gswny.org.

By Douglas H. Domedion This is a great time of the year to prepare some nesting boxes for our feathered friends. Birds such as bluebirds, wood ducks, and tree swallows will use man made nesting boxes. But why do we need to provide nesting structures? What did these feathered friends use before man started building bird boxes? Well, we have lost a lot of our old hollow trees that Bluebirds are on the way back, are you nesting boxes ready? provided nesting cavities in the past not only for birds but also animals such as raccoons and squirrels. There are also more non-native birds such as starlings and house sparrows that compete for these nesting cavities. Loss of nesting places, along with loss of habitat has caused a decline of certain birds such as the bluebird. The starling and house sparrow drive away bluebirds from nesting cavities. The new farm practices, such as huge crop fields with no hedgerows, fewer grasslands, and use of pesticides, caused an all-time low in populations in the late 1970s. However they began to rebound in the 1980s with the bluebird conservation movement that motivated many people to erect nesting boxes. Of course there is more then just building a box and sticking it up some where. First, we need to build the right-sized box with the proper entrance hole. You can find information on building nesting boxes at the library or stop in at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge headquarters and pick up blueprints for the latest proven designs. Winter is a great time to build these boxes because they need to be in place early in the spring. Some birds, like wood ducks, return very early and begin looking for places to nest. Others, such as the bluebirds, will actually use these boxes for roosting in the winter. Each of the birds I mentioned above have a preferred location, nest height, and nesting material. They also need some kind of predator guard to keep raccoons, cats, and squirrels from getting to the boxes. Let’s start with our beautiful state bird – the bluebird. They like short grassland locations such as pastures, large lawns, and golf courses. (If you place boxes in a pasture make sure the farm animals can not rub against them). Try to stay 30 or 40 yards away from bushy areas that will attract house wrens who will destroy bluebird eggs. It will also help to face the boxes away from these areas. They prefer a low box height such as 4 or 5 feet. The best mounting post is 3/4” or double-walled 1/2” electric conduct pipe as it is very hard for a predator to climb. Another way to deter predators is to put grease on the pipe. The common practice of putting a piece of PCV pipe over the stake usually doesn’t work as it is big enough to give a predator a “hugging” type grip to climb with. No nesting material is need inside as they bring their own. If a bluebird trail (a series of boxes) is to be set up they need to be a minimum of 100 yards apart. The tree swallow will also use a bluebird box. They are a great bird to have around as they eat thousands of flying insects. However, they will drive bluebirds away from a nesting box. The way to beat this is to put two boxes up (usually facing away from each other) about 10 or 15 feet apart. The swallow will let a pair of bluebirds use the extra box, but not another tree swallow. The wood duck population decline years ago was do partly to the lack of hollow trees. With the development of nesting boxes and proper management it is now a common waterfowl in our marsh. These larger boxes should be placed near a body of water although they will use boxes up to 1.5 miles from water. The “woodie” is a shy duck so don’t place the boxes to close to human disturbance. They can be mounted on top of steel poles, 4x4 wooden posts, or on trees. Boxes over water only need to be 4 or 5 foot above the high water level. On land 6 to 10 feet is fine. The important thing here is to place a predator guard below the box to keep raccoons, etc. from climbing up and killing the hen that is nesting. If you place it on a tree make sure a predator can’t get to the box by climbing from another tree to the nest box tree. Ducks Unlimited puts out a great information folder on wood duck boxes and predator guards. You can pick one up at the INWR headquarters. If you don’t put up guards don’t put up a box, you will only be getting a bird killed. For nesting material put 4” to 6” of wood shavings in the box. Your local farm or pet store will carry it. Do not use sawdust as it holds moisture and can suffocate the young ducklings. Another important aspect of bird boxes is maintenance. Clean the boxes out every year after nesting season and put fresh wood shavings in (where needed) before the bird returns in the spring. My contact information is 585-798-4022 or

By Adrienne Kirby, Gaines Town Historian
A. Willard “Bill” Densmore (1890-1964) loved farming. Despite suffering the misfortune of two barn fires in less than twenty years, he rebuilt each time because he couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Around 1929, during his tenure as Gaines Supervisor (19241931), his barn on Densmore Road burned to the foundation. So he built a new one on the old foundation. When that barn burned on Sept. 6, 1944, Densmore was in his early 50s. He built another barn anyway. In the end, it was a heart attack in 1959, not fire, that forced Bill Densmore to quit farming. As he watched the tools of his trade being auctioned, he remarked to a neighbor, “I never thought it would come to this.” According to the Orleans Republican, the total loss of the 1944 fire was estimated to be about $15,000, the equivalent of $214,000 in 2019. He lost a truck and its load of peaches, which must have been particularly discouraging. It had been a bad year for peaches, and Densmore was one of the few farmers in the area who had much of a crop. The newspaper stated that he also lost “several hundred bushels of wheat, which was to be sown soon.” John Long clarifies this report, explaining that Densmore would have intended to sell most of it, keeping only a little for himself. A great deal of hay also went up in flames. Unlike the first fire, there were no animals to worry about. At this point in time, Densmore had all his livestock at another farm on Transit Road. Rebuilding in 1944 was perhaps more challenging than before because World War II made resources scarce. Farmers in his situation couldn’t always find enough new lumber, and sometimes had to look for used beams. Having a truck was crucial, because that was how farmers got their produce to the processors, and money in their pockets. Although production of consumer vehicles had stopped because of the war, Densmore applied to the county War Rationing Board and became the owner of the newest truck around. Mr. Long remembers it as a green GMC with a black painted grill, probably made for the military. Bill Densmore’s third barn has fared better than the previous two. It’s a handsome white building that can still be seen on the east side of the road, sitting on the same foundation as the original. It stands as a quiet testament to one man’s perseverance and love of farming.

A huge and much deserved congratulations to Orleans/Niagara BOCES’ Project Based Engineering teacher, Scott Brauer. Scott, who teaches at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center, has been named the SkillsUSA New York Area 1 Advisor of the Year! SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. His journey began when he was a junior in high school and attending BOCES. He says being a member of SkillsUSA gave him direction, purpose and focus. It is one of the reasons he decided to become a career and technical education teacher at the same center Scott Brauer after winning his award. he attended and become a SkillsUSA advisor himself. “I just want others to experience what I was able to experience as a student. SkillsUSA is life changing!” Scott has been a SkillsUSA advisor for 28 years. He has been the lead advisor at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center for the past 12 years and believes in order to be a great advisor you have to become involved through ardent practice, gathering of information and networking. He trains others not to do things for the young people, but to assist them on their journey. He coordinates all the competitions that the center participates in at the regional, state and national levels. He is also the contest chair for Advanced Manufacturing Technology, CNC and Machining contests at the regional level. His class has been recognized by the NYS Education Department as a Top Career and Technical Education Program in New York State. He was nominated by his peers across the Area 1 division. One nominator says, “Young people are always the center of Scott’s decisions and plans. He is forever mindful of any action’s impact on the individual or the group. He is always moving forward, taking others with him into the future and the world beyond his classroom.” His nomination also says, “Scott is known for many things: his generosity, his selflessness, his devotion to his wife and family, his belief in God, his role as a teacher and mentor, his love for his students and young people, his work ethic, his love of everything outdoors and his involvement with SkillsUSA.”
Tips on how to write
CLASSIFIED ADS 1 2
that sell!
USE A KEY WORD. This immediately tells the reader exactly what you have to sell.
Make your description CLEAR AND FACTUAL. State the year, make, model, color & size and tell what condition the item is in. Also, state the special features.
3
STATE THE PRICE. Successful classified advertisers have learned that the price in an ad helps increase the chances for results.
4
IF THERE IS A GENUINE SENSE OF URGENCY, say so. The words “We’re moving,” or “Must sell fast,” suggest that readers respond immediately.
5
INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER. Classifieds get results fast and often generate immediate sales. If you cannot be available to answer the phone at all times, be sure to specify special calling times such as “after 9pm” or “before 11am.” 170 N. NON-cOMPetING INteReStS If you are considering selling your business here or elsewhere, you should find out if the state where the transaction will occur allows “non-compete agreements.” These agreements expect the seller to agree not to compete after the business is sold. Even in some states that allow non-compete agreements, to be enforceable, such agreements must be strictly limited by time, geography, and scope. This is because judges are not overly willing to restrict a person’s right to earn a living despite the buyer’s insistence that you not go into a competing business that will cut into his or her income. Before signing such agreements, sellers should know how much they are being compensated and how much it will restrict them. The Law Office of MacK & Pace counsels and advises numerous business clients in their day to day operations, and have helped many a business entrepreneur set up and form the business entity best suited to him or her, be it a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or limited liability company. To schedule a free consultation, please call (585)798-1000. We can provide you with an honest, straightforward assessment of how to resolve your legal issues.

Every year, the Orleans/Niagara BOCES Business Office reached out to the Graphic Communications program at the Orleans Career and Technical Education Center to see if they want to help with designing the cover for the organization’s service guide. BOCES’ Board of Education choses the cover they liked best. Diane Edwards, the Senior Account Clerk in the Business Office, coordinates the contest every year. “This year there were more participants than other years. The quality of the work (L-R) Abigail Wolf (Roy-Hart), Diane Edwards and Gillian was exceptional. The kids are very talented Schyve (Roy-Hart). this year. The Board of Education had a tough choice, but ultimately decided on Abigail Wolf’s design.” Abigail is a senior from Royalton-Hartland. Her classmate Gillian Schyve, also from Royalton-Hartland, took second place.

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computer-science degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than non-STEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields. n

• THIRD WEEK OF MARCH • ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Your mind is receptive to innovative ideas, Aries. You may feel inspired to try out many new things in the days to come. Catalog those that make you happy.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, home is where the heart is, especially this week. Spend as much quality time as you can with loved ones in the days to come. Find a cozy spot to read and unwind as well.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Turn off the logical part of your mind for a little while, Taurus. Let your fantasies run wild. Trying to manage everything down to the minute can short-circuit your brain.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, might you be so fixated on a problem that you’re overlooking the simplest solutions? Take a step back and refocus. The answer might be simpler than you think.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, a truckload of new ideas is coming your way. These may serve as catalysts for new hobbies, projects and even developing new friendships along the way.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You are always ready to take on more, Sagittarius. This week you may have to set some limits or you may burn out. An adventure with a BFF is doable.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 You may not be entirely sure what’s holding you up this week, Cancer. But once you put your finger on it, you’ll be able to work through the issues that much more readily. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 You have carte blanche to hibernate for the week if you feel you need some alone time, Leo. But try to put your selfimposed exile to some good use around the house. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, why slip quietly into a party when you can make a grand entrance? Don’t be afraid of pointing the spotlight on yourself for a change. Then enjoy the rush that comes from it.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 It is possible to accomplish much in stressful situations, Capricorn. But sometimes you don’t realize when you need to take a step back. This is the time. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, a long-held belief might be holding you back or preventing you from moving forward. Once you let it go, you’ll feel emancipated and ready to take a step in the right direction. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, a bad mood need not dictate how you approach the day or even the week ahead. Call up a friend and beat the funk.
How to Spur Kids’ Interest in the Arts
Art can enrich the lives of people young and old, male and female. The arts can introduce adults and children to different cultures and traditions, while also helping them to develop more fully as human beings. While some may feel the benefits of the arts cannot be measured, the nonprofit organization Americans for the Arts notes that kids who are involved in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement than kids who are not involved in the arts. And though mathematics and science may not be the first thing people associate with the arts, kids involved in the arts are four times more likely to participate in math and science fairs than kids who are not involved in the arts. Parents can do a lot to make art a bigger part of their kids’ lives. The following are some simple ways parents can bring more art into their kids’ lives, courtesy of Americans for the Arts. · Join in the fun. Parents can make art more fun for kids by playing music around the house and singing and dancing alongside their youngsters. In addition, read a book to or with your children and join in when they pursue other artistic endeavors, such as drawing or painting. · Find local events. Many school districts have slashed their arts budgets in recent years, but parents can still find local arts events for kids in their communities. Peruse the local newspaper and other communitybased periodicals for cultural events for kids. Support local theater groups by attending performances with your children and explaining to them that the performers live in the community just like they do. · Pitch in with local arts organizations. Local arts organizations typically rely on donations and volunteers to support their programs. Parents who want to instill a love of the arts in their children can help local organizations’ fundraising efforts and even volunteer their time if the opportunity presents itself. · Encourage kids’ artistic pursuits. Some kids may decide to pursue artistic endeavors on their own, and parents can encourage such pursuits. Celebrate kids’ participation in arts-based activities in school and in the community, recognizing their hard work in the same way you would acknowledge their successes in the classroom and in sports. n

St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who spend the day outdoors celebrating their Irish heritage would do well to warm up with a hearty meal once the revelry ends. Irish stew is tailor-made for such feasts, as it aligns with the theme of the day and also serves as a warm and filling meal. Slow cookers make whipping up a batch of Irish stew somewhat effortless. Simply combine the ingredients in the morning, then return at night to a completely cooked meal you can enjoy with family and friends. Any favorite stew recipe can be adapted to the slow cooker. For inspiration, try this variation.
