Senior SkillsUSA officers Seth Warriner (Lyndonville), Ryan Burbee (Lockport), Morgan Hahn (RoyaltonHartland), Robert Humbert, Jonathan Scroth (Lyndonville), Shawnasea Swiatowy (Lockport).

Robert Humbert of Wolcottsville Wildlife recently received donations collected by the staff and students at the Orleans Career and Technical Education Center. Mr. Humbert had recently worked with the school’s envirothon team coached by science teacher Peter Jablonski. Mr. Jablonski learned that Wolcottsville Wildlife depends on donations to care for the sick and injured animals it takes in and he approached the SkillsUSA officers to ask if they would like to support a collection drive for the organization. Both senior and junior officers readily agreed, and senior officer Morgan Hahn created a flyer asking for donations of paper towels, gently used towels and blankets, cat and dog food, cleaning supplies, etc. The school was able to donate two boxes of items and a check for $200 to help Wolcottsville Wildlife in their mission to care for injured wildlife. Mr. Humbert was thrilled with the donations and said it will all be put to good use!

CLASSIFIED ADS that

full springs or mattresses .......... from

$99 lift chair recliners .............. from $699

USE A KEY WORD. This immediately tells the reader exactly what you have to sell.

2

Make your description CLEAR AND FACTUAL. State the year, make, model, color & size and tell what condition the item is in. Also, state the special features.

3

STATE THE PRICE. Successful classified advertisers have learned that the price in an ad helps increase the chances for results.

4

IF THERE IS A GENUINE SENSE OF URGENCY, say so. The words “We’re moving,” or “Must sell fast,” suggest that readers respond immediately.

5

INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER. Classifieds get results fast and often generate immediate sales. If you cannot be available to answer the phone at all times, be sure to specify special calling times such as “after 9pm” or “before 11am.”

A Long Tradition

RANDY BOWER ANNOUNCES MEMBERSHIP DRIVE The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute will begin its annual Honorary Membership drive in Orleans County within the next ten days according to Sheriff Randy Bower. The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute was established in 1979. It is a not-for-profit corporation, tax exempt organization, and contributions to the Institute are tax deductible. While the Sheriff’s Office is a unit of county government, many of the concerns of Sheriffs and other law enforcement agencies are best addressed on a statewide level. The Sheriffs’ Institute provides centralized training programs and services for all Sheriffs’ Offices, where those programs and services would be unavailable or impractical on a single county basis. The flagship program of the Sheriffs’ Institute is the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp for economically challenged children. The Sheriffs’ Camp, in its 42nd year of operation, is located on Keuka Lake and 840 children from across New York State attend each summer. The Sheriffs’ Institute pays the entire cost of the camp stay and transportation. Most children attending wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity for vacation travel or a summer camp experience. The Sheriffs’ Camp program combines summer recreation with activities designed to teach an understanding of, and respect for, our laws and the men and women who enforce them. The strong camper to counselor ratio allows for individual attention with an emphasis on the development of self esteem.“In these difficult economic times we cannot forget our youth who will not have the opportunity for a summer camp experience or a summer vacation,” Sheriff Randy Bower said. “By becoming an honorary member you are supporting the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp for economically disadvantaged children.” In addition, the Sheriffs’ Institute operates a scholarship program that provides one scholarship to each of New York State’s Community College’s Criminal Justice Programs. This program is designed to help attract the best and the brightest to the criminal justice vocation. For more information about the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp and other Sheriffs’ Institute Programs, visit our website, www.sheriffsinstitute. org or simply google “Sheriffs’ Institute kids” and it will be your first option. Financial support for many of the Sheriffs’ Institute programs comes from Honorary Membership dues. Invitations for Honorary Membership are extended on a non-partisan basis, and the invitees are selected at random. Any persons interested in supporting the efforts of the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute by becoming an Honorary Member should contact the Sheriff if they do not receive an invitation in the mail, or visit our web site at: www.sheriffsinstitute.org to download an application. ON THE ROAD TWO THOUSAND NiNeTeeN

Why Do Brake Rotors Warp? Braking systems are comprised of various components, including rotors. Rotors are large metal discs that can be seen behind the wheels of the car. Rotors can sometimes appear to warp, and many drivers may question why this occurs or if this is a significant problem. Rotors cannot really warp. Automotive experts note that rotors are metal discs that are cast under extreme heat conditions. It would take a similar application of heat by the braking system for rotors to actually bend, which is impossible. Other factors make rotors appear to be warped, so describing such rotors as “warped” is an easy way to explain the problem to vehicle owners. For brakes to work correctly, brake pads must be applied squarely and evenly against the rotor. But friction can cause some brake pad materials to form residue on certain areas of the rotor, eventually contributing to uneven rotor surface levels. Some spots become thicker, while others may thin out. Drivers’ own habits, including their braking tendencies, can contribute to uneven rotors. The automotive advice resource Your Mechanic says that riding the brakes for prolonged periods of time can cause hot brake pads to “paint” the rotors. So constant braking should be avoided. Drivers also can shift into a lower gear when driving downhill so that prolonged breaking is unnecessary. Also, avoiding frequent hard breaking may help. People who live in an area where they’re hard on the brakes either because of hilly terrain or traffic may find such environments can take a toll on the performance of their vehicles’ brake systems. Brake system issues, such as front brakes having to work harder than rear brakes, or over-torqueing when wheels are installed, also may cause rotors to warp, advise automotive experts at Kal Tires. Moss Motoring also states that new pads and brake pads need to be fitted correctly and properly “bedded.” Bedding is the initial transfer of friction material from pad to the disc to form a smooth, uniform layer. Break-in instructions should be included with new brake installation. Warped rotors can cause symptoms such as squeaky sounds and lead to jittery feelings in the car when brakes are applied. Such rotors also can cause the vehicle to vibrate when coming to a stop. If warped rotors seem to be an issue, mechanics may be able to put thicker rotors into a lathe to smooth out the residue and restore an even surface but the problem can come back. It is usually best to replace rotors if they are causing severe vibrations or issues when braking. n

Develop a Vehicle Maintenance Schedule The oft-sudden expense of vehicle repairs can throw monthly budgets into disarray. Maintaining a routine service schedule is one way for drivers to keep repair costs down. The online automotive resources Edmunds.com says many car owners do not adequately prepare for scheduled maintenance, and may not give maintenance a thought until it’s too late. The first step drivers take upon purchasing a new or preowned vehicle should be to familiarize themselves with the vehicle’s owner’s manual, which is filled with valuable information and likely includes maintenance interval recommendations. Next, drivers should learn about their vehicle, which is particularly relevant when buying a preowned vehicle. Getting to know how the car or truck rides, as well as any sounds it may make, can provide drivers with a solid foundation they can then use to keep their cars running strong. Routine service typically includes tire rotation, oil changes and topping off of fluids. So just how long between service appointments can a car go? Here are some generalized estimates. · Oil change: Oil chemistry and engine technology have improved so much that most cars can go well beyond the once-recommended 3,000 mile interval between oil changes. Now many vehicle manufacturers recommend between 5,000 and 10,000 miles between changes, advises Edmunds. Drivers should err on the side of caution if they do a lot of stop-and-go driving and short trips. Other drivers may want to invest in vehicles that have oil change maintenance minders built in. A light or countdown will come on the dashboard, indicating when the oil has reached the end of its usefulness. · Tire rotation: Rotating tires helps prolong the life of the tires and alleviates uneven tread and wear. During the rotation, each tire is removed and relocated to a different position to ensure that all the tires will wear evenly. Michelin Tires states that tires should be rotated around every six months, or between 6,000 and 8,000 miles. · Vehicle fluids: Your best bet is to see what the manufacturer recommends in regard to fluids such as transmission fluid, differential oil, brake fluids, coolant, etc. Some transmissions need regular maintenance, while others can go 150,000 miles between changes, according to the vehicle information site The Drive. Coolant typically can last 100,000 miles. For these types of changes, it may be best to go to a mechanic or service center familiar with your make and model rather than a quicklube center, as knowing when to drain and refill can be more complicated. Service schedules can be designed to adhere to manufacturers’ recommendations and drivers’ personal preferences. n

Slow down and give other motorists space Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1⁄12-inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains.

Maintain tires Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles. Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well.

Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most.

Skidding Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation.

See and be seen Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers.

Exercise caution with puddles and running water It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways.

Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal. Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries.

Did You Know? Improved performance and reliability has increased the life expectancy of many vehicles. As a result, many drivers are keeping their cars and trucks in excess of 10 years. According to an IHS Markit study, the average age of vehicles in the United States is a record 11.6 years, with the average length of ownership at 79.3 months, or nearly seven years. Even after an owner has relinquished his or her new vehicle, that used car or truck can go on to provide many more years of utility for its next owner. Certain models top the charts among the longest kept vehicles, according to iSeeCars, an automotive industry group. These include the Toyota 4Runner, Chevrolet Corvette, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Porsche Boxster, and the Toyota Land Cruiser, which is the longest kept vehicle and also is the automaker’s longest-running SUV. This vehicle is held onto for an average 10.6 years after being bought new. To hold on to their vehicles as long as possible, drivers should follow maintenance schedules, keep their cars and trucks clean and make repairs promptly. When it comes time to get a new vehicle, upkeep can go a long way toward improving resale value or getting back more on trade-ins. n

How to Avoid Flat Tires

Loan Sale!

AUTO Auto Loans asLOANS low as 3.99% as as 2.79% low$367/mo.

Nothing can delay road trips more suddenly than flat tires. Unfortunately, because tires are the only part of the vehicle constantly in contact with the road, wear and tear is to be expected. Routine inspection and tire maintenance is essential to their performance. In addition, paying attention to road hazards and avoiding them when possible can prolong the life of tires.

• Tire pressure: Tires should be maintained at the correct air pressure indicated on the sidewall or as PaymentDon’t is based on borrowing $20,000 for 60 months a credit score oftoo! 690 or higher. forget we have camper, boatwith and RV loans advised by the manufacturer. • Tire wear: The advisors at Select Auto Imports say that inspecting tires for uneven wear should be a routine part of maintenance. If tires show uneven wear, they may be more susceptible to flats or blowouts. Tire rotations can help alleviate uneven wear. The NHTSA recommends tires be rotated every 5,000 miles. • Tire treads: The Allstate Insurance company says to look for worn tire treads. Check for wear bar indicator marks located between the tread pattern of the tires. If the wear bar is level with the treads, it’s time for new tires. Otherwise, place a quarter between the grooves of the tire. If the tread doesn’t extend beyond the top of Washington’s head, it’s a good idea to replace the tires. n

Another Reason to Quit Smoking Smoking has been linked to many different illnesses. It’s widely known that cigarette smoke can impact respiratory and cardiovascular health, but there may be a new reason to quit, particularly for those plagued by chronic inflammation. Researchers at Sweden’s Umea University, in collaboration with researchers in the United States, found that nicotine strongly activates immune cells to release DNA fibers decorated with pro-inflammatory molecules called neutrophil extracellular traps, or NETs. Continuous exposure to NETs can harm tissues and may explain why smokers are vulnerable to inflammatory diseases. NETs have been implicated in several inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, cancer and small vessel vasculitis. This evidence presents yet another reason why people should quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke, or never begin smoking at all. n

• Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose low-intensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts. • Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel which may progress to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing, or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • Approximately 2-3 times your body weight of force is exerted on each foot with walking. Flexible, non-custom molded arch support found at those advertised shoe stores cannot support these forces and usually do not provide long-lasting relief, do not come with a lifetime warranty, and are typically more expensive than custommolded ones made by our office. • 95 percent of our patients symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best postop success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques and EPF resulting in minimal incisions and scarring, immediate ambulation and often back in a shoe in one week.

Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury.

• Stay hydrated. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of injury during exercise. n

Signs of a

HEART ATTACK Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before betting help. Symptoms include:

SIGNS OF A STROKE

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking a few simple questions:

1 2 3 4

Ask the person to SMILE. Ask the person to TALK AND SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE. i.e. It is sunny out today. Ask the person to RAISE BOTH ARMS. Ask the person to STICK OUT HIS TONGUE. If the tongue goes to one side or the other, that is a sign of a stroke.

OTHER STROKE WARNING SIGNS

• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause If you or someone with you has one or more of these signs, don’t delay!

Finished Basements Save Energy and Deliver More Living Space

OPEN HOUSE Sat., March 30, 1-3 p.m. 8992 Roberts Grove, Clarence

By finishing your basement, you can gain more living space while reducing the amount of energy loss from downstairs. Basements that are not fully finished typically do not have insulated walls or covered flooring. This can result in heat loss and cause your furnace to work overtime. Clarence- This absolutely immaculate 2018 custom green home w/ Smart Tech features sets the area standard for new builds. Geo Thermal heat/cool for low utility bills. Pulling up the concrete driveway you’ll find a dryvit exterior + stone w/brick accents giving this home a French country flair. Upon entry of the arched 8-foot solid wood double doors you’re greeted by maple hardwood floors throughout, a first-floor office w/French doors, and a formal dining w/decorative tray ceiling & chair rails. Warm common living space accented by a two-sided stone wrapped fireplace dividing the great/living room & stunning kitchen boasting an oversized island, Jenn-Air appliances, quartz countertops, double built-in pantries and a breakfast room w/ no shortage of natural light. Home at the end of the Cul De Sac. $699,500 (B1166620) • ZAMBITO REALTORS • (585) 798-9898

A remodeled basement offers more than additional storage space. It can provide a lot of extra room for a growing family, such as space for a gym, home theatre, office, guest suite, or a playroom for the kids. To ensure a comfortable and inviting basement, there are a few project components to consider: • Insulation will make sure your space warm and comfortable. For the best results, install a stone wool insulation product, a measure that can be done easily with the ROXUL ComfortBoard IS. This product is mechanically fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, offering you a higher R-value and better acoustics. • Drywall will help define the space and make it feel like a part of your home. If you haven’t tackled drywall before, consider hiring a pro to ensure your walls are seamless. • Flooring should be water sealed and covered with an insulated material. There are many products on the market, but consider laying padding before carpet or in-floor heating before tiles. • Personalize it with finishing touches. Select furniture that can fit down a typically steep staircase and choose items that complement the rest of your home’s décor. n

Did you know? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral). n

SPRING HAS SPRUNG By Douglas H. Domedion

I don’t know about you but I was getting tired of our dreary winter. I had gotten so use to photographing on overcast days that when we did get some sun I was not sure how to adjust my camera! Then on the March 13, there was a great influx of migrating geese, a sure sign of better The tundra swans are here, they things to come. don’t stay long! I was out and about with my camera that morning and the sky seemed full of high flying geese coming into the swamp. String after string came across the sky and it brought about a new excitement to me. There was a flock of about 100 tundra swans flying over Oak Orchard Ridge Road and later in the morning a lone snow goose was spotted out in a field with hundreds of Canada geese. A cruise around the swamp found hundreds of geese standing around on ice or on the various dikes with constant flocks pulling in. The next morning as my bird feeder was being filled I was treated with the sight and calls of geese as they headed out of the swamp towards harvested fields in search of food. It felt good to heard their calling again. Later I took a cruise and hadn’t gone far when I ran into six of the huge tundra swans not too far off the road. A slow approach with my vehicle while watching for any signs of nervousness on the swans finally got me into a pretty good position to get some photos. By remaining in my vehicle the swans remained calm and presented some nice poses. Later that day the same swans where still in the area, except three of them, had moved to the other side of the road to search for spilled grain in the harvested corn field. Of course they were accompanied by a few hundred geese and some ducks. The swans standing next to the mallard ducks looked huge or should I say they made the ducks looks small! In the swamp a sampling of ducks were observed like pintails, hooded mergansers, mallards, coot and a group of bluebills (they may have been ringbills as they were far way in a small open water area along one dike). Turkey vultures were also observed cruising the skies looking for winter carrion below. It is difficult for the waterfowl to find food at this time of the year as everything is about frozen up yet and the crop fields have been pretty much picked over by the fall migration, resident geese, deer, and turkeys. Thus, the flocks don’t remain in one field long as they “field hop” to find food. As the season progresses the birds will move out farther and farther from the swamp in their search for food to prep their bodies for the continuation of their migration north to their nesting grounds in Canada. However, many will remain to nest and spend their summer with us, resident geese as we call them. Not to long ago Canada geese were not that plentiful in the swamp during the summer, but good conservation management has change all that. In fact in may places our resident geese have become a real nuisance. They have invaded our city parks and suburban areas laying down a lot of their excrement along with often being aggressive towards people who evade “their territory!”! For years there has been an early “resident goose” hunting season in September, before the fall migration geese arrive, to help control this growth of local birds, but it seems the geese are too smart for us as many headed to areas where no hunting is allowed. Of course with the arrival of the spring migration along comes the migration of humans to witness it. Many of these folks are not too “nature wise” and thus don’t really know how to “act” on their nature adventures. The various overlooks on the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and the NYS Tonawanda and Oak Orchard Management Areas are the best places to witness this spring marvel. At the two State WMA’s there are some great kiosks to provide information on the areas and where and what can be seen. One of the best things to do while on your nature adventure is remain in your vehicle or stick to designated trails and not go wandering around. This is a rough time for waterfowl and flushing them causes them to burn up energy they need for their migration. Not only does disturbing wildlife cause them to burn up valuable energy but it often ruins the chance for other to see them. In the weeks to come nature will be putting on a great show for us, don’t miss it and act responsibility. My contact information is 585-798-4022 or woodduck2020@ yahoo.com.

BUFFALO DINNER

Seafood can be a healthy addition to anyone’s diet, and there are plenty of ways to cook fish. Seafood is often made even more delicious with the right accoutrements — such as a tasty dipping sauce. Tartar sauce long has been the peanut butter to seafood’s jelly. Seafood and tartar sauce is a common pairing, particularly for baked or fried dishes. Tartar sauce features a base of either mayonnaise or aioli. The vinegary, creamy base is enhanced with pickled treats, such as capers, gherkins, pickles, or relish. Tartar sauce has appeared in cookbooks since the 19th century. It is believed to be derived from the French sauce tartare, which was named after the Tartare ethnic group who once occupied parts of Ukraine and Russia. In Turkey, a condiment known as tarator has traditionally been used as a condiment for fried seafood.

There are many different variations on the tartar sauce recipe. This recipe, courtesy of the Food Network, is one that seafood lovers can try. Home chefs can substitute capers or add fresh herbs like dill to expand the flavor profile.

Check out what people are saying about Bidleman Chevrolet in the Google Reviews... Maggie D. Bidleman bought our local Chevy/GMC dealership. They have a Ford dealership nearby. I really liked the employees at the former owners. They were like friends. I must admit I was disappointed that some of them were no longer there. I needed to get maintenance done on my car. I was pleasantly surprised with the service department, friendly, knowledgeable. I think they are very up-to-date computer wise. Sending notice of what was done via email. Charges were very reasonable, will definitely use them for service on my vehicle. Scott F. Recently purchased a 2011 Kia Soul for my daughter to bounce around in for the next year or so. Not only is the car better than expected, I got a great deal. The Salesman Jason was extremely professional and excellent to work with. Although a bit out of my way, I will remember the great service I received and will absolutely recommend this dealership to my friends. Leah M. First, I would like to say that I am very thankful for my Tahoe LT from Bidleman Chevrolet Buick GMC. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the staff was extremely friendly. I worked with Brian and he treated me like family. As I sat in the waiting room multiple employees extended their generosity, they checked on me frequently to assure that I was comfortable. I was offered coffee, hot tea, water and the list goes on. Brian and Travis from finance made sure I got the the best deal possible and within a couple hours I drove off the lot a happy girl!
